salem police putting out a video. a group of people put an unknown explosive device inside a newspaper box. the blasts could be felt a mile away. and the box belongs to the rainbow times. that's a newspaper for the lgbt community. if you have information on the incident contact the police. this is the man behind a violent attack in the south forcing a woman at knife point to walk to a location where she would be sexually assaulted. eduardo rodriguez is no stranger to the law. >> he's been convicted of sex crimes in the past. but because of a loophole. you wouldn't find him on the sex offender registry. christina hager has the details. >> reporter: certainly some relief in this bustling

but some say the case has exposed a problem with the state sex offender registry. those closest to eduardo rodriguez say he was able to hide his dangerous past from them. >> reporter: even though eduardo rodriguez spent nine years in prison. he was not on the sex offender registry list. and now back in court, hiding from view, and se the same thing this week -- his former girlfriend says -- >> if i knew all of this i would have never ever been with him. >> he's accused of threatening to cut a woman's throat. forcing her to walk to a spot behind these bleachers where he

the most serious offenders removed from the sex offender registry list in january while each gets a hearing to determine if the serious enough to put the name back up. >> i look at that all the time because of the area i live in. if i would have seen his face, i would have never dated him at all. i feel bad for the female and it just woke me up. >> right to know if rodriguez or any rapist is nearby. >> take that information away from them -- it puts us in danger in our communities, our families, our children. >> reporter: a spokesperson with the department of public safety says the sex offender registry board has hired more officers to move the cases through and get the names back

paula, back to you. and we continue to follow breaking news out of indiana where a tornado caused extensive damage in kokomo. and we're hearing that another tornado may be headed there right now. we want to get right to eric fisher. incredible pictures. >> several storms all rotating in indiana. and reports of different tornadoes there. one came through indianapolis and the tornado lifted when it wentst we've been watching the storms north of indianapolis. this tornado warning is for kokomo. the north side of town will be struck by one tornado. and this is likely another one that's going to move in the next couple of minutes. and these are north of indianapolis. same system comes to us thursday night. and not expecting severe weather. we'll talk about the local

developing stories overseas. the first a devastating earthquake in central italy. the death toll has just increased again. at least 159 people are dead. and 368 more are injured. the magnitude 6.2 earthquake caused homes and buildings to collapse. and the town of amatrice is one of the hardest hit. there's some good news. an 8-year-old girl out of the rubble alive. the earthquake is thousands of miles away. >> for boston's tight knit community, it's hitting too close to home. >> reporter: in boston's north end, locals were glued to an italian news station seeing the devastation. and on social media. he was trying to keep his family informed about what was

quake stricken area. >> they are good. some of them will sleep in the car for a few nights. i asked the everything okay -- yes. >> reporter: she reached her brother in rome who felt the tremor 80 miles away. so did the basketball team touring -- experiencing something they never felt before in their hotel. >> i go to my the hangers were clacking against each other. and it was a really bizarre sound. >> the small tourist town was destroyed with rescue crews using bulldozers and bare hands. and in the north end neighborhood. the effort to reach loved ones continues. >> especially in an italian

reportedly killed and two dozen others were injured. witnesses heard a loud explosion and automatic gunfire on the campus at about 7:30 local time. scary moments for young people in mendon. they were on the way to camp and their bus collided with a car. paramedics airlifted the driver of the car to the hospital. none of the children we some of the kids in the back landed on top of each other. it happened so quickly. >> reporter: parents came to pick up some of the children and most of them continued on to champ after another bus arrived. a football helmet stolen from a restaurant is back where it belongs. the helmet was mailed back to them with a card containing a written apology and enough

you can put many of the back bay's historic buildings on the list of things affected by the drought. they are supported by woodpilings underground. and when ground water levels drop -- which is happening now -- the pilings are exposed to the air and that causes them to rot. the head of the boston ground water trust says that water levels are very low but it would take years drought before a piling would rot and cause potential damage to buildings. the only fix for the problem is a lot of rain. >> and in copley square, they cut off the wood but they have to add steel. >> this is one of my favorite tidbits about the city of

down pine trees and thousands of them are under the city of boston and they have to stay wet. the water keeps away the bacteria that eats the wood. and do we have rain in the forecast? not much. and the drought is hyper local. we'll get an update to this tomorrow morning. i don't think it will change a lot. most of the area seeing a half inch to an inch of rain. if anything, it should improve in connecticut where they've had the around boston and in northeast mass and southeastern new hampshire. that's where we've had the most difficulty gets the showers and storms to survive. if any showers fall over the next week, we won't have the driest summer on record. the chance of showers thursday and friday. and that's about it. there are not that many opportunities before september comes around.

next couple of days. we'll make a run at 90 for thursday and friday. and that's ahead of this next storm system which is producing the tornadoes in indiana. by the time it gets to us a couple of showers and maybe a thunderstorm and that will be it for tonight, mainly clear skies and milder than the last couple of evenings. temps will hold in the 60s. tomorrow morning, a warm start and we quickly jump to the 80s. warm and a le and breezier out of the southwest at 10 to 20. and taking an edge off the heat. and clouds increase into tomorrow afternoon and we'll have the breeze with us. highs tomorrow, upper 80s to lower 90s. cooler on the south coast, the cape, the islands with the south wind coming off the water. it's a tradeoff. looking at the beach forecast. 80 to 87. the brightest skies first after of the day.

evening. tomorrow east dew points in the 60s. and tomorrow night and friday, approaching 70. and with some of that humidity, a chance for a little bit of rain. tomorrow night and friday morning we could see a couple of overnight showers and another round heading into friday afternoon as the front moves east. the question of whether we can get enough instability to see showers and storms, i'm not expecting anything too widespread. the front moves offshore. build in and weekend forecast -- this about says it all. 80s, sunshine, less humidity. great couple of days to be outside. we might get an isolated storm on monday. cooling for tuesday and wednesday. and david and paula as we track the tropics, any rain that might get to us wouldn't be until late next week. breaking news out of washington state. this is an incredible picture

maintenance facility. you can see about a dozen buses have been burned out completely. the good news is that no one has been hurt. the school district does not start school until september 6th. at least three rows of school buses destroyed. >> out of control. we'll follow that and the patriots are two days away from the third preseason game of the summer. the game opener. steve burton is here. >> we all know tom brady wants to play against the panthers, but the main goal is to get jimmy garoppolo ready for the season openers. >> last week jimmy garoppolo didn't know he was starting until an hour before kickoff due to a tom brady thumb.

four hundred million dollars. that's how much charter schools will drain from massachusetts public schools this year. that desperately need it. four hundred million that won't fund more science and technology, arts or preschool, counseling, or smaller class sizes. four hundred million unavailable to the ninety-six percent of students who don't attend charter schools. let's improve public schools for all students, not just a select few.
