and now at 5:30. the never ending construction project. crews have been working on the bridge since 2008. the project was supposed to be finished in 2012 and there's no end insight. we're talking about the water street bridge connecting danvers and salem. and people living and working nearby have had enough. let's be honest. who doesn't like to whine about construction. >> it should have been done have plenty of reason to complain. >> it's a mess, it's been too long, and something's got to be done about it. >> reporter: the water state bridge is a state project that began in 2008. the same year that richard ventura opened up the dunkin' donuts. >> i think the whole town is frustrated. >> customers pass him by,

inconvenient. it's kind of outrage actually. >> we don't know when it's going to be done. >> reporter: the delay has not just taken a bite out of the bottom line. the drilling has caused the walls to crack. >> reporter: the building would actually shake. >> kind of, yes, a little bit. it's like a earthquake. >> reporter: they had to cancel the project right in the middle because of a design flaw so after eight years and counting, residents are baffled about how a bridge so short can take so long to finish. >> we are not talking about the -- bridge. >> get it done. >> reporter: we just heard back and they say the bridge project is on schedule for completion by the end of this year. tonight investigators in connecticut are trying to

at the time of the blast, seven people, including several children were inside the building in vernon. four people were trapped in the rubble. and three are in the hospital and everyone is expected to survive. >> what i can say is that it was truly a miracle that no one was killed at this house. this is just a devastating scene, catastrophic damage and the fact that everyone survived is truly a miracle. >> reporter: the blast was so powerful that the front door flew into the home all the way across the street. let's go back live to lisa and david who are live in sturbridge tonight. >> reporter: thank you so much. the pan-mass challenge is such a huge undertaking. we're talking about 6300 writers going through 46 different towns and the mastermind of all this is billy star. >> he worked on it out of his

what's coming up. how do you feel? >> it's a perfect plan and we're ready. >> and the weather looks good. >> the weather looks whatever it is. >> we know how bad it can be. >> i've been reading -- and they've been sending us weather advisories. and it sounds mostly good and nonetheless whatever comes, we'll deal with it. >> $46 million is such a huge figure. how in a few sentences did it to $46 million this year? >> people wanted to play a role. and for those of us -- most of us -- who are not doctors or clinicians there had to be a way to join the war on cancer. and funding it is what we do.

cure might take. we thought we'd look at a mass general researcher who has focused on a micro chip. technicians with use the chip to filter nta of blood. the chip separates the regular cells the cancer cells. and that allows the scientists to look at the genetic fingerprint c ta and some doctors are looking at injecting a synthetic form of vitamin d. and some scientists believe the key to a cure could researchers are looking at extracting immune cells a patient's body, reengineering them, and injecting them back into the body to fight the cancer. amazing research being done in boston. and that's the other big part

celebration, eric. >> absolutely. and i just want to echo the sentiments there as well. so many viewers and twitter followers have been donating to the cause. the weather team is up over $8500, the generosity is amazing. and what a philanthropic place we live. the crowd is getting the bikes ready. tomorrow morning is an early start. and every bell, it's a first time pan mass rider. it's going to be a warm and humid day. we talk about much higher humidity. we'll have air temperatures in the 80s. definitely, stay hydrated. in terms of storms, we're looking at afternoon. most of the riders will have a good five hours under their belts before the storms develop. a northwesterly breeze. and outside this evening.

to around 90. and concord in falmouth. and thn temps outside the harbor at 75 degrees. we'll stay around 70 and the clouds will be on the increase and the humidity will be on the increase overnight tonight. we have 24 hours of it. and it will be sticky tomorrow. here's the timeline. we start with partly cloudy skies and maybe a stray shower early in the around noon. and that starts to the west. as we head into the afternoon, those will be moving east and the best chance of storms is along and south of the mass pike. by 3:00, many of the riders heading to bourne, it's going to be a close call for people out on the course. and for any festivities tomorrow evening. a chance for downpours and storms and the main issue will be for locally heavy rain and

and most of this is done by 7:00 to 8:00. the storm prediction center has a marginal risk, or may reach severe limits with the strong winds. that's the one thing we'll keep an eye on. and some localized flash flooding on the streets. and for any of the riders on the course, i think the storms will be so late in the day that many will be finished with the da on saturday. and sunday we change out the air and it's going to get much more comfortable. tomorrow the humidity and we'll switch it to a northwesterly breeze and that lowers the humidity. and it lowers the temperatures a little bit. and we'll be in the 80s on sunday. we have temps in the 80s tomorrow with a chance of early day storms. and tomorrow gusty and cooler with highs in the 70s.

sturbridge for the kickoff of the pan-mass challenge, now less than an hour away from the opening ceremonies that will be broadcast on wbz tv. this is a big deal. it's become the biggest athletic fundraising event in the entire country, raising more money than any other event like its. >> we're talking about 10s of millions of dollars. $46million the goal this year alone thanks to the cyclists who have been room. and many have made it through and are getting the bikes ready. this is registration and wbz is so proud to be the official sponsor of the pmc, media sponsor. we'll be taking over the commonwealth tomorrow morning. 6300 riders strong. distances range from 25 miles to 200 miles. last year, 6000 riders raised $45 million.
