11:15 pm
and 6:00 to 10:30 the next two nights if you're planning to head out. and nantucket, southeastern mav hah has been the snow capital so far tnd the snow showers moving across the island. temperaturewise, not too bad. in the 20s to low 30s. we start that process tomorrow. this cold front that is in western new york, this is going to move through with snow squalls and a more cold air mass tomorrow afternoon compared to what we had today. your hour by hour as we head towards tomorrow morning. we'll start the day dry and chilly. i think our first snow showers start to develop mid morning from west to east. as we head through the day, the snow squalls are going to be an issue for travel. i think there will be some spots, poor visibility where all of a sudden the snow comes down heavily at the top of the newscast. we mentioned how this is the winter version of thunderstorms. it comes down very heavily in a short amount of time.
11:16 pm
early evening before dissipating. we'll also have more wind tomorrow. some of the squalls could get gnarly if you're going to be traveling around. be cautious. so the snow squalls developing by mid morning. the difference tomorrow compared to today, i think will will be a few more and we'll have more wind along with colder temperatures. we stay in the 20s region wide. all of that activity winds down as we head towards the evening so that is tomorrow, friday, the next cold front approaches. we start the day dry. by friday evening, a chance for snow showers to break out. another burst of snow is possible on saturday morning as an ocean storm moves to our east. we have this artic front moving through. and then behind that in comes all of the cold. as that cold pours over the ocean, we could set up the weekend of some ocean-effect snow showers on cape cod and the islands for late saturday and through the day on sunday so several chances of snow flakes in our forecast. the big deal this weekend is probably all about the cold a high near 20 on saturday at midday, but we'll be falling through the single digits
11:17 pm
the wind also increasing and then single digits to around 10 on sunday for high temperatures so our coldest valentine's day temperatures on record, 11 below in worcester and that is our forecast. in boston, forecasting four below. that would be a new record. and our coldest temperature in the city since 2004. this is some pretty legitimate cold that is moving in. the cold is one thing, but the wind is another. saturday night into sunday morning, our wind chill values at 20 to 35 below zero. so that is the type of cold where you make your plans inside. if you're heading out to a restaurant, you park your car, run inside and hang out and making sure the pets are not outside for very long at all. next week, a sub zero monday morning, but then we rebound and a chance for 40 degrees by tuesday, which at that point feels pretty good. >> i think it will, eric. thank you. now an eye team investigation going inside the epidemic. this is a devastating problem that is touching every corner of our state. >> for the past few months, the eye team has been on the frontlines to show you whoa it is really like and what is
11:18 pm
we have that story from plymouth, one of the hardest hit areas of massachusetts. >> what is going on there? >> i think he overdosed? >> very, very lightly. >> and we go to overdoses every day. >> reporter: this is the opennoid crises in real life a man in his 20s barely breathing, revived and rushed to the e.r. in plymouth after shooting heroin. these days it is something that this doctor sees all the time. >> it depends on how close this was, if the ambulance hadn't got therein. >> he probably would have died. >> reporter: the plymouth area has been hit hard. in 2014, 42 people died from overdoses in the town surrounding this hospital. >> i have been involved in emergency medicine for almost 34 years now and this has never been as complicated as it is now or taxing on the system or as dangerous to our population.
11:19 pm
>> reporter: the doctor allowed the eye team to follow him on several night shifts. >> it is not unusual for us to have to revive someone from an overdose northwesterly the evening and have them return later on in the evening. epidemic. >> reporter: that is why the police chief is changing how the abuse. >> we can't arrest our way out of the problem. >> reporter: there is the new street crimes unit armed with binoculars and the drug. the officers ross and johnson patrol streets and alleyways it starts. >> high school kids, older girls, guys. doesn't really discriminate. >> reporter: on this night, think assist a confused man on methadone and respond to a call for a rehab patient who ran into the woods. the chief is taking it up a notch coordinating with health care workers to make house calls after an overdose. >> we need to be at their door
11:20 pm
in the last six weeks, i think we placed people in beds somewhere six to eight times, so we're happy with that and we feel like that is successful. >> reporter: back at the hospital, they're also making changes. social workers and mental health professionals are embedded in the e.r. to be part of the treatment early. this is becoming a model for hospitals statewide and they were recently awarded a $3.7 million grant to fund their work. and intervention and treatment can work. the former marine became addicted to heroin after a drinking problem got out of hand. she is encouraged by the changes she sees in her hometown. >> you can't just let a whole generation die. the generations coming up, it is starting younger and younger and it is more and more powerful, the drug. >> reporter: do you really feel like you can change this problem? >> i think we have to take our successes in small bites. the phone calls that i get from a parent who says the best thing you could have done is arrested my son or daughter
11:21 pm
if i can have two or three of those this month, we've done really well. >> reporter: but the chief knows he has his work cut out for him. the number of overdose deaths jumped to 23 last year, up from 15 the year before, and that's after his officers started carrying the nare kahn. for the eye team, wbz news. we're going to have another installment of that series tomorrow night here at 11:00. >> such an important subject. taking the truth into overtime. >> next 2 in sports, paul pierce returns to the garden.
