live from the channel 4 studios in boston, this is wbz this morning. >> good morning i am kate merrill. >> i am chris mckinnon. thanks for joining us. it's monday august 22 and we had a wild night of weather across massachusetts. parts of the state were under a tornado warning and there were lots of reports of dama hardest hit areas with a lot of trees and power lines down. >> similar scene in marlboro. roads are closed and trees are down and people find out they lost power we will look at damage in minute but first barry burbank has the latest. >> good morning. and good morning. nothing going on no warnings so everything is quiet and peaceful. we still have rain from the band which moved through here

severe thunderstorm warnings up in the present time. the wind is shifted to the northwest in boston and we are in the clear and we have dry air from the north and west and it's muggy southeastern massachusetts and still muggy here. but the humidity will be dropping today so it's going to turn out to be a really nice day the rain is ending over plymouth county and cape cod an we have plenty of sunshine to follow as the clouds break up and moves away and it will be 78 a breeze will pick up west northwest at 10 to 25 miles an hour and windy all afternoon at times up to 359 miles an hour and temperatures close to 08 with lots of sunshine and very cool weather coming up tonight. you will love the forecast for the week. traffic and weather together hi breana. >> reporter: a couple accidents before you get in the car wove a major accident out on 128 north in needham. multiple cars hit a disabled

disabled. we don't have a exact number of cars involved or if there's injuries but the traffic is backing up in this area. that's the red arrows so avoid this and we will keep you update on when the accident might clear and hawkington there's jackknifed truck on on ramp to the pike at 495 north at exit 22. you can't get on the pike get on 135 instead and catch the pike further down. >> thanks very much. and the storms the big story. damage in concord and marlboro. >> let's get to nicole jacobs who is live with the latest. get just getting updated from the fire chief i understand. >> reporter: absolutely. mema is here providing steat assistance for the community here. the fire chiefs seconds ago said they released a code red

residents because they are urging people to stay at home because so many roadways are blocked. not only by trees but power lines that are live. let's look at the damage behind mech the tree completely uprooted on hawthorne lane areach this is where we are seeing quite significant damage in this part of the community. i can also tell you according to the chief, many of the lines are live. at some point he says crews will shut off the power in reinstall poles and get things back in a safe manner for the communities and get the roadspassable. that's why they are encouraging people to stay at home if possible. i can tell you also in the 400 and 500 blocks of lexington road that's also an area where the chief says it's significant damage. again, we spoke with m-ema officials here letting us know they are here to provide

the chief calls this a second alarm level that they are dealing with here. exexpects that to go up -- he expects that to go up to a level three but right now they are assessing the damage and i can also tell you the national weather service is here assessing the damage because right now, according to the chief, they don't know if it was a microburst if it was some sort of tornadic activity but nonetheless they are assessing the storms that rolled through between 3 and 4:00 he said they were watching the alerts around 3:15 when they first came in. the tornado warnings. and shortly after that, that's when they got the first call of a tree down in this very area. so we will continue to keep you updated here from concord throughout the morning but that's the latest. nicole jacobs wbz this morning. >> thanks very much. this severe weather brought down trees and power lines west of boston. >> anna meiler is live in marlboro with a closer look at damage there.

the hardest hit areas after the early morning storms. we are on walker street right now which is closed down because a massive tree snapped in half and fell tearing down power lines with it. here's a closer look at the damage. police are making sure no one drives down the road and national grid is also on scene. they turn off the power on this street and some of the surrounding roads as well. there are 124 houses without power in all in maro says a severe thunderstorm moved across the area between 3 and 4:00 this morning. a neighbor tells me the wind and rain was so strong it shook his house and woke him up. and just to give you an idea of how much rain fell, the officer on scene says the small creek behind me rose about 3 feet this morning. there are also trees and power lines down on curtis avenue maple street framingham and dartmouth road. the national weather service

beth israel with serious injuries. now to a developing story in win chest they are morning. police and middlesex district attorney have investigating the death of a elderly woman. police responded to the home on edgewater place around 2 saturday afternoon. they say the woman was not response i have and taken to lahey clinic and pronounced dead. her name has not been released. police were investigating until about 11 last night. and new this morning, police in hooksett catch up with a escaped felon. andrew shea disare halfway house in manchester late last week. police and a special operations unit arrested shea at a home on andrea avenue in hooksett. he was in prison for felony armed robbery charges andfirearm possession. two young children are recovering after being pulled unresponsive from a lowell pool saturday during a backyard birthday party on freda lane a neighbor-- lane. a neighbor is a registered

>> checked the pulse and gave hear couple breaths and i did a few chest compression and went back to giving her breathing. the child began to breath and i what pulse and turned her on her side so anyone of the residuals left in the lungs came out and she was crying on the way on the stretcher. >> the two children a boy and a girl were both airlifted to hospitals in boston and they are expected to survive. as boston resumes contract talks with the teachers union this week there's a new os boston municipal research bureausays changes are needed to boost the call the of education. they are pushing to lengthen the school dare and suggest overhauling the school adeval -- evaluation and have merit increases. the talks begin tomorrow and the current contract end on august 31st. it could be the end of the road for toll booths on mass pike. today massdot will discuss plans to demolish the toll

electronic tolling system. the agency hopes to have the new system operating by october. they are being installed at more than a dozen locations and they will record tolls from drivers with ez pass transponders. vehicles without the transponders will be build after a picture is taken of the license plate and they will have to pay a surcharge. this morning's globe is raising privacy concerns about the electronic tolling. the new system will have a feature that can alert police transponders go through the tolls. state transportation officials tell the globe the feature will only be used for public safety emergencies. president obama is back at white house. the first family wrapped up the two week vacation to the vineyard. the president began the day with a hike with his wife and played golf. it's the final vineyard vacation while in office. now to campaign 2016 hillary clinton is celebrating some big strides in fund raising.

lines down here. they are working on those power lines in marlboro. we will have live report from anna meiler in a short time to tell us the situation there. >> and crews will be out surveying the damage. barry burbank has what busy morning and you were on early with possible tornado or tornado warning issued. >> when i got in around 2:30 i lock at band of rain and there was no lightning and man all of a sudden by 3, , tornado warnings went out and let's look at a review of the radar. the band of rain was coming along. that's where we could have had significant of perhaps tornado in the radar return here. watch as it moves towards marlboro so it has not been confirmed as a tornado by the national weather service. they will send a survey team out there this morning to examine that and determine

whether it was maybe a down burst or microburst but the signature suggest it was a tornado. we don't know yet. but it moves northeast near sudbury be and towards concord and you see a pretty good signature indicative of what is tornadic and billerica and to the north of wilmington and then it sort of the amount of rotation disappeared on the velocity scan and the national weather service and warning was discontinued or expired at 4 this morning the severe thunderstorm warning. but interestingly enough is there was no thunder or lightning with this. and that's rare and another rarity is happening this time of the day we haven't had one in the middle of the night since august of 2000. we had the revere tornado which was very bad two years ago at the end of july but that happened around 8 in the morning. it was nothing during middle of the night. so we have to go back to august 2000 and we have had heavier

multiple trees and power lines down and curtis avenue framingham and dartmouth and marlboro and over the concord we have reports of damage just one place here at alcott but there are other places where there's damage in concord. so we have been on dry spell here but did it come down intorrents in the cells going by. lawrence about an inch and beverly and boston had 9/10 of an inch. from the wbz 1.5 # in methuen. and james in barre had a inch. james in fitchburg 3/4 and a half inch from jack in lexington and so reeling coming down hard. a few isolated downpour on cape cod. dry air sweeps in here and the dew points will be dropping. the winds will pick up out of the west northwest. clouds will disappear. and we will have a few

lots of sunshine. and this is the beginning of several days of wonderful weather. if you are lucky enough to be on vacation this week it's going to be awesome when you see my 7-day accu-weather forecast. looking at temperatures in the upper 60s to some lower 70s. cools off in new york state a little to the 60s. 40s and 23450?s southern portions of --50s in southern portion of ontario. dew points dropped from near over 70 to 63 in boston. it's getting drier. 46 in those are the dew points that high temperatures around 80 degrees and at the beaches should be just fine. a gusty breeze today 10 to 20 with gusts to 25 or 30 perhaps. we have a high tide this afternoon at 3 and in the 7-day accu-weather forecast, a perfect wonderful week. lower 80s tomorrow after starting out in the upper 40s and lower 50s in the suburbs. 58 in boston and then it warms up to the upper 80s wednesday and thursday and friday and next chance of a couple showers

looks like it will be cooler this weekend. traffic and weather together good morning brianna -- brie one ooh. >> reporter: before you -- breana. >> reporter: there's been a big accident out on 128 north in needham. there was a disabled truck before exit 19. multiple cars hit the truck and are now disabled. we don't know how many cars are involved or if there are injuries but this is causing a lot of backups so avoid the area. out in hawkington a jackknifed truck on the ramp to the pike at 495 north the ramp has been closed down. you did get on 135 and catch the pike further down. one more accident on the expressway northbound in dorchester at the savein hillexit. it's 6:10. before theon police are -- boston police are investigating how a private party bus crashed into two pedestrians killing one. it happened on route 1a in east boston at 2 a.m. on sunday. police say it's unclear if the two people were attempting to

needed for party buss. >> until we find out the circumstances i am not going to jump to conclusions and say we have to mandate and regulate all the different buses. we will see what happens before we start to take a next step. >> the bus company can released a statement saying they are cooperating fully with the police department and it's the first time they have had an accident since starting the business back in 1999. training begins this week for the boston police department's body camera pilot program. 100 officers of all ages and s have been selected to participate. they were chosen after no officers volunteered to join the program. mayor walsh expects there will be no push back against wearing the cameras now officers have been assigned. >> you are not going to hear about large protests from them about wearing them i think it's really the unknown and uncertainty of what does at camera mean and what is it going to do and what happens now this week they will get an understanding of what the camera is all about. >> the 6 month program will

september. the mayor says they will evaluate the results and decide the future of police body cameras. a disturbing statistic from a school safety group. massachusetts has more hoax bomb threats in schools than any other state. the educators school safety network counted 135 fake threats at bay state schools in the last school year. state police say that count is probably low. officials say school threats are increasing nationwide and thro threats to reach multiple schools at once. police and schools say it's frustrating problem because responding to the threats uses up valuable resources. ahead this morning, the olympics coming to a close. >> two weeks of competition wrapped up last night with a closing ceremony. we will have one final look at the action. >> and looking to score a cheap flight this fall? the best time this week to

many of you probably slept through it but serious business in the weather department for sure. >> it was. a tornado warning went up by the national weather service they will car vat damage area to determine whether it was tornadic or a microburst or whatever. but anyway that's nothing to worry about now. no worries just rain going through to the cape and the band is moving offshore so we are in good shape as we have temperatures going down a little bit. still humid out this but the air mass is really going to dryu good this afternoon. we have -- substantially and feel so good this afternoon. we have temperatures up around 80 and humidity will be dropping. it will last several more days. traffic and weather together hi breana. >> reporter: there is accident and closures that you know about before geeing in the car. -- getting in the car a jackknifed truck on the ramp to the pike at 495 north at exit 22. this is from the westboro fire department. the ramp is closed down so get

little further down. on the maps there is bumper to bumper traffic back up on 128 north in needham a disabled truck before exit 19 at highland avenue. multiple cars hit it and they are disabled so avoid the area. one more accident on the expressway northbound in dorchester at the save n hill exit. >> thanks very much appreciate it. there are a lot of reports of storm damage coming in from concord and marlboro. >> emergency crews are busy in both towns. our crews are live areas team coverage. anna meiler has a closer look at the damage in marlboro but nicole jacobs is in concord. >> reporter: all of this happening under the cover of darkness. of course now we have day height you can really see the extent of the damage here on hawthorne lane. this large tree completely uprooted and fallen on the power lines here. an important update according to the chief many of the lines that are down throughout concord are live. so he is urging residents to

they get the roadways clear. if you have to be out on the road he certainly says to use caution. i want to get you to video right now of really large trees that have come down. all of this happened between the hours of 3 and 4 this morning around that time when we had the tornado warning. the fire chief says that they heard the warning as well and peedly got calls for trees down. they did implement what he calls a code red i was reverse 911 call for all residents letting them know of the weather situation here. we did speak with a homeowner that lives in this home where the tree was uprooted in the front yard just a short time ago and she says she was asleep when this happened and here's what she had to say when she heard the damage. >> i heard like lightning and crashing and i ran to the other side of the house and through the back and it had broken down the porch and all the trees were sort of falling and then i heard a big crash in the front

live look here at the large tree on hawthorne lane, completely on the power lines here. this is the type of damage we are seeing throughout concordhawthorne lane and electrickington road shut down because of this -- lexington road shut down because of this damage. we don't know as barry said if it was tornadic or if it was a microburst. but, nonetheless, the national weather service is here in the area to assess the damage as our emergency crews making that there are no further issues here. the good news no one is injured. the fire chief says no deaths as well. no damage to property he can september for just yard damage -- except for yard dang but no trees fell on homes to the point where the homes are unlibbable. so that's good news here. we will continue to keep you updated throughout the area as soon as we get more information. chris kate back to you.

against the telephone pole with extensive damage that you can see here from the videoch the driver was trance -- videoch the driver was trance -- video. the driver was trance for theed -- transported with serious injuries. a man is due in court accused of trying to stab a man to death. officers responded and found a victim with serious injuries. john sevier faces several charges including attempted murder and domestic assault and battery. the victim is in stable condition. also due in court, felon. police say 36-year-old james lyons stabbed a man outside jake and joe's restaurant early friday morning. the victim was found slashed in the neck and he was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. public headlight officials approved a first needle exchange program on the north shore. the gloucester based service agency north shore health project has been given the go- ahead for a program that will include counseling disease screening and nare cassidy try biewtion and needle exchange.

hopes to have it up and running by october. this morning's heavy rain may help ease the risk of bust fires. it will be a welcome change for fire fighters who battled a brush fire in west roxbury it was in the area of roxbury latten school and quarry it was in the huge but it was tough to put out. taking about 26 hours. >> the firefighters have to drag the hose hundreds of feet up hills and down hills and rocks you know and it's very labor intensive. >> no one was hurt and no homes were jeopardized. firefighters say an extended soaking rain is what is needed to lower the risk of the brush fires. strong winds led to two kayakers being rescued off castle island. one of the kayakers started to take on water and began to sink sunday afternoon. that's when a second man came over to try to bail the kayak out but it was too heavy and both ended up in the water in

for pets locked in cars. governor baker signed legislation that it will allow first responders to break into a vehicle if an animal's health is in danger. the bill allows any individual to enterer's car if the pet -- enter a car if a pet is in eminent danger. the formal signing ceremony is wednesday at the statehouse go burbank ymca pool going to the dogs before the greater boston ymca closes the pool for the year they allow local dogs to hop in and practice doggy paddle. th at least 65 pups played in the water. owners are asked to give $25 donation to gog towards the annual fund. this is the second year for the event. i imagine that helps get the extra chlorine needed after that. >> probably true. imagine dropping in a net in the sea and reeling in a cool,000 bucks it's reality. state's marine fisheries and atlantic lobstermans association are tagging jonah crabs to learn more about the migration habits.

because there's so much tree and power line damage and a lot of roads are closed. >> what makes this so scary barry is this happened while most people were sleeping and had no idea that a tornado warning was overhead. >> exactly and actually no warning because it was no thunder and lightning to wake some people up about this situation. as well so, here's what we had radar signature of this storm along this morning around 2:30 to 3 between westboro and maro there's a signature on the radar return that would be a clue that this may be tore natick but has not been confirmed by -- tored in a he can but has not been confirmed by the national weather service. but it looked suspicious where the damage occurred and sort of the rotation signature on that weakened and we had no more worries from that storm. there was virtually no thunder or height ening which is most unusual.

england haven't what tornado warning since august of 2000 so we had the damage in marlboro multiple trees down and power line and curtis avenue church street framingham and dartmouth road. the cell moved northeastward and tracked about like this so there's scattered damage along there between marlboro and concord and stress down at leaston alcott and more. they will survey to see if it was a microburst where the trees are down ball certain direction or there's signature of rotation where the trees are all over the place which may have been a result of a tornadic activity. so the national weather service have have-- will have an assessment later on today. look at the rainfall alities. up to an -- amounts. up to ionch. and tewksbury doug says 1.61 ed in charleston 1.52.

karen a half inch and bellingham from stephen a half ench so -- inch so hf yes -- heavy downpours. the rain is ending on cape cod right now lighter rain down there as the front goes away there it goes say bye and it's offshore and we have a lot of beautiful weather to follow. but clouds going to part and disappear. the sun will come out and the air will dry out and the winds will pick up. 10 to 15 miles an hour to the west northwest but we have a shot of summer polar air coming in and it's going to cool tonight. notice the difference upper 60s now and we have got cool air waiting in the wings ready to come on in and strike us tonight. and refreshing night tough reach for a blanket. these are the dew points which have been dropping haven't dropped off sharply yet but gradually drops off as the day goes along dew points in the 50s and in the 40s later today and tomorrow. that's what we are looking at as we are highs near slightly under the 80s to the north and west. and we have got a good beach

around 80 and high tide coming up at 3 this afternoon. there is looks to be a tropical depression way out in the atlantic and this is probably going to be tropical storm guston and go out in the atlantic but right now it's way out in the atlantic and not a bother to us. we will watch that closely as we have beautiful weather. if you are on vacation you have to be lucky. going through the upper 80s wednesday and thursday and friday and cooler at coastal spots. next chance of a shower come on in breana. >> reporter: it's rough commute this morning. we have accidents to tell you about in hawkington there is a jackknifed truck on the on-ramp to the pike. this is at 495 north at exit 22 and the ramp is closed down there. there is backup on 128 north in needham a disabled truck before exit 19 at highland avenue. multiple cars hit the truck and they are disabled. this is 93 south an accident on the expressway northbound
