>> live from the channel 4 studios in boston, wbz news at 11 starts right now. >> breaking right now at 11, a driver rescued hours after getting trapped inside a cement truck that was surrounded by live wires. >> we are live and the driver was freed about an hour ago. >> reporter: hi, lisa and dave. it's safe to say there's plenty of work to be done here. this entire neighborhood is still without power. as you can see, below powerlines and one of the utility polls suspended in the air there. they have to replace the pole completely. the cement truck driver thankfully okay and uninjured. it is safe to say this could

if you take a look at this video around 6:00 the cement truck was driving down the street and struck low wires when the wires came down as well as that utility pole. those were live wires that landed on the truck trapping the driver in the cab for several hours. crews had to come to the scene and shut down power and work to free the driver. we can say thankfully the driver was freed about a half an hour ago. the work still continues and employees tell me it'll be continuing for some time. they estimate power will not be back on in the neighborhood until tomorrow morning. thankfully we can say everybody is okay here. . >> >> thank you. this developing story. a little girl left alone on a school van. it happened this afternoon on hollingsworth street.

5-year-old crying on the bus and called 911. police found the girl in the back of the van. she was alone for five long hours. she is safe with her family tonight. the child actually -- days to go until the iowa caucuses and hillary clinton's e-mails are back in the spotlight. >> her e-mails contained top secret information. >> ken mccloud is live with what this means for hillary clinton and her campaign. >> reporter: she did not mention the e-mail tonight during her campaign rally in davenport, iowa. this weekend she'll likely be called onto throw more water on a fire she thought was already out:. with hillary clinton clinging to a slight lead comes confirmation that 22 different e-mails on her

there's a breeze blowing out there and it's gusting a little bit. some 20s are showing up and they'll go down to the mid and upper 20s to 30 to 32 for a low tonight. it'll be chilly and looks like the cloudiness we still have left in place in spots will start to disappear and start tomorrow morning with sunshine. the clouds take over. we'll go to 41. that's above average for january 30th. on sunday up to 52 degrees and milder after that. the rest of my accuweather forecast in just a few minutes. >> thank you. new at 11, a dangerous stretch of roadway in central massachusetts is safer tonight. there have been bad and deadly crashes on route 20 in oxford. as julie explains one victim's family says the state still needs to be more. >> reporter: it took three months to widen and install guardrail along a sharp, steep infamous curve in oxford. lisa has waited much longer. >> this should have happened 18 years ago.

i didn't ask to become a single parent. i didn't ask to watch my son suffer in this pain. >> reporter: a drunk driver hit her family in 1997. her husband mike died instantly and her son kyle was left paralyzed. >> it's been a hard life. 25 surgeries. his life is in hospitals. >> reporter: the mother of three campaigned for years to improve this stretch. change came swiftly after a mother and baby collided with a cement truck last october. >> they had no choice but to really do something. >> reporter: in the interim, they spent $2.3 million to improve 3600 feet of the highway. >> they still have a long way to go but i'm thrilled at what they've done. >> reporter: lisa says she won't stop fighting until the project is complete. when the road is straightened then the concrete barriers are finally installed. >> no one should have to suffer the way our family has suffered.

route 20 safer is in the works. they hope the project can start in the next three to five years. tonight, three police officers are on paid leave after a deadly shooting in lynn. police say they were serving a search warrant on randolph mcclain and he took off and tried to car jack a woman and they fired killing him. a driver learns the hard way not to run away from state troopers. douglas grey is accused of assaulting an officer during a traffic stop. they had to taser him to get him into custody after they found 25 grams of heroin on him. his face is banged up and he's nursing the wounds behind bars. the fed is sweeping the streets of boston putting dangerous gang members off the

>> reporter: david, detectives moved in on this extremely dangerous gang ms 13 today and the members were indicted this afternoon. they hope these stop the recruitments of middle school and high school students. east boston high school according to federal investigators a recruiting ground for one of the most violent street gangs. students know the name. >> they write in the bathroom ms. >> reporter: may recruit teams from high schools. east boston, chelsea and everett. were you surprised they were going into the high school and middle schools to recruit? >> i don't know the details of the case. i'm assuming that in america we have some gang problems going on. >> reporter: today the feds indicted 56 alleged members. >> they are not just out to hurt or punch, they're out to kill. >> reporter: investigators say

of three teens in east boston. wilson martinez and irvin castro back in september. christopher cruz died of his injuries two weeks ago. . >> the initiation process is structured and violent. >> reporter: detectives showed off their weapons. they get their money through drugs. immigrants mostly make up ms-13. the gang targets their own. boston's mayor wants the arrest to stop recruitments of students. >> the message is to kids we're doing it to keep you safe. we want to make sure people can go to school without interferences. >> reporter: and all the alleged gang members are over the age of 18.

tsarnaev is formally appealing his conviction today. he has been sentenced to death for the 2013 attacks. investigators are working to try and figure out what killed a couple overnight. firefighters couldn't get in the house. online fantasy sports site dealt another blow. the company that handles the payment for draft kings is pulling out according to the new york times. the payment process is worried about the legality of it. it'll stop processing payments in february. one of the dangerous fugitives who escaped a prison in california is behind bars. he surrendered to police in santa anna. he was one of three prisoners who escaped. detectives are questioning a teacher who worked at the jail because they believe she played a role in helping the men escape. she's a young woman in the

and the perpetrator infected her. >> aside from the physical, emotionally this has been horrible. it's a stigma. >> reporter: the one treatment costs $83,000. >> it's a thousand dollars a pill. >> reporter: she has insurance. why can't she get the drug? she isn't stick enough yet. >> you know the insurance companies want me to be in stage 3 liver scarring. >> reporter: they can't talk about the details of nicole's case. making matters worse the man nicole victimized her got the drug in prison paid for by the state. >> i don't feel like it's fair. >> reporter: the company that makes the drug has come under fire for the attorney general for price gouging. pricing the treatment in a manner that effectively allows it to continue spreading results in massive public harm. the drug company keeps the costs

don't want to pay and nicole gets caught in the middle. >> the pharmaceutical companies need to be more reasonable. it's almost giving the insurance companies an excuse not to give this medication to the people that need it. >> reporter: the fda approved a hepatitis drug that will compete. that competition could bring down the cost once it hit it is market. in other parts of the world this same world is just $10 a pill. >> thank you. we're seeing the courageous efforts of an officer trying to rescue three boys from this icy pond. as he tries to rush to the rescue wasting no time and grabs a large tree branch on shore and gets down to the water. you'll see the officer feeds the branch to one of the teens and then quickly pulls him to shore. he says he then tried to find the others in the frigid waters.

with my tree branch and began hitting the edge of where the water was to the ice hoping that i would see some sort of sign of life. >> so he rescued one teenager but sadly the two other teens did not make it out alive. take a look at this. wild weather is wiping out roads in the pacific northwest tonight. this is drone video of two sinkholes in southern oregon. the sinkholes swallowed up part of a road and a parking lot. torrential rain is to blame. >> so many people said we don't want a winter like last year and we haven't had one. >> this is like the flip side of last winter, barry. it's not over yet. it's only the end of january. we can have a lot of things march. we'll be watching that closely.

on the wbz weather bug. in brokton 43 and in boston 41. it was warmer to the south and a little chillier to the north and west. look how warm it is as we expand the view to the rest of the nation. 52 in nashville, 53 in st. louis and our air is coming from this direction, not from canada. a brief cool shot for tonight and tomorrow morning and then it starts to warm up the rest of the weekend and we're off to the races here for next week as the warm air starts to take over. this cold shot for tonight. we had the front come through with a few snow showers and rain showers. the major storm is in canada. boston hit 41 today and we'll do the same thing tomorrow afternoon as well. the sky clears out and later on tonight in the early morning hours lots of sunshine. first thing tomorrow morning. quite a few clouds take over

should be repeated throughout the day. sunday will be milder as the southwest wind takes over. this shouldn't be precipitation except a few snow showers. on sunday lower 50s. that's above the average. if you're going skiing or snow boarding they have terrain open and they need a big block buster storm for the ski resorts. never theless you find good conditions and enjoy it. 33 in the ski resorts and 42 on sunday. the big story next week will be a big storm developing in the rockies moving through the plain states and across the great lakes. that's an inside winter for us and brings warm rain into our region on wednesday. look at these temperatures as we go through the next four days sarting on january 31st.
