three minutes in set the tone for the patriots defense. >> they were active right out of the gate. being aware of what was going on. sees the ball tipped up and grab it's and allows a big play from collins. that's what you're going to need from the defense. you're going to need big plays and come up big in critical situations to bail the offense out. i'm not saying that they won't be able to move the football. i'm talking about that didn't have their quarterback. the steelers didn't have roethlisberger for ten games but they got by. so i think the defense is going to need to continue to make big plays like that. >> hold them at bay. most of this unit is back. >> yeah. >> from this defense. bill belichick likes that. they feel good about what they can do defensively. >> you were talking about the
11:01 pm
are just followers and young players but are now leaders. malcon brown is a leader. terrence brown talks about coaching everybody else. i think that's important for him to take over that position so quickly and be a leader on this team. >> thanks. we will see you next week. >> great job today. >> same to you. >> steve burton, the birthday boy, let's send it back to you. >> thank you very much. we have much more to come including bill belichick's next week. they take on the chicago bears. yes. we have patriots all access at 7:30 and kickoff at 8:00. coming up on sunday afternoon, you want to see this. an nfl films recap of the patriots 2015 season entitled fight to the finish. it's sunday at 2:30 here on wbz. we will be right back with bill

hello! it's our new intern, bart's first week here at td bank, he's a robot from one of those other banks. we're training him to bank human. i am banking assistance & registration technology. wait, wait, wait. but you can call me, banking assistance & registration technology. hi amy. thank you. thank you. that is not protocol manager jenna. is here. at td bank we do things differently, like having the longest hours of any bank. don't just bank.
11:05 pm
>> all right. welcome back, everyone. the drive of the game, how about this, four plays, 48 yards. it took them 1:38. it ended with the touchdown. 56 yards. that was on the screen. and then a one-yard touchdown
11:06 pm
gillette stadium. we're waiting for bill belichick to take the podium. what did you think. >> we've had 12 practices. we talked about this in the pregame. wasn't going to put too much stock in the numbers. i thought he settled in after the run by james white. pick five guys to go with. they started to move the ball more once stork got in there. i thought defensive depth was the key for the game. the first four games, how are differently without having brady in them. don't put too much on his shoulders. just let him play. we need to seymour bennett, what he looks like. >> he is big. >> man, i was impressed with jamie collins. this is the first time that we have seen real life contact. to watch him in practice operate, a walk-through is a walk-through. jamie looks about 10 to 15 pounds bigger. he was sick last year.
11:07 pm
healthy. from a strength standpoint and a quickness standpoint, i thought -- the health of those two guys, that's your front seven right there. >> what did you think of the offense play. there were times that he got the football and times that he was sacked. he has to figure that out. that's having the clock in your head. he got a three-step drop and just sat there. nice job there. jimmy ha pocket and get the feel. other times right here he's got bennett matched up outside. this is the match-up that you want. smaller safety. jimmy will take this and learn from it and advance it right here. he knows that. josh will coach him up to do that. >> it's a good first step for him. he's been dealing with a lot. he's been getting ready to do this for over a year now. it's definitive now, he has the first four games. he needs to increase the tempo
11:08 pm
preseason, but is the defense further ahead than you thought it would be. >> collins flowers looked good. >> yeah. all of a sudden you have a guy, we got to see chris long a little bit. he was good in leverage. i thought the safeties played well tonight. and for the most part, you know, you have butler competing for a good quarter, quart and a half. i thought the defense went i thought it was going to. >> we will be back after the break. we're waiting on patriots head coach bill belichick to step to
11:09 pm

? ram trucks are reaching new heights when it comes to capability and efficiency. the ram heavy duty is the most capable full-sized pickup on the road today. and, the ram 1500 is the most fuel-efficient, full-sized pickup. ever. so what does that mean? it means ram trucks give you the best of both worlds. so go big. and go far. guts. glory. ram.
11:12 pm
fifth quarter presented by your new england ford dealers. >> welcome back. the patriots beat the saints by 34-22. they will take on the chicago bears next week. in the meantime we're waiting on coach belichick. he is coming to the podium as we speak. >> it's always good to get that first one under your this. eam through a lot of practices, going all the way back to the and then 12 practices this year, plus all of the other stuff. so good to get out on the field and compete in a game. i thought we did some things the way that we kind of tried and want to do them. there's some other things that we obviously need to work on. but that's part of the process. saints are a good team. and, you know, they're very competitive in all areas. so i feel like we got a good
11:13 pm
competition. and got a good evaluation of some of the things that we're kind of doing okay, not great. and some other things that we definitely need to shore up. so played a lot of people. got a good amount of playing time for a lot of guys. we will see how all of that looks, you know, in the next day or so when we get a chance to break down the film. but it's good to get out there and get going. and again, a good week for in terms of the practices and then the game tonight against the saints. they're a really good team. a lot of respect for sean, the organization, and really good to work against. we got a lot better here the last three days. it was very beneficial for us. >> bill, i know you haven't
11:14 pm
initial thoughts on jimmy's performance. >> yeah. we will take a look at everybody. there's a lot of people out there. i don't want to try to make an evaluation without really looking at it. >> it looked like in the first half there was a good variety of situational -- some good situational football opportunities offense. two-minute situations. >> yeah. two-minute. long yardage. short yardage. a couple fourth downs. two point plays. a lot of situations came up for our team. and coaching staff, players for all of us to really work off of and coach off of. so, you know, that was good. we had a lot of plays in the kicking game. that's a good balance between
11:15 pm
and then we saw a lot of the, you know, basic matchups that you want to see. so that part of it worked out well. >> bill, you had to have been pleased about turnovers. you guys -- >> always. >> four turnovers. didn't commit any turnovers yourselves. >> any time that we don't turn the ball over, that's a good thing. defensively we got the turnovers. we got the two toow game. at the end that ended up being the difference in the final score. a great job by the defense to not only turn the ball over but convert it into two touchdowns. those are obviously huge plays for us. offensively, we had our hands on a couple other balls. they didn't get them but there was a couple time that's we needed to get the ball out of their hands.
11:16 pm
good returners back there. they handled the ball well in the kicking situations. so that was -- again, there were some good things to work with, good things to coach from. >> bill, obviously summer football, you're one that likes to get the conditioning in. tonight would be the case for that with the heat and humidity. wondering how beneficial that was tonight and how it played a factor getting guys extra reps in that first half. >> yeah. i thought that was good. we had there were also -- it just seemed like a good amount of kind of longer drives on both sides. there were times that we were out there for eight, nine, ten plays defensively. and there were a few times that we were out there for eight, nine, ten plays offensively. the longer drives is where the players build their conditioner and stamina. it was good to have a few of those. i think the players themselves could see, you know, after
11:17 pm
especially when you're running off of the field with substitutions like you have to with the saints to match up against their offense or what we do offensively, using different personnel combinations, you combine the running on and off the field with a locker drive. i think that was definitely a good evaluation of our conditioning tonight. i wouldn't say it was bad. but it certainly could be better. we need to continue to work on that. but it was -- tonight you know, just to see where we're at on that front. >> bill, trey flowers made that big sack and touchdown tonight. he seemed to be very active in the back field throughout his snaps. how much were you able to learn about him from a rookie. what have you seen about him in the training camp? >> trey has had a good spring and a good camp so far.
11:18 pm
to see a whole lot of him last year. he fought through, you know, an injury and really couldn't be as effective as what he wanted to be. so we ended up having the surgery done on the early side. so he was actually able to, you know, get into the spring, you know, quicker than guys who would have had it at the end of the season. he was ahead by three, three and a half months. he was able participant in the spring workouts. i think the fact that he went on ar so early last year is benefiting him this year because he's had a full year of training and a full year of the installation and, you know, all of the preparation going into this season. it's good to have him out there. he's done a good job for us when he's had an opportunity to play. he played some of the kicking game. you know, he's got a lot of
11:19 pm
pretty much daily in one way or another with some positive plays. he's a hard-working kid. hopefully he will continue to get better. >> do you have any update on malcolm mitchell and the injury that he suffered? >> no. >> any more questions? >> steve or no? >> yes. >> oh. >> i know you had to be happy with tyler with all of the adversity that he has gone ro >> yeah. you bet. tyler, you know, of course we knew two years ago in the '14 season that he wouldn't play that year. you know, last year unfortunately he, you know, didn't far in the training camp again. nobody has worked harder than tyler. he's there early and he stays late. he never complains. always does extra.
11:20 pm
he's had a good opportunity all spring training camp. he's done a good job for us and got a chance to play tonight. had positive plays tonight. so, yeah, happy for him. happy that he's out there and got through the game. and, you know, can just building on tonight's performance. >> any more questions >> good. okay. thank you. >> there you go. that's bill belichick. we're waiting for jimmy to come to the podium. in the meantime, we're going to take a break. we will be back with the patriots fifth quarter right
11:21 pm
11:22 pm
>> i always go in with that mind-set though. like i said earlier this week, your guess was as good as mine who was starting and how much we were playing and everything. just having that mind-set, it's always good. and it came true tonight. >> walk us through that first near touchdown pass to james white. it looked from up top to be a screen pass type of situation. >> the long one you're talk going? >> yeah. >> yeah. he made a tremendous play. there was a lot of guys who the linemen got down field. it was a well-designed play. i thought he was in personally, but tough call. >> malcolm mitchell was making some plays out there. how tough was it to see him go down with an injury like that. >> i don't know what the injury is yet. but it didn't look very good
11:23 pm
field. he was playing well. hopefully he will come back as soon as possible and keep rolling. >> we asked you a little bit this week about deal withing adversity and things that can come at you. the first quarter was a little bit unconvenient i think. >> uh-huh. >> and then the second quarter was much better. what was the demeanor like on the side line in between those? you probably said it's supposed to be difficult at times. >> yeah. it wasn't our best start. we started slow, which we never want to that's going to happen sometimes. you're not always going to start the right way. it's how you react to that. it was a good experience being put in a difficult situation and seeing how the guys responded and how everyone responded. i think we reacted to them in the right way. >> jimmy, you didn't have all of your weapons out there. what did you think of the guys out there? you and bennett had things going on early on. >> you never know who you're going to get in the preseason. but we do a good job in practice mixing and matching
11:24 pm
play today. it was a pretty good result. >> jimmy, when you were running out of the tunnel, you were 10 or 15 yards ahead of the next person. were you running with a little more adrenaline tonight? and when did you finally feel like you could settle down in the game. >> i don't know. hopefully i got a little faster. i don't know. kind of happened. and, you know, i think we settled down after a series or two. we started slow, wh want to do. it was everyone as a whole. i think we reacted well to the slow start. >> jimmy, as the first half continued, how did your pocket presence change? did you get a sense of being more comfortable in the pocket and moving up? there was the sack early where they got you from the outside. it seemed like you were able to manage the pocket more from there. >> yeah. just, you know, having those guys up front, it's a
11:25 pm
they did a great job tonight. the sack, it wasn't a good one. i take responsibility for that. it was my fault. but just stepping up in the pocket like you said, that's a huge part of it and trying to avoid the rushers. >> jimmy, two plays that i want to talk about. the first one is the scramble for the 1st down where you did not slide, you took a hit. and the second one was the pass over the middle before steve's first field goal. take us through plays, please. >> yeah. the scramble play, didn't make the side line very happy. it was 4th down. so, you know, just -- i don't know football player inside of me kicked in, i guess. and in the future, i will probably slide in that situation. i wanted to get the first down. the throw over the middle, just error in throw. won't do it in the future. >> do you view these preseason
11:26 pm
the practices? and is it hard not to overreact to how you play out here today. >> i wouldn't put any more importance on it than a practice. a practice you get so many more reps. it's different, i guess. the situations out here are -- they're live. you don't know what the situation is going to be on the next play. you don't know what is going to happen, turnover, whatever it may be. whatever the situation is with practice, preseason game, regular season game, whatever it is, you have as they're important, you know. >> when it comes to this stage in the summer, are you happy with where you are in terms of your overall development and your preparation for the start of the regular season. >> we still have three preseason games. it's hard to judge. i think we're going in the right direction. you know, as an offense, as a team, we have to take it one day at a time, one practice at a time and everything. and we will be where we want to
11:27 pm
>> how about you specifically? >> i think i'm working in the right direction. i said it earlier this week, there are plenty of things that i could work on, things here and there. that's part of being a quarterback. there's a lot of little things here and there. and you want to, you know, be the best at your craft. >> final question? >> all good? all right. thanks, guys. >> there that's patriots quarterback
