to this arrest. let's listen to the commissioner. >> with that being said again i just want to again stress the great work of my investigators behind me who again, since this crime was reported, were working around the clock to get this dangerous guy off the streets. with that i'll take questions. >> can you be more specific? >> he had served time from what i understand for a similar offense and he prison in december. he was on a gps bracelet from all the information we have. he cut that bracelet off. and that's why we weren't able to locate him as quickly as we wanted to. but we were onto about 15 houses over the last 16 hours looking for him. and we had everyone looking and

this afternoon. >> between the gps bracelet that was in the area at the time as well as the victim coming forward and identifying him after the crime, that's how we know we have who is responsible. that's part of the investigation. it's very active and very young but i'm happy that we got him. >> we just got him. th investigation. [ indiscernible question ] >> he walked almost a half mile to where the assault happened? >> again, i don't want to get into the specifics. but he said i'm sure he threatened her with harm and i'm sure he led her to an area. but i don't want to get into the particulars of it. i'm just happy we got who is

and that's part of this. again, an arraignment tomorrow. and i want to thank the district attorney's office. they were instrumental in helping us. and i'm sure a lot of details will come out at the arraignment. >> i can't comment. that's something you'll have to get from his parole. >> i'm sure thank her for having the courage to work with us to get a dangerous felony off the street. as far as the charges go, this individual will be charged with aggravated rape. he's going to be charged with aggravated kidnapping. indecent a and b. intimidation of a witness as well as armed robbery. so he's going to be facing some very serious charges.

the victim. that shouldn't happen in our city. but i'm happy we were able to get him very quickly. >> you said that you had an idea -- >> that's part of the investigation. we're not sure on that. >> was he arrested at the homeless shelter? >> he was on the street. not tied to the shelter. he was spotted down in that area. and we were looking in the south end in dorchester. he had a lot of addresses out there. but we were hitting them all night. and through the hard work of the officers behind me, we were able to get him today at 3:30. >> just given the area where he was found -- >> he's been in jail for some time, released in december. i don't want to say there's any addiction.

truth. >> thank you. >> police commissioner -- talking about the arrest after this vicious sexual assault at 1:00 in the morning in the south end where a woman at knife point was brought to a local park where she was raped. >> this happening at the carter playground in the south end. the commissioner saying that the suspect in this case had a gps monitoring bracelet. he was just released from yale in december. and he had cut the right before this happened. the bracelet was going off in the area of the assault. putting that together with what the victim said -- the commissioner mentioning she was very brave. >> multiple charges to come. >> and an autographed patriots helmet stolen from a restaurant. the bold crime pulled off when the bartender stepped away.

a couple returned home from their daughter's wedding to discover a lightning strike destroyed their house. and tonight they're doing all they can to pick up the pieces. >> as paul burton shows us, they're getting a lot of help from the community. >> it's a big loss. it's everything we own. it's upsetting. >> reporter: they stare in disbelief at what used to be the home. >> the kitchen cabinets, the >> reporter: it's all gone along with all their memories. as the two were celebrating their proudest moment, they had to face the nightmare the next morning. the house caught fire after lightning struck the home. nothing left but a charred dryer and refrigerator. >> we've lost all the documentation of our children and our lives.

she was sitting in her yard and noticed she had company, a mother bear and three cubs. she ran in and grabbed her camera. but the bears hung out for nearly a half hour. climbing the trees, checking out the rope swing. >> first reaction, fear. mother bear took a bird feeder and sat on the edge of the property eating. >> experts say bear sightings are on the rise because the berry season has been slow. that has forced the bears to look for food elsewhere. and it always comes back to the weather. the berries are struggling because of the weather. >> the drought. and this year we had a couple of cold snaps. we've had a number of things conspiring against plant life. we had that cold day valentine's day weekend and

april. and the gypsy moth and now the drought. >> what do you get? hungry bears. >> prowling the neighborhoods. >> we've come full circle. >> let's take a look at what to expect going forward? >> we'll be near 90 on thursday and friday to end the week. and we have a couple of shower chances friday and in particular monday i think will be the best chance. and the tropics are getting active. we're watching gaston and at tonight it's all about a beautiful evening. 70s to around 80 degrees. a pleasant, dry day and lots of sunshine all across the northeast. anywhere from green bay to boston. every city is within a couple of degrees of 80. and a lot of sunshine to go around. the next weather system arrives thursday night to friday. in the meantime, dew points in the 40s. another great sleeping night.

clear air. and temperatures in the low to middle 50s. and the city in the low 60s. so a little bit warmer than last night but comfortable and a bit cool when you wake up. sunny morning, beautiful day, and warmer than what we saw this afternoon. the southwesterly breeze and temperatures rising above 80 by lunchtime. and well into the 80s as we head to tomorrow afternoon. the sunset is 7:31 and the humidity is low it won't be very muggy. 89 in boston tomorrow. and manchester 88 degrees. and new bedford, 84. the average high is 79 degrees this time of year. and a good day to head to the beach. 80 to 85 at the shore. and the southwest wind at 16 to 18 miles per hour. the wind -- a touch more humid. and then we'll see the showers to the west.

the day. a slight chance of an overnight shower and then a couple of pop- up showers and storms. not expecting a lot of rainfall. it will be warm and humid etch though we're expecting isolated showers. high pressure builds back in and tons of sunshine and warm temperatures. a great couple of days to be outdoors. the average high is 79 in boston this time of the way through the upcoming weekend. we have country fest friday night. and any storms would likely be over. warm and humid for chesney and miranda lambert. and we're looking at 84 degrees. one of my personal favorites the st. anthony's feast going on this weekend. 85 on saturday, a sea breeze on sunday. a high near 80.

comfortable. as we look to next week, a chance for showers and storms on monday. and then drying back out on tuesday. not many rain chances for us. continues to be the story. we're watching the tropics. a lot of people are asking if that could bring us rainfall. quite a ways off. tonight new concerns about concussions and kids when it comes to head injuries. practice may be more dangerous for young football players than the actual games. researchers discovered that 70% of football players ages nine to 11 experienced hits to the head. the coaches should consider reducing the time spent on practice drills and focus on the fundamentals of football. five confirms cases of zika in miami.

it was probably transmitted through miami. when you put on the sunscreen for the beach. some of them smell like coconut. would you want one that smells like fast food. kentucky fried chicken is giving away free bottles of their sunscreen that smells of fried chicken and it appears to be popular. the company created a website where you can order your own bottle which is stock. i wonder if they're worried about horseflies. >> you want to smell like a roasting chicken? >> i guess so. today's special event making sure that local kids in need get the right start for the school year. and a dangerous crash caught on camera. police say the driver was drunk when he crashed into a work zone. and we continue to follow

four hundred million dollars. that's how much charter schools will drain from massachusetts public schools this year. four hundred million siphoned from local districts that desperately need it. four hundred million that won't fund more science and technology, arts or preschool, counseling, or smaller class sizes. four hundred million unavailable to the ninety-six percent of students who don't attend charter schools. let's improve public schools for all students, not just a select few.

this is the man they say approached a woman while he was on a bicycle in the south end early monday morning around 1 a.m. he told the woman he was armed with a knife and forced her to walk a half mile to carter playground on columbus avenue where he sexually assaulted her. and this is what the boston police commissioner -- >> he had served time from what i understand for a similar offense and he prison in december. he was on a gps bracelet from all the information we have. he cut that bracelet off. and that's why we weren't able to locate him as quickly as we wanted to. we were on to about 15 houses over the last 16 hours looking for him. and we had everyone possible looking and i'm happy to say we got him this afternoon.

the community this morning about this crime. it had women in particular on edge in the south end in that neighborhood and now this arrest about a day and a half after the assault happened sure to bring some relief. the suspect is a convicted rapist who served time in prison on a similar crime. he was wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet that police say he cut off after this assault. they were able to trace where he had been and they were able to track him down. and that's the latest from boston police headquarters. christina hager, wbz news, breaking at 6:00. a worker takes a terrifying fall in roxbury, tumbling off scaffolding. this happened at about 2:00 this afternoon. the boston fire tells us the man is in serious condition. a man was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries
