old died after drowning in the inground pool. a family member saw griffin lamar's body in the pool around 8 during a ly alt him out died hospital. authorities are investigating. and developing at noon a pothole on 495 backing up traffic in averhill and crews shut down all but one -- haverhill and crews shut this is causing quite a headache. >> reporter: police are on the merrimack river bridge diverting traffic on the southbound lanes. chunks of concrete are loose and some completely came out at the expansion joint. you can see the merrimack river through the hole. this is happening just before ward hill at exit 48 the two right lanes have been closed since 8 this morning ancheck out that backup. repairs were supposed to take 3 to 4 hours to finish up. and be done around noon but

finish repairs. this has created a massive backup and traffic back to north essex community college at exit 52. just avoid 495 south in haverhill. also boston police say they don't feel safe and are asking for more protection on the streets. the police union sent a letter to the commissioner quipnt. wbz anna meiler is live in boston with that part of the marty walsh outside city hallre strongly worded letter demanding more weapons and equipment for boston police officers. the boston herald published this thee-page letter from police unions demanding more protection for officers following the recent deadly attacks on police in dallas and baton rouge. union stated officers need to be equipped with long guns ballistic helmets and shields and exat that loaded magazines and more.

until the cows come home but that won't stop a rifle round aimed at police officer's chest. mayor walsh says he was taken back by some of the language in the letter and doesn't believe it reflects how all officers feel but he says he takes their safety very seriously. >> we have the best trained police department in the country. we have the equipment for them and if we need to make sure they have more equipment then that's something that's my responsibility as mayor to make sure they have it and if officers feel unsafe we have to make sure they because they do a important job. >> it's a hard time to be a police officer right now and i think everybody sometimes feels underappreciate and under attack and i think he is speaking from the heart. but you know, i wish some of the words he didn't use. a little offensive but, i think it's hard time to be a police officer and i know where he is coming from. >> reporter: commissioner evans says he is taking the union's concerns very seriously and he is taking their request under

meiler wbz news. >> thanks so much. right now, there are worries on the south shore dangerous rip tides forcing swimers to get out of the water at popular beaches. jim smith is live at scituate with the very latest. jim. >> reporter: good afternoon. i have breaking news. we just received word a few minutes ago that all beaches in scituate are now reopened to swimming because of concerns about riptides that was not the case earlier. but now they are reopened to swimming which is good news here at humarock beach it is packed and the beach reopened right now but that doesn't mean water is not still rough. >> riptides are strong right now. >> reporter: the surf is up at humarock beach but not just thewaves on thursday they closed the beach and three others because of riptides. today surfers were in the water

now to a developing story in can't cut. this -- connect cut. -- connecticut crews are trying to figure out what caused a explosion at a multifallly -- family home. several people were inside the home including children. two adults are in critical condition and a 7- suffered significant injuries. >> what i can't say-- can say it's a miracle no one was killed at the house. this is just a devastating scene, catastrophic damage and the fact everyone survived is truly a miracle. >> the blast was so powerful the home's front door flew into the front yard of the home across the street. the cause of the blast is under investigation. four patients under 16 are being treated. doctors say all are expected to survive.
