trees and power lines taken down and streets flooded out. those storms have moved the cleanup is underway. but we are not out of the woods. good afternoon i am chris mckinnon. >> i am kathryn hauser thanks for being with us. right now 7,000 customers are still without power and we are in for more wind and rain this afternoon. danielle has latest. >> hey it's going to be -- not going to be nearly as bad as overnight but there's another round that we will talk about in a second. this is a rare it be event this is the earliest severe thunderstorm watch on record for boston. the only other watch we had in massachusetts in february is on 22nd and 1997. and we also had a record for daily wind gusts at blue hills observatory they measured wind speeds but going down in the record books at 76 miles per hour the old record 75 back in 1965. now that wind is not nearly as strong as overnight it's gusty

now there's a wind advoicery for southeastern -- advisories for southeastern massachusetts and 7 p.m. gusts 40 to 50 miles per hour so not the 60 plus we had but nonetheless with the rain and some of the trees weakened from the wind earlier there may be isolated pockets of damage a-- as a result. 36 in manchester he. feels like-- manchester he. feels like the end of april. 40s on the cape and all the rain is towards the east and the sun is breaking out in spots but there's one more round coming in to the berkshires the showers will spread east through the early nature. nothing severe and you may want wet weather gear there will be at least scattered shower activity either side of the mass turnpike light rain for the most part a few downpoursen embedded in there for the evening commute home and overnight tonight we drop back into the 30s. big changes on the way for tomorrow and then another warmup we will talk about it in a couple minutes.

the storm creating big problems for commuters. power lines were brought down forcing the closure of a busy road. >> it was a headache but the road reopened moments ago and susie steimle is live in nate wick more on the cleanup. >> reporter: good afternoon. a lot of drivers thankful to have the road reopened and we have a front row seat as to why it was closed for so long. look at the power lines along the road here. these were in the middle of the highway until a while ago. and this caused quite the headache. for the morning commute. in the 60 degree sun line the cleanup begins crews dealt with down trees across the region but in natick they have this. >> this is a little bigger than normal. usually don't see poles and wires down. >> reporter: mother nature snapped a telephone pole in two leaving power lines draped across the roadway like ropes. shutting down this busy section

this is something you could ordinary never do and i am walking down the middle of what usually is a bessy route 9. it's been -- busy route 9 closed like this since 2:30 in the morning. >> traffic 55 miles an hour you can't on the road when the guys are work in the middle so it's easier to reroute the traffic and get them away from the danger so our guys and the public is safe. >> reporter: drivers were forced to loop around the mall finding creative ways to get to work. >> i am going to be late for the meeting that i am going to. i am trying a get to worcester. so it's just i shouldn't have come this way. >> reporter: the be in-- >> the back way to the mall is not too bad and then the macy's closed off and then you have to go in the parking lot to get out. >> reporter: it was a impressive storm. >> it woke me up. >> reporter: powerful enough to stop the morning commute in its tracks. so as you can see traffic is flowing normally along route 9

causing the crash. the suv flipped and homeowner ran to help a woman inside had to climb out the back of the suv. >> you know went outside and came in and said holy, this is practically in the house. >> yeah i could hear her in the car and i tried to on the door and it wouldn't pop open and the neighbor came over and i got a flash loot and came back out and she climbed out the back window. >> the fire chief tells us one firefighter was treated for injuries at the hospital. and was released last night. everyone else on the fire truck was okay. grief counselors are on hand in barre after a high school senior was killed in a crash. her younger brother in critical condition. the crash happened along five miles from quabbin high school. the school opened two hours late because of the officials were worried about icy roads. brittany murch was driving her brother when she lost control

griffin is treated at umass in worcester and investigators are looking at the role of ice and speed in the crash. a cambridge police officer has been cited accused of hitting a bicyclist with his car and taking off. 28-year-old ryan callinan is on adstraight i have been leave from the department. he was off duty at the time of the accident and driving his personal car. the victim was treated and released from the hospital. work on the wynn resort casino is on hold defending against another lawsuit. city of somerville claims resort needs to offset the environmental impact of the thousands of extra cars that will come to the area daily. until that is resolved the wynn is canceling 7 upcoming job fairs and freezing the hiring of construction workers residents in everett say they have had enough of the back and forth. >> other cities should have no say at all in what this city does. >> i wish they would make up their mind once and for all and get it going. >> governor baker says he plans

>> the coast guard rushed out into the storm hitting 10 to 12 foot waves and the coast guard boat capsized and five crew members wearing protective gear had to swim to shore. a helicopter came in to airlift the fishermen to safety? we have been talking about the the weather all day. >> bids from the gulf coast to here and the wind it was howling. >> we have gusts topping out over 80 miles per hour. hive look at boston where you wouldn't know it's different afternoon and there's a bit of a wind out there but not shake the camera like this morning. 83 miles per hour hurricane force the 74 miles per hour 69 miles per hour in boston.

some of the peak wind ghosts came through. wind is no longer damaging. at least for now. it's still dusty -- gusty between 20 and 35 miles per hour and that will be the case right on through the early to mid afternoon but hour by hour the wind is going to ramp up not for everybody but from the south coast back down to cape cod we may see gusts that top hour. between mid afternoon and early evening so 7, 8:00 still gusts over 40 miles per hour and because we have the heavy rain and strong wind some of the branches may be weaken and that's why there may be additional isolated pockets of outages on cape cod and islands far southern bristol and plymouth county. i want to playthings through to show outwind stays active tonight and it's gust which win we have had the sun but one more round of rain coming in back across eastern new york

and on the backsides there's snow so it's a tale of two worlds the warmth 63 inia 53 in backside. we are warmer right now in boston than atlanta and dallas too. so there's been colder air across the remainedder of the nation and we will get back tomorrow. so hour by hour there's not going to be severe weather we saw this morning but may be a couple downpours. 3:30 scattered showers and downpours near providence to southeastern massachusetts for the evening drive and not going to slow you down that much but there will be pockets of rain that linger either side of the mass turnpike until 8 or 9 and overnight tonight skies stay mostly cloudy and by tomorrow morning we get breaks in the fie features blustery february feel.

another warmup saturday around 40. and that's normal for this time of year. and we get a southwest wind coming in ahead of a cold front that puts on the brakes in eastern canada. arctic air to the north that never make it -- makes it in here. so it's like the warmth we get another warmup coming he ever overnight tonight dipping into the 30s. blustery and colder tomorrow. 37 for a high so we will be 20 plus degrees colder than today but factor in the wind. 20s for most us. that's what you want to dress for. monday. mid-50s an isolated shower called cold front goes back into the 40s tuesday and kathryn. this afternoon public hearing will be held on the future of prouty garden that would be covered up as part of the hospital's plan to expand.
