lofted. kokomo is just to the north of indianapolis. you can see the storms scattered about. and the red boxes are current tornado warnings. these are actual sightings of tornadoes around the indianapolis area. kokomo to the north at 3:32 in the afternoon. and also a reported tornado off to the west of indianapolis. that crossed through the city and no reports of a tornado on the ground in the city of they'll remain under a tornado watch until 9:00 this evening across indiana and western ohio. the same storm system will be moving our way for thursday night to friday. not widespread severe weather but a chance for some storms, much needed rainfall and a lot of heat ahead of it. also breaking an attack at the american university in kabul, afghanistan.

injured. liam martin has the latest. >> reporter: this is believed to be an attack carried out by islamic militants. they heard a loud explosion 7:30 local time. and some students barricaded themselves in the classrooms using chairs and deskings. a prize winning photographer sent a tweet saying we are stuck inside the american shooting followed by explosion. this may be my last tweet. he did end up escaping safely but one person did not. the u.s. state department is working to determine if any americans were injured or killed. >> we condemn this attack. an attack on a university is an attack on the future of afghanistan. >> reporter: this comes after two staff members were abducted. one is an american and neither

point. the u.s. state department in light of that attack and this attack warning americans to stay away from afghanistan's capital city. >> police say this is the face of the man who instilled fear in the south end. he held a woman at knife point and raped her. he is behind bars now, on a he attacked the woman months after being released from prison. >> reporter: certainly a lot of relief in this bustling neighborhood. but this case shines a light on a legal loophole that allowed this convicted rapist to avoid having his name publicly posted on the sex offender registry.

looks like tonight. tina kraus is in italy where search teams are looking for survivors. >> reporter: the powerful earthquake shook people out of their beds in the middle of the night across central italy. the quake flattened much of the town north of rome. they are digging through mountains of debris where homes once stood. an emergency worker tried to calm rubble. she appeared badly injured with her face barely visible. so far, there have been dozens of powerful aftershocks and people are afraid to go indoor. being the warmest august in the city of boston going back to 1872. it's 78 degrees and just outside of the water, temperatures in the 80s. humidity is not a big factor but it's starting to climb and will continue to climb. the next storm system. we talked about the tornadoes that touched down. we're not expecting widespread weather. as for tonight, mainly clear been. we'll be in the 60s across much of the region. it's a warm start and will be a warm day for us. the good news is we have a strong southwesterly breeze at 10 to 20 by lunchtime. it's a hot day and a little bit more muggy. and we'll have the breeze to cool us off. and many towns will make a run to 90. 89 in boston and bedford. 91 in lawrence. and manchester up to 90 degrees. and the southwest winds

bit. and 76 in nantucket. yes, another beach day. 80 to 87 degrees. and with the winds we get choppy on the boats, especially tomorrow afternoon. in terms of humidity, muggy tomorrow and dew points in the low 60s. we'll really feel it tomorrow night and friday. that's when dew points get close to 70. it will start to get more uncomfortable towards the tail end of the we approaching front. anything tomorrow is going to dissipate as it tracks eastward. friday, the front will move across the region and this is coming down to timing. where is it going to set up in the peak heating of the afternoon. that's where we have the best chance for a few showers and storms. and maybe we can get a little bit of rainfall out of this as the front moves offshore. high pressure builds in this weekend. lots of sunshine.

live from the channel 4 studios in boston, this is wbz news at 5:00. and now at 5:30, the drought is so bad in some areas that officials are asking residents to limit their showers. and there's no substantial rain in sight. the extreme drought conditions hitting scituate very hard. >> water restrictions are getting tighter by the day. >> reporter: this is one of the reservoirs that supplies about a third of the town's water. you can see stumps and boulders and grass growing in the mud. >> ever seen a summer like this one? >> i never have. we moved here in the late '60s and it's never been like this. >> reporter: the town's
