searching for a hit-and-run driver tonight. the victim seen here seriously injured. moments before surveillance cameras captured the accident. driver assault an officer. and just one day after the new hampshire primary there are two fewer candidates for president tonight. republicans chris christie and carly fiorina dropping out of the race. >> breaking news now at 5:30, tasting freedom for the first time in 30 years, this massachusetts man becomes the first person in the united states to get a new trial because of very specific bad evidence. george perrot was a teen when police arrested him on rape charges. >> he has always said that he is innocent and today a judge granted him bail. beth germano is live with the story. >> reporter: it was a very powerful day as the judge released george perrot on personal recognizance it came down to a single strand of hair

but turn out to be bogus forensic analysis and after all these years he's rue eye nighted with his -- reunited with his family. overwhelming emotions in court. as 48-year-old george perrot learned he was free after 3 decades in prison for a crime he says he didn't commit. and today, a judge agreed the evidence was not there. mr. perot what is it like to walk out a free man. >> freedom. it's free. >> >> reporter: way -- he was convicted twice of raping an elderly woman when he was 17 in 1958 but a new trial was -- 1985 but a new trial was granted based on faulty analysis. >> i want to thank judge kane and my legal team and my supporters. >> reporter: in court the prosecution called him a flight risk with a lengthy disciplinary record in prison.

is it difficult you ready for this? >> absolutely. i got a good support team i am grounded and i am good. >> reporter: part of the support team with him today, as he walked away from court helping his mother who' mites she never thought -- who' midst she never thought the -- who admits she never thought the day would come. >> i knew he did some wrongful things but never did that never raped anybody and now he's man i am sure he is going to stick to doing things the right way. >> reporter: now it's up to the district attorney to decide if perrot will be retried but he has a powerful ally in the court. >> i am innocent and so it makes me feel great he acknowledged it. >> reporter: now perrot did admit to unarmed robbery the day he was accused of rape. and the judge today said he owes the victim in this case a debt of gratitude because she never picked him out in a lineup saying he was clean shaven and he had facial hair at time. he reports to probation 2 times awie and is ordered to stay

reporting live, beth germano wbz news. david and lisa. >> quite the story. thank you. snowflakes falling today but that's not the story. real story is the cold that's coming. >> this was just sort of the you know the entry level feature. the weekend we will see the coldest air of the year. let's go back to eric at fenway park. >> hey just want to get to headlines because what we are watching as we head towards the weekend is not the garden variety middle of winter. when you have wind chills well below zero and record breaking cold doesn't happen very often. it should be colder than what we saw last winter which tells you all you need to know. here's the run down here as we head through the next few days watching a couple more chances for snow and the cold that will work its way on in. we have snow showers out there tonight and more during the day tomorrow especially during the morning and again burst of snowfall on saturday morning. but no big organized storm systems and we are looking at the coldest air since lat year moving its way in.

counter and i tackled him and got him pretty good a couple times. >> wow. i will say. this was the first of two robberies in manchester last night. the second just minutes later was at another market about a mile away. and the suspect descriptions are similar right now. detectives are trying to figure out if the two crimes are related. david. it's a guilty plea from a former middle school lunch lady who is charged with raping a 15- year-old boy. prosecutors say that janelle foally assaulted him -- foley assault him at the family's home. today the weymouth woman pleaded dpimenty to five counts of -- guilty to five counts of rape and she was sentenced to 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 years in prison. warning for bu students if you have a jacket like this thieves may be targeting you. school police say they received more than a dozen reports now of clothing thefts since september and most involve the canada goose jacket. why would they target that jacket?

most of the thefts happened at the gym. lisa. the defective takata air bags are prompting new recalls dimeler and mercedes benz are recalling 840,000 vehicles from 2005 through 2014. the air bags can explode without warning and sending out pieces of metal and 10 people have been killedch the problem forced the largest recall in u.s. history. now totaling 24 million vehicles. a new jersey couple is suing canton based dunkin donuts. arguing that some locations charge sales tax when they weren't supposed to. the couple claims they were taxed on bottled water and packaged coffee and when franchise owners were told about the mystic they -- mistake they didn't fix it. dunkin donuts is reaching out to figure out what tapped. the opioid crisis is in the news every day. numbers have been chilling and it's estimated that 4 people per day die in massachusetts from aoverdose. i-team spent the past few

epidemic to find out what's happening and what's being done about it. ryan kath is here with more. >> reporter: this is in the news every day and it's one thing to hear about it and another thing to see it and that's why the i-team wanted a sense of what it's like on the front lines of the crisis and how first responders are dealing with it. plim out is one of the harder hit areas of the state and we spent several nights embedded with er doctors and police. you are on the front line how bad is it. >> unbelievably bad i never seen anything like this. i been involved in emergency medicine for 34 years now and this has never been as complicated as it is now or taxing on the system or as dangerous to our population. >> reporter: coming up tonight at 11 get an up close look at how the trauma unit respondswhen an overdose patient arrives. so we saw amazing things in the er. >> the hospitals the police departments are getting flooded with phone calls. how are they handling it.

on the bg feed a new york couple says a fit bit left them in on a nice secret. >> they were going to be parents. but the guy says he and his wife thought the -- bought them around christmas time and it detected her resting heart rate and saw it was higher than normal. and thinking it was broken david posted something on redit and someone asked was his wife pregnant and low and behold the answer was yes. what a way to find out. >> the fit bit people should be all over this. >> run with that. >> they should say occasionally it can tell you when you're he pregnant. people try all kind of tricks to take cool pictures or video with the smart phone. >> and one skier may have topped them all. he captured incredible video showing his skills on the slopes using just his iphone and this is the signature slow- motion swirl shot.

just in time for valentine's day we have a special love story tonight that is 7 decade in the making. a 9 #-year-old world -- 39-year- old world war -- 93-year-old world war ii veteran from virginia reunited with his girlfriend in australia they dated but lost touch. >> after decades apart internet helped to bring them back together. >> reporter: it's love -- if love is patient. >> you're vertical. >> reporter: norwood thomas and joyce morris could be the definition of true love. >> so very long. >> reporter: this week the two embraced each other for the first time in more than 70 years. they first met in london shortly before d-day and when the war end norwood returned to

but the flame never died. >> oh we were full of fun. he is tricky fella. >> reporter: somewhere between mailed love letters and botched proposal they lost touch and technology rekindled the fire. they reconnected over skype late last year after one of joyce's sons found norwood in an online article about d-day when word about the virtual reunion went public hundreds donated money to make sure they could reunite in person. >> i was going -- it's about the the most wonderful thing that could happen to me. >> good. >> reporter: if the gigsels inaustralia are an endcation they will attend a special valentine's day together. >> to find someone you love be special.

plenty of snow coating the 140 foot ramp which is almost four times tall thearnt green monster. eye towers in the middle of the fenway park. -- taller than the green monster. it towers in the middle of the fenway park. see people coming down the ramp. sick, awesome. and wipe out at the end. interesting finish on the end. so watching the athletes come up and down on the grand prix tour big event for the next two nights and cold temperatures for inone coming out to watch or taking part. let's look at headlines and some of the snow that's coming down tonight. for the people getting in early practice runs today, certainly felt a lot like winter. snowflakes for much of the afternoon and still snow showersmoving away eastward burst of moderate snowfall lawyers and andover heading to the 95 corridor and if you are traveling briefly low visible. snow showers will come to an end over the next couple hours for teens for most and low 20s in the city of boston with a westerly breeze tonight. so that's the forecast in the short-term. tomorrow morning, another cold

so it will be cowedy and breezy -- cloudy and breezy to start. and heading into the morning and late morning snow squalls develop. and locally heavy squalls are possible. and gusty winds kick in andth in midday and afternoon. -- in the midday and afternoon a blustery wintry day is expected for thursday as the front ushers in the first round of the bigger cold. friday a calm are day but very chilly. and then -- calmer day for but chilly. at the same time we have a storm developing to the east. it's well-off towards the east. but the combination of the two should produce a burst of snowfall on saturday morning to kick off the weekend. then behind that, we have the cold and ocean effect snow likely towards the cape and islands this weekend. so all told the wentriest stretch of weather so far this season. we are forecasting 11 below zero at worcester on sunday morning. that ties the record in boston forecasting 4 below. if that happens, it is the coldest temperature in 11 or excuse me 12 years in the city

record low. it's colder than anything winter. tough thing to do in the last zero. matter of fact. and we have done it nine times in the last 21 years. the cold we can take but the wind is the problem. and the winds gusting on saturday evening through sunday and they are going to produce bitter and dangerous wind chills. 20 to 30 below in the higher elevations and 35 below zero so certainly not spending a lot of time outdoors over the saturday and sunday and lots of layers heading out and about. the next week the cold starts to die down on monday and if you are doing marathon training friday and monday those are the days for a long run. less winds and the next stormsystem approaches on tuesday. we have a school yard shut out tonight. it's green elementary school in lowell. 90 third graders and barry burbank visited the classroom and they've cool song. as part of the community
