campaign 2016. as we speak, people are getting off work rushing to the polls to make sure their vote is counted. >> the first polls will be closing tonight at 7:00. earliest voters made their choice official after midnight in three tiny hamlets. most of the candidates spent the day as visibly as they could. most polls close at 7:00 tonight with about 20 precincts >>. people all over the country pay attention to what happens in new hampshire and for good reason.

>> are you ready? >> in the last seven years, lisa, nearly 200 thousand new voters have moved to new hampshire, one thing to watch for is have they changed the nature of this primary from a hands on betting process to something else. if donald trump's large polling lead holds up, it's a sign that the old new hampshire model of face to face voter engagement may be outdated. but if an establishment like jeb bush does well, that might speak to the residual strength of the traditional new hampshire strategy. another thing to watch for, does gender really matter. in a state with an abundance of female elected officials, it's a sign the gender card is much weaker than expected. bad news for clinton moving forward.

secretary of state in the united states. holing the job for 40-years. going back to paula evans who is live in manchester, cbs 11 headquarters. paula, this man has seen some history? >> reporter: he is. he says this year is extra special because new hampshire is celebrating the 100th anniversary of this primary. his office is a treasure drove of member ya' bill ya' and artifacts, including the desk of the original ledges lay tor that sponsored the bill that created the new hampshire primary. a farmer asked him. why do the big shots debt to make all of the decisions about becoming a delegate at the convention? >> the primary was created for the little guy and it has continued to give the little guy a chan. you don't have to have the most

and win this primary. >> reporter: so, every four years, anyone can get their name on the ballot here in new hampshire if they gather 100 $1,000. to people like bill gardener, it's very important that is the maintained. anyone, someone who doesn't have money can get their name on the ballot. process. when we hear so much about the little guy in this season. that's why it's so crucial. he will make sure new hampshire remains first in the nation. >> what was the number you gave us earlier. most people thought it was 15 but it was more than that >> reporter: 58 this year. back in 1992, there was a number in the 60s. this is not the biggest field of candidates, but all of the people that went to the polls, especially the undecided voters had a lot to choose from. it will be very interesting to see the results.

save the younger boy. cj was submerged until fire rescues pulled him out. he died yesterday. his parents released a statement, saying in part -- tonight as sam kouvaris said they will conduct their own investigation into the sinking of the el farrow. it sunk off the bahamas after it got caught in hurricane joaquin. tonight, alarming news about the number of child abuse cases in massachusetts. the globe reports we have the highest rate of abused and neglected children in the country as of 2014, there were nearly 23 victims.

primary coverage continues tonight, fun moment on the campaign trail. when we say the candidates are criss-crossing the state, we are not kidding. someone showed this showing marco rubio campaign bus passing the bus belonging to jeb bush's team. certainly, a party in new hampshire, but the party of the year is in new orleans, this is fat tuesday, the final day of mardi gras and tonight, omar takes us to the french quarter. >> reporter: thousands of revelers line the streets of new orleans french quarter to sip booze, catch beads and watch parades. for many big easy residents. fat tuesday is not a spectator sport.

>> reporter: one of the clubs letting the good times roll on the final day of mardi gras. cbs news, new orleans. >> back here in new england, it's awe good thing we got the snow yesterday before the new hampshire primary >> and lent starts tomorrow. i have decided to give up shoveling for lent. a little bit of shoveling in the forecast before things wrap up. our snow has been back loaded this winter, part of the "wbz" winter outlook. if you watch back, snow kicking in february, over a foot in the city of boston after just shy of 10 inches in january. pretty much nothing back in december. temperature wise through the 20s. we'll see the we are looking at clouds that will increase across the area, watching the snow towards the mid-atlantic. one of several disturbances

you see one that missed up us, one, another piece back into the great lakes and that will bring us a few more snowshowers on thursday a wintery week for us, overnight. a chance for a couple of flurries and snowshowers and then we are focusing on tomorrow. there will be some instability makingist way back into the new england. scattered areas, snow squalls, not going to be widespread and not all of the time. the main concern is when you get a quick burst of snow, it can cause hazardous driving conditions that's the focus on for our wednesday. >> more scattered snowshowers and then the big front arrives as we head towards the weekend. that will bring in the real saturday and sunday. in terms of snowshowers, we are talking a coating to a quick two inches. we can get a lot of snow in a

when a baby could not wait for a fiery crash to clear. wbz news at 6:00 starts now. suddenly it comes down to this, candidates from both parties watching and waiting in the closely contested new hampshire primary. paula, i can imagine you can feel the energy and the excitement in the air tonight. >> reporter: you certainly can, david. everywhere you go it's all anybody was talking about, whether they had decided at the last minute or stopped themselves from voting, because their decision making process was still going on. but no question about it, this is the day. the candidates and campaigns get quiet and the voters get to have their say. the polling places here in new hampshire did a brisk business as new hampshire voters turned out in force.
