now at 11:00, a woman raped at a boston playground. what investigators used to track down the attacker. a woman finds a wanted man hiding under her bed. how he snuck inside. and no jail time for a teen athlete accused of raping class mates at a wild party, and the victim may have helped him to go free. live from the channel 4 studios in boston, this news at 11:00. an arrest in a violent attack in boston. police say they've caught the man who raped a woman at a playground. and investigators tell us it wasn't the first time he's attacked a woman. >> we go right to julie loncich live in the south end tonight with neighbors are relieved this person is off the street. >> reporter: they certainly are, david. this woman according to police was forcibly kidnapped here,

the road, and then she was raped by a suspect wearing a gps bracelet. >> we just want to thank her very much for having the courage to step forward and work with us to get this dangerous felon off the streets. >> reporter: police say the victim was instrumental in helping the police track down the accused attacker. officers arrested the 31-year- old rodriguez near a homeless shelter less than 48 hours after they say he kidnapped and >> i hope someone would have noticed something. i have a daughter that's 23, so when she's coming home from work late at night it makes me nervous. >> reporter: investigators say it was 1:00 a.m. monday when the victim walking near the park was approached by rodriguez on a bike and forced to walk a half a mile to carter playground where she was attacked. >> he cut the bracelet off, and that's why we weren't able to locate him as quick as we

of an 8 to 10 year sentence before he was released last december with a gps monitoring device. this section of the south end is heavily traveled, even after dark, and advocates with the rape crisis center says we should all look out for everybody. >> you can check in with someone after the fact, get the police involved, say are you okay. >> reporter: rodriguez faces charges aggravated kidnapping among others. he'll be arraigned tomorrow. julie loncich, wbz news. paula, back to you. we're following breaking news coming into the news room right now. a strong earthquake rattled central italy. it measured 6.2 and felt as far south as rome where buildings shook for 20 seconds. it's 4:00 a.m.

at the epicenter. no word of injuries, but there have been strong aftershocks. we'll stay on top of it and bring the latest. and a mid-air emergency forcing the pilot of this small plane to land in the middle of the reservoir on a sand bar because of drought conditions. he reported engine trouble. the pilot not injured, and water levels so low because of the drought, that may have exposed the sand bar, the pilot a spot to safely land. tonight state police are trying to figure out how to get it back out of the reservoir. a man in the in the with serious injuries after being hit by a tree branch. a tree cutting crew was working on it, and a woman near said she asked the landscaping company why the area wasn't roped off better. >> they were telling me they

use to you know prevent the people. >> police say the victim's a 29- year-old man that did have to have surgery. workers say their hearts go out to the man and his family. >> 911 what's the emergency? >> there's somebody in our house. a mother finds a shirtless stranger under her bed. the man snuck into the home through the back door and chose a hiding spot even police once, but when the family looked again they found a foot sticking out from under the bed. wbz is live in brook line with the calls for help. >> reporter: and david, those frantic calls to police here is not something police are used to. the family says the man was hiding under the bed for at least an hour. >> 911 what's your emergency?

the beds. >> okay. >> in our house. >> reporter: it's a call dispatchers don't normally get. >> he's been in the house for an hour under the bed. >> reporter: jeffery lived her for two decades, and his wife and two adult children were home when they found him hiding under the bed. >> there was a lot of stuff under the bed, how did he get under there i said? she was skinny. >> reporter: he was wanted for allegedly stealing packages from they searched multiple houses, including this one to find him. >> my son was home the first time when the police came. he came upstairs from the basement, and they were there with their guns, and then the police left, my wife and daughter came home an hour later and think came into the room and she saw the foot under the bed. >> reporter: then he says his wife screamed and yelled at him to get out. >> he ran past the family and

there's outrage tonight, a local teen athlete accused of raping two class mates in central massachusetts will not be spending any time behind bars. the 18-year-old basketball player was sentenced to probation instead. >> lma satellite center now with the story, and a lot of people say the sentence just wasn't enough. >> and that's the source of the outrage tonight. the star athlete is accused of assaulting the teens at an alcohol-fueled party last spring. one of those victims wrote a note telling the judge she didn't feel jail time was necessary. >> reporter: according to court documents in the case, 18-year- old david becker assaulted two unconscious females at a friend's house party in april.

and fell asleep in an up stairs bedroom. later that morning, victim number one said she awoke to find her pants and underwear down to her thighs, and told police at no time did she consent to david touching her. victim number two told police david assaulted her too that night. the next day victim number one says becker texted her, just wanted you to know that i'm really sorry. she replied don't worry about it, it's all good. she didn't know what else to say. becker was charged with top counts of rape, and -- two counts of rape, and faced two years in prison. but the judge sentenced him to two years probation. no jail time. his attorney defended the sentence saying we all make mistakes at 17, 18, 19 years old, and shouldn't be branded for life as a sex offender, but the judge's decision was widely

will be the cooler spot. but a great beach day, and we're going to have a lot of beach days yet to come as we end august and even into the month of september. wind out of the southwest at 6 to 18 tomorrow, and a few good days to be headed toward the shore. thursday 82, and friday a humid day around 84. any showers or storms will probably fall apart before reaching the cape and islands friday. and southwest winds make us humid air will be here on friday ahead of cold front. not expecting a lot of widespread activity with this. i think it's a slight chance of a shower or stormment otherwise just a warm, humid day. behind it high pressure stretching out. more sunshine and warm temperatures for us. 80s saturday and sunday, and no concerns if you have outdoor plans. the only which is of rain fall here is -- chance of rain fall here is thursday night into
