live at the back bay station tonight ken macleod wbz news. >> thanks so much. people look resigned to just waiting there. and that's not the only station filled with crowd and confusion. >> we go live to christina hager at south station. similar scene christina. >> reporter: well a crowd of people look up a at the big board trying to -- up at the big board trying to figure out confusing commute and host are being direct off the computer rail platforms and underground to the t platform. >> i will take the red line and orange line and back bay. >> reporter: extra employees were dispatched to south station for the evening commute to help commuters sort out confusing trips home. the hamburgs were on a cal egg- - college visit. >> they said the transit system was messed up so we took a cab. >> reporter: this morning amtrak announced the signal system at tower one had failed.

bill shields has been out there talking with passengers and is live in quincy i am sure you've had an earful. >> reporter: that's an understatement we got an earful as did everybody else. but you see people here waiting. the red line train stopped and everybody got off. some are waiting for buses but the question for commuters down below trying to get to kingston there are not enough trains right now. with commuter rail trains limited it had a ripple effect on the trains. red line trains were packed and there were long waits for the few commuter trains there was confusion and sometimes anger. >> i made it to work the morning was not fun and i got off at andrew square and walking to financial district because. >> reporter: from andrews square. >> yes because there was a broken down train. >> hopefully it will stop and it didn't. >> reporter: blame me.

his cruiser during a high speed pursuit. chase began in revere but ended when he crashed on marginal street in chelsea. the officer was taken to mass general after witnesses helped to pull him out of the cruiser. >> when he came out and put on the floor he was saying help his legs were hurting because when whoa tried to pick him up to walk he wasn't able to and i grabbed his legs and a pedestrian helping us out grabbed his articles and wecaredied him over here. >> the the officer is expected to make full recovery -- make a full recovery. the suspect is on the lose driving a white civic honda sedan. there are more calls for brian joyce to resign. joyce refused to answer questions when he left his home today. the massachusetts fiscal alliance presented a leter to the senate president -- letter to the senate president to start the process of exspelling joyce. yesterday fbi raided his law office in canton.

as we head to tomorrow night the weak storm system approaches and brings a curtin of wet know -- curtain of know fall but some flakes will transition to -- snowfall but some flakes will transition and we will get a break and more on saturday. a coating to an inch possible and a chance for 1 to 3 in northern new england. it's not a lot but better than nothing for the ski areas. the weekend reminds me of a march forecast. saturday a few showers gustysouthwest -- gusty southwest winds and quieter and brighter and more change for sunday night into monday. another quick moving system could bring us a shot of wet snowfall and rain sunday night into early on a monday morning. so very fast moving jet stream zonial and keeps things on weaker side and as we look at weekend 50 on saturday. upper 40s on sunday.

update on breaking news a shelter in place order at umass amhearst a hostile armed person is seen near the hall.

at the hall from google earth. this is a freshman dorm we are talking about located in the southwest portion of the umass campus a freshman dorm. officers are telling students to shelter in place until further notice. and they have been sending emergency alerts to student via text and e-mails. police are saying it's possibly two suspects are involved and i have to say i have been contacted by a umass amherst parent being transparent but unnerving for a parent to watch this from afar and seeing it as it evolves. >> and they have given a description of one of the people the hostile person wearing a sweatshirt and gold chain. people told to stay indoors and we will follow this throughout evening. in the meantime, as we head out today tonight. >> cold and calm tonight. we will be back in the single digits and teens but a quiet day tomorrow. and the weekend, feeling like march near 50 both days and if
