of meteorologists. we'll check in with pamela in just a second. first, the coldest air is descending on us right now. painfully cold wind from the arctic will pick up throughout the afternoon and evening. expect a wind chill factor below zero. trains have been running at odd hours and idoling over night to keep the engine functioning. the coast guard said prepare for heavy freezing spray that can cause damage, especially to fishing boats that don't pull in for the winter. the cold is the first big of the weekend. pamela is in this morning. definitely want to bundle up. >> that's for sure. dangerously cold. we have hill -- wind chill warnings in place 4:00 p.m.

the app is free in google play and the apple app store. work crews are finishing inspections of manhole covers on 90.these inspections are the result of a tragic accident where a manhole cover came loose during in o'neill tunnel killing a woman. katy brace has the coverage. >> inspectors spanned out aacross the state highways in boston making sure all manholes were secure. >> they look scary in the middle of the road. just beyond that the ambulance was just coming there. >> terry was driving on 93 south during the morning commute and came up shortly after the accident. >> it didn't take long to put two and two together that it was the manhole cover. >> a manhole cover weighing 200 pounds became loose and airborne and crashed through the front

the car came to a stop along the barrier wall. driver caitlin clavette was killed. >> what a tragedy for that woman and her family and what a random tragedy. >> the state transportation checked over 500 manholes. it came from this hole near the tunnel exit. >> my understanding is this is an incredibly infrequent event. >> our i team has learned in 2007 five accidents involving manhole covers occurred in loss than a week. this accident on 128 was one of them. since then the state said they inspect manhole covers every 2 years. the one that came loose friday morning was last inspected in june of 2014. >> a freak accident like that is a terribly tragedy. >> the results of the inspections are resulted later today. depending on what crews found they could go to other highways outside the city of

i mean, there's no words to describe how nice and kind she was. >> it's an awful shame and it's going to take me a while to comprehend it. life is unfair. this is just one of the worse things that can happen to such an amazing person. >> she was on her way to work friday when a manhole cover hit her car on 93 south. she died instantly. >> i saw the picture of the accident first and thought god, that's horrible luck. then i found out it was her. some things just don't make sense. we'll really miss her. >> one of caitlin's friends told me she drove him to the airport when the city was in lock down mode following the marathon bombings because nobody else would. julie loncich, wbz.

chance but to shoot a man who would not drop his gun. officers got a call about a gunfight. they found a man armed carrying a friend shot in the leg. they told that man three times to stop his gun and instead of listening he threatened them. >> nobody likes to take a life. if you're going to point auto at our officers we're going to protect ourselves. >> officers killed the man with the four. two other men were hospitalized. former patriot aaron hernandez settled a lawsuit. alexander bradley said he shot her in the eye after they argued a nightclub in february of 2014. bradley's attorneys said the matter has been settled but no further details were released. bradley was with hernandez when

bradley has been granted immunity on those murder charges. a convicted child killer will get a new trial. joseph cousin was convicted of shooting trina pasad. he got a new trial yesterday. the suffolk county da plans to appeal. we've got some big developments in campaign 2016 to tell you about. on the republican side one candidate threatening to sue another. donald trump argues ted cruz is not eligible to become president because cruz was born in canada. trump is threatening to take that claim to court unless cruz drops the negative ads he's campaigning and running. the

gloves, a hat, several layers out there. any exposed skin could be exposed to actually dangerous wind chills and the potential for frostbite quickly. plus your car may have some issues too. check the tire pressure, car battery. keep a winter safety kit in the trunk. don't forget about our furry friends. bring them inside. this is just too cold for the next couple of days. keep them warm. make sure they have plenty of warmth from you and hopefully they're inside snuggling up with you. slopes forecast, if you're heading to the north and traveling at all and want to take on the slopes here temperatures will be brutally cold. it's going to be pretty nice actually today with the fresh snow expected. snow squalls anticipated. the wind picks up later in the day. sunday a high of 2 below.

better at 18 degrees for president's day. we have wind chill advisories out as well from the cape and islands. it's just going to be cold no matter where you are. depending on where you were we could have temperatures in the single digits and then wind chill values much colder. especially this morning it varies from place to place. 12 boston, 11 worcester, 9 nashua. the highs in the low 20s or upper teens. falling to the low teens and then single digits. we continue to fall below zero in many spots. boston 5 below, worcester 11 below. sunday morning's low of 5 below may reach the record of 3 below set in 1934. monday's low zero. 14 degrees below is record.

eric fisher on wbz news welcome back. a good saturday morning to you. u.s. airlines will bid to have routes to cuba. u.s. carriers will have 15 days to submit applications to the department of transportation. it starts to process of bringing airlines and travelers a step closer to scheduled flights between the two countries for the first time in more than 50 years. the u.s.

in lowell, wbz this morning. that school bus driver charged with drunk driving with kids on board and crashing in dudley is now suspended from the job. scott porier pleaded not guilty. his blood alcohol level was three times over the legal limit. he claims he had only taken cough medicine. police say 70-year-old john whitty shot and killed john williams after learns that williams had an affair with his girlfriend. that girlfriend died recently and whitty learned about the affair when he found a love letter in her belongings. a strange accident at logan airport yesterday morning. a re fuelling van was accidentally left in drive and ran into a jet blew plane with passengers on board. no injuries were reported but the plane was taken outs of service. pope francis is in mexico city this morning ready to make history.

the tunnel exit. >> my understanding is this is an incredibly infrequent event. >> our i team has learned in 2007 five accidents involving manhole covers and storm grates occurred in less than a week. this accident on 128 was one on them. since then the state inspects manhole covers every 2 years. the one that came loose friday morning was last inspected in june of 2014. >> it's a terrible tragedy. >> the results are expect ed later today. depending on what crews found inspections could go to other highways outside the city of boston. katy brace, wbz this morning. >> caitlin clavette was on her way to work for milton elementary school. it will be open at 11:00 this morning for parents who need guidance to talk to their students about the brief.

we have been doing for over a decade. we're really excited to welcome back gooden clock, an old female lion dance troupe from boston, the only only female lion dance team in the u.s.. they are bringing their lion club troop who are 6 to 9. there are loads of other things to do. lots of performance, lots of art making, lots of audience participation. it's one of our biggest days of the year. >> this is school vacation week coming up too so a lot of people don't realize this is a special place that we have right here on the north shore of massachusetts. talk about why this night be a thing for parents to look at to come up and visit you guys. >> right. one of the gems of the museum is our art and nature center. it's a full on family-friendly hands on center. we currently have an exhibition called sizing it up, art and scale and nature.

the coast guard said the anthem of the seas is seaworthy again and ready to set sail this morning. last weekend it sailed directly into a massive storm with hurricane force winds and waves 30 feet high. the thousands of passengers on boards were tossed around like toys. four people suffered minor injuries. one of the ships propellers was damaged 678 the coast guard spent the last two days expecting the ship from stem to stern and has given the people were very happy to get back on dry land. a robot build by the ocean graphic institute will be used do search for the data recorder from the el faro.

feels worse when you factor in the wind. at 11 p.m. tonight the real feel between 20 and 30 degrees below zero. the wind gusting between 30 and 35 miles per hour. sustained winds still bad between 10 and 20 miles per hour resulting in a real feel forecast sunday morning between 20 and 30 degrees below zero. by 3:00 p.m. on sunday the wind subsides a bit. it's still going to be cold but not criteria for a warning. worcester and boston for valentine's day we'll take a look at the records here for the record low maximum. 7 degrees in worcester for going for a forecast of 6. same in boston, a record of 10 degrees in the forecast. those low temperatures starting off with 11 below in worcester, might tie that one. boston has a good shot at that record but we'll see because that sensor is right at logan airport with the ocean that could effect some records.
