. breaking news right now at noon. rio police say u.s. swimmer ryan lochte made up his story. >> authorities claim at the time lochte and other swimmers were actually getting rowdy at a gas worker. >> kate is following this breaking news story for us. >> reporter: ryan lochte is back in the u.s. right now but two other swimmers with being held in an undisclosed location as they wait to be spoken to after being pulled off a flight yesterday -- yet heading home. the story is unravelling. u.s. swimmers jack and gunnar

detained by local authorities. their defense lawyer spokes with reporters saying the athletes were confused and shaken with the judge's decision not to let them leave the country. a brazilian judge had ordered the swimmers seized because of discrepancies in their stories about the robbery sunday night. a local brazilian news site later reported that another judge ordered kongers and bentz' passports to be seized. >> the guy pulled out his gun. he cocked it. put it my forehead. he sed get down. >> reporter: new surveillance video obtained by the daily mail apparently shows the swimmers returning to the village around 7:00 a.m. sunday morning after a night of partying. they appeared to still have their belongs on they will. an investigator says they don't seem distraught and seen joking. lochte is back in the u.s.

changed again last night, he reportedly told nbc there were two gunmen and that the gun was just pointed in his direction. he also said their taxi was not pulled over but was at a gas station. the attorney says officials are just trying to deflect criticism of problems at the rio games. >> those three remaining swimmers will give they are testimony to police today. they are not allowed to leave the country until they do so. live in the satellite center, wbz news. >> thank you very update. developing this noon, extreme drought spreading across eastern massachusetts. >> this is the first time any part of the state has been in an extreme drought since the monitor was created. meteorologist danielle niles joining us with more on the drought. danielle, exactly what areas are affected. >> well, a lot of eastern massachusetts is now impacted. so i just want to give you some numbers here. the extreme drought has been expanding 17% of massachusetts, including the city of boston, 4% of new hampshire, mainly in

47% of massachusetts is in a severe drought category, 15% of new hampshire, this is the driest summer, so june, july, august, we've ever had in the city of boston. obviously a few more weeks to go. but no significant rain in sight. just your typical sprinkles, showers, thunderstorms. so all the areas you see here in red, we're at the severe drought is in effect. the numbers you see on here, the year-to-date departure, the deficit we are in for rainfall, zooming in, areas metro west inside of 495, and southern new hampshire. where are the raindrops? we had a couple sprinkles this morning. but the skies have cleared out now. we will have a few clouds that build in later this afternoon. temperatures running in the mid-80s right now. another above average day. 84 in boston. a lot of mid-80s on the map. we'll stay there through the rest. afternoon. 70s on cape cod.

your ride home. over night tonight, 71. mostly clear. tomorrow looks like another dry day. 87 but a little sea breeze will keep us in the low 80s at the coast. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. >> thank you very much. also developing this noon, boston police stepping up patrols in the back bay after reports of a man peeping into windows. wbz' anna miler is in boston with the latest for us. >> reporter: chris, a resident from this neighborhood says he caught a peeping tom in action. he called police and hung these flyers up all over the area warning people to be on the lookout. this warning in back bay has people feeling creeped out. >> it's pretty disgusting. >> reporter: the thought of a straenger appearing through -- stranger appearing through windows puts people on alert. >> something like this in our neighborhood has people concerned. >> reporter: with you never one resident says she spotted a peeping tom on marlborough street, two weeks later they

the mud. this happened this morning around 8:00. you can see the fisherman was stuck up to his waist. firefighters used ropes, ladders and wore survival suits to go after the man. it took about ten minutes to free him. firefighters say the man was lucky that he had a cell phone on him to call 911. two truck drivers are hospitalized this noon after colliding on the mass pike. the crash happened early this morning around 2:30 in the eastbound lanes in the auburn stretch of the pike. another person was also taken to the hospita those trucks pushed nearly into the trailer. one of the drivers is in serious condition. the other is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. a convicted sex offender is back behind bars accused again of exposing himself. norwood police tell us chad falcone exposed himself to two women in their early 20s near his home tuesday. he is a level two sex offender with a history of exposing himself dating back to 1989. >> quite frankly the neighbors

years. it's a blight to the neighborhood. fortunately the judge in district did set high bail. >> a judge ordered falcone held on ten thousands dollars -- then thousand dollars cash bail. authorities were called to shots fired just before cycle this morning. a man inside refused to leigh the house and then barricaded himself inside. police spent the night negotiating with him and he did eventually peacefully surrender. a five-week-old baby boy home alone in a hot apartment. the surprise visit may have saved his life. a juvenile probation officer was making an unannounced visit to a client in hyannis on a hot july day when she arrived she heard a baby crying and the windows were closed and the air conditioning unit was off. that's when she called 911 and first responders broke into the home. >> you know, sobbing and wailing, and i immediately just

and but i could feel how warm he was and he had two outpits on and some blankets over him. >> when the baby's mother returned home she was arrested for child endangerment. protection officials say there's been a spike in child abuse and neglect cases because of the opioid crisis. there were 661 cases in the county just last month. a week and a half of the murder of vanessa marcotte, police have received more than 800 tips on the case. princeton police have now turned marcotte was found dead half a mile from her mother's home hours after she didn't come back home from a run. police believe marcotte fought with her killer who they say would have bruises and scrapes. convicted mobster whitey bulger is hoping a supreme court will save him. bulger is appealing his conviction on murder and other charges. he lost a lower appeal last spring. so the u.s. supreme court is his last option. the chance of bulger's appeal

victims say, that's a good thing. >> i think it's a waste of time for the taxpayers. i think it's a lot of heartache and headache for the families to keep hearing about it. it's the only thing i admire about the guy, he has no quit in him. >> bulger's appeal centers around a claim that he should have been able to mention a supposed immunity deal from a federal prosecutor who died before the trial. new at noon, u.s. attorney carmoniz denial of a question to put an islamic cemetery on some unused farm land. he wants to see if the town violated the civil rights of the society. the group wants to use 55 acres of unused farmland for that cemetery. dudley says it plans to fully cooperate in the investigation. the massive blue cut fire in california has grown once again. it's moving quickly and now threatening homes outside of

nothing they've ever seen. carter evans reports. >> reporter: one look at the huge walls of flame in san bernadino county and the frustration of firefighters becomes clear. >> the biggest thing was we had to continually retreat against that advancing wall of fire. and that was something that i haven't witnessed in this section ever. >> we have strike teams here, our properties are life, property and infrastructure. and lives also include firefighters lives sflfrnl the fire raced here late wednesday that interest still endangering homes. on tuesday, the fire tore through neighborhoods in the with home and home after home going up in flames. it was only after smoke cleared wednesday that we could see the full extent of the devastation. the fire fight continued on the ground and from the air. this wildfire now stretches more than 17 miles.

. uber says it will start using self-drivingar streets of pittsburgh. each car will have a back-up driver inside. the program is expected to launch in the next few weeks. pittsburgh was likely chosen as the location because uber has a self-driving research center there. the ride-sharing app has just announced a partnership with volvo that will provide uber with their suvs. >> very cool. now to a wbz exclusive. foxboro police are looking for a driver who hit a young woman in the parking lot of patriot place and then took off.

weekend. the weather is good to go for all the outdoor activities. here we go. concert tonight. are you heading to fenway? 82 degrees, looks warm, looks nice. temperatures will gradually cool off into the upper 70s. let's talk a little bit more about the drought here. so here's the month of august. every green box is a day we've received rainfall in boston. but you notice the amounts on there? a trace on tuesday, little over we have .30 inch of an inch on saturday afternoon. it's been a really try month overall. we're over an inch below the average. the whole summer so far we have just over three inches of rain. so we need a big event to change things for us here -- us here. it was a real cool start to the movement the blue boxes representing cooler than normal days. we're going to add a few more red boxes here by the time the weekend is done and we could be on track for the warmest august

boston. some other above-average day today, 84 in boston. same in tau ton. mid-80s for manchester down to nashua. maybe 90s in a couple spots. 82 in mash field. 75 on nantucket. it looks beautiful. nantucket, by the way the only spot in southern new england that is not in a drought right now. in the meantime, any of the sprinkles from this morning, long gone. clear skies. we have a little weak disturbance to our north br those. it's a blend of sun and clouds. we gain a couple more degrees until 3:00 p.m. and then gradually cool back once that sun sets. maybe you're headed to gillette tonight, awesome forecast for the pats, too. mostly clear, pleasant, upper 70s. wind is not an issue for game time either. we'll drop back in the mid-70s by the fourth quarter. what about tomorrow? great end to the week. we will get a sea breeze at the

off the ocean. 85 to near 90 through the interior. so another hot one, but the humidity still in check tomorrow. pretty light and variable wind through the interior as well. 83 in plymouth. and a very similar day on cape cod. plenty of sunshine to end the week. let's take you through the hour by hour. tomorrow a few clouds may bubble up in the afternoon. that's about it. notice a little bit of green showing up. that may be overdone. i think we're dry tomorrow. saturday morning we start with early-morning clouds. maybe a touch of fog. there 1 or 2 storms possible. way north and west of boston. nothing to cancel plans over. that's an isolated threat. sunday we start with morning clouds. it looks like it will stick around for a good chunk of the day. we will get a threat for ate thunderstorm later on sunday -- a thunderstorm later on the afternoon. fiona has no change. moving to the west northwest has slowed down just a little bit.
