pictures coming into the newsroom show a tremendous amount of devastation with buildings completely leveled homes crumbled while people were in the beds asleep. they are dealing with aftershocks as well. some reportedly coming in as strong as 5.1. rescue crews have moved in as you see with the live pictures here. there is a desperate attempt to find survivors in all of the rubble. they are using bulldozers buckets and their hands and anything they can hands onto free the victims. reports have been -- of families trapped in the debris and we are sure to hear more stories like this come in as crews continue the search. death toll right now acoring to cnn is at least 21 people. officials with the state department of travel are asking u.s. citizens who are safe to check in with family via social media. again, the rescue efforts as you just saw remain underway

updated with this breaking news. in the satellite center nicole jacobs wbz this morning. also breaking north korea fired a missile into the sea. south korean official say the missile was fired from a submarine this morning and flew about 310 miles. that's the longest flight by that type of weapon and it puts it in range of hitting much of south korea. the launch happened as south korea and the u.s. are conducting the annual military drills. at least one person flown to the hospital after around 10 last night. part of the area was shut down for a while while police investigated. a convicted sex offender is due in court accused of raping a woman at a boston playground. >> and that victim is being credited with helping police track that suspect down. anna meiler is live with more for us. anna. >> reporter: chris eduardo rodriguez will be arraign merchandise roxbury and boston police are thanking the victim for helping get a violent felon

investigators say he cut off the gps monitoring device he was wearing as part of the probation. police say rodriguez approached his victim on a bicycle in the south end early monday morning. they say he told her he had a knife and assaulted her at a nearby playground. a brookline family finds a man wanted by police hiding under their bed. jeffrey benson says his wife and two adult kid were inside the stearns road home when they found the suspect. brookline police wanted to talk to 27-year-old harry as pack -- castillo-pujols about a series of packages that disappeared and they searched several houses. >> my son was home first time when the police came. he came upstairs from the basement and they were there with the gun and then the police left and my wife and daughter came home a hour later and that's when they came to that room and she saw a foot under the bed. >> benson says his wife screamed and the man took off. police arrested him in mission hill and he is charged with

breaking and entering, larceny and receiving stolen property. stanford is proposing an alcohol ban on campus. it comes after a rape case involving a student made national headlines. this morning our jon keller explains why the ban does not get to the root of the problem. >> reporter: good morning. every devoted parent listening to me knows it's true. you have the power to control the behavior in your home by establishing and enforcing rules and a culture. if only some prominent institutions could learn the same fundamentallesson. remember the scandal at stanford war young woman was raped -- where a young woman was raped while on conscious and the criminal's behavior can't be brimmed on drinking alone and prompted a reassessment by stanford or the alcohol policies resulting in a laying ban on hard liquor at on campus parties and limits on

the dorms as if that would even slow down stanford's binge drinking problems. i seen this process in action before. right here in our local college official handling of student alcohol abuse prompted by a horrendous incident yields token gestures that does little to solve the problem. why? a poll of students found 91% were opposed to any hard alcohol ban. gh they tried too hard to create a safe culture. parents know they only have a few years to raise responsible kids before a booze peddling pop culture and pressure takes charge once they leave the nest it's up to institution schools and workplace to reenforce boundaries and demand that limits be respected. some will do it, others never will.
