jumped in to help him. wbz's katie brace is live with a pretty incredible survival story. >> reporter: it is. they just pulled out the chopper and the pilot says he knew he had a problem. he made it to the reservoir and then dropped 30 feet. he was walking within minutes thanks to a nearby family. >> reporter: the helicopter emerged from hours after it went under. his wife teared up. [ indiscernible ] dropped it in the water. >> reporter: it crashed into the water wednesday afternoon. a boater and his kids fished him from the reservoir. >> i put it in reverse and went over there and he popped up out of the water.

thank god. >> for whatever reason we got here late, i am glad because there was nobody else around. there were people in tubes far out but nobody that could have got to him. >> reporter: first responders arrived in 10 minutes by then it was under the surface. he was walking around on shore with no injuries. >> very lucky. >> reporter: he has flown every day for the past year and a half. this is one of his youtube videos. he took off flew over his house as he usually does but he lost power. if he had a field he could have saved the helicopter. >> unfortunately this was the only place. >> reporter: even though it is called the ashland reservoir it is not a drinking water source and no fuel spilled out either.

it as well. katie brace, wbz news. >> thank you. also tonight new video shows a helicopter moving an airplane that made an emergency landing yesterday on a sand bar in the reservoir. water levels there are so low because of the drought, the plane came down for an emergency landing on the sand bar. the pilot was not hurt. he was having mechanical issues. >> reporter: violence, storms, striking the mid-west, image to one tornado leveled a starbucks in indiana. and a person inside at the time captured the terrifying moments. wbz's liam martin is standing by, the storms came out of nowhere. >> reporter: absolutely. multiple tornadoes reported in indiana. 40 miles north of indianapolis. a dozen people have minor injuries, including a five-

the warning and got to safety. >> reporter: one of the twisters caught on camera by storm chaser left behind a path of destruction. destroying homes, ripping apart farms, wrecking vehicles. people in the area were beyond frightened as the storms passed through the area on wednesday. >> i got out, called 911. go somewhere safe. i tried to push the door and the wind never seen it like this. i shut the door and blew my window out and then that was it. i ran down stairs. i was so scared. >> reporter: mike pence, the governor of indiana, returned to his home state to get a look at the damage and offer support to the people effected. >> our hearts go out to the vales of the communities -- families of the communities effected, the homes and the business affected.

the area like this one caught on cell phone video. the tornadoes even destroyed this starbucks. officials have declared a state of emergency for the city and for howard county after severe weather people will never forget. the tornadoes also cut power to towns of -- thousands of people in the area many who remain without it tonight. >> all right. thank you very much. meteorologist eric fisher, this number of tornadoes this time of year >> this was a tornado outbreak in indiana and ohio. in august, any activity tends to go to the high plains or cudu. you -- canada. you don't see this many tornado report. so far 30 reports of tornadoes. they will find out how many touched down but the bigger tornado days are with hurricanes or tropical storms. thankfully the storms are weakening tonight.

right now there are no american casualties. investigators have revealed the officers who shot and killed a terror suspect were acting in self-defense. it shows him before he pulled out a knife and charged at officers but the family is questioning the investigation. wbz's louisa moller is live with that story. >> reporter: the da officers approached him because they had a duty to stop him before he could act on a isis inspired plot. the family questions why they didn't have a warrant. >> use of deadly force was a lawful exercise of self- defense. >> reporter: the district attorney announcing wednesday no charges will be sought against the police detective and fbi when he just shot and killed a man in june 2015.
