i want to get you to yo to video of the mess that was made situation. the crowds all of the frustrated commuters it was images of winters' past but amtrak and keolis the company that runs the commuter rail from massachusettssays it had broken signal problem. i can tell you it took commuters 2 to 3 hours to get home for what would at this . chicago be a short -- typically be a short community. the general manager for mbta spoke with wbz radio and here's what he had to say. >> amtrak crews successfully restored control of the switches at south station tower one. so trains will now begin to proceed to south station per the normal schedules and we will no longer need to have passengers disembark at outlying stations. >> reporter: so what we saw yesterday passengers disembarking they would get off

by a motor vehicle in traffic. >> reporter: police closed down humboldt in roxbury for several investigate a serious -- investigated a serious accident a mer and 5-month-old daughter are in the hospital. both in serious condition and the baby with the most severe injuries. >> severe head trauma. >> reporter: the main concern is the well-being of the mother and her daughter, police are thankful for one thing. the driver stuck around. >> we have a cooperative motorists that did stop and try to render assistance and made police. >> reporter: police say that man's cooperation plus help from neighbors should make the investigation a quick one. the hope is that the mother and her baby recovers at a similar pace. >> our prayers to the mother and the 5 month old girl and we hope they will be okay. >> reporter: police are not saying whether that mother and her daughter are from around here or if they were just visiting. as for the driver, right now,

live in roxbury susie steimle wbz this morning. just about 6:06 on your friday morning. we want to tell you about a scare at umass amherst a shelter in place order has been lifted. lock down was put in place after an armed attack on a student shortly after 5 last night. police say a student in the freshman pieron the hall dorm was hit in the head and possibly pistol whipped. he suffered a cut to the head but injuries are minor. two suspects got away and police say they are college aged but not student at umass. with reports of an armed man on campus police issued a shelter in place order that lasted for two hours. several students say it was terrifying. >> i woke up and i opened up my door and there was cops in the hallway with rifles. >> reporter: what did you see? >> i just saw a bunch of cops turn around and went back in my room. >> we were wondering what

he-mails telling us there was a gun or something incident with two people where seen with a gun and they had the area on lock down. >> police are taking a look at security video from the dorm as they searchp for the suspects. campus police are expected to provide another update coming up at 10 this morning. right now a manhunt is underway for the suspect just named in a murder investigationpolice are look for kenneth manning you see there. he is considered armed and dangerous. manning is wanted for the death of a 36-year-old woman whose body was found in her apartment on monday. police say surveillance video shows him inside the building on that same day. a scare at a boston hotel leading to evacuations. this s.w.a.t. team surrounded the marriott in dorchester last night and arrested a man who barricaded himself inside. police evacuated a floor of hotel rooms just as a precaution. a man is in custody is wanted on domestic violence charges in connecticut.

passengers all of the crowds it reminded a lot of people of last year. all of the problems with winter but again, we are told it had nothing to do with the weather but very strictly the signal problem. yesterday, when we spoke with a keolis representative we were told they had no idea when problem would be fixed. we did learn this morning that it has been repaired and the mbta general manager spoke with wbz radio about the efforts from amtrak to fection it. let's listen. >> they worked all night. i want to give them credit they worked all night on this and were able to restore automatic function to the complex control system there. >> reporter: as a result of that all trains will be able to go in and out of south station this morning. which was not the case yesterday so well, a head over to south station and try to get a check of how the commute is going there as well.

that for sure. live at back bay station in boston nicole jacobs wbz this morning. >> thanks very much. as she mentioned the good news is the train issues have been fixed but it may not calm commuter frustration. jon keller takes a closer look at the root of the problem. >> reporter: good morning. are you looking forward to your train commute this morning? probably not. if you are one of the thousands of commuters who endured hidous delays and jammed cars and platforms yesterday because of a problem with amtrak switching equipment and since it's likely not your first experience with such failure perhaps you have been wondering who is to blame. well it's been 45 years since the remnants of america's private railroads were consolidated as amtrak a for profit corporation that needs survive. over the years, air and car travel have received much more support than amtrak. even though parts of its service especially the heavily

from washington to boston have grown ever more popular. critics of amtrak have poorly run. supporters point to the democrats blame republicans for shorting it but amtrak has not thrived during periods of complete democrat control in dc. fast forward to today. and underfund maintenance is a chronic problem for amtrak. commuter nightmare of the past 24 hours illustrates. failure comes just days after the mbta sued amtrak over their effort to make the state pay them pour more than 28 million bucks a year for the privilege overturning a long-standing contract where they pay us. of course, the t has its own dire fiscal problems. so, who's to blame for this nightmare? bad planning, bad budgeting bad politics bad karma festering
