pick up just ever so slightly as we track our next system that will bring a few showers in tonight into tomorrow. for today it's going to stay dry. we're off to a dry start. 69 degrees in boston. 68 in taunton. we're running warmer in all spots compared to yesterday. hour-by-hour forecast, you see we have a thin veil of clouds in place this morning. but throughout this afternoon, we'll have a few passing clouds. otherwe southwest wind helping to boost temperatures to near 90 degrees by 2:30 we back off a little bit. with a chance of a stray shower to the north and west of us and mainly in western massachusetts. our main system still off to our west where we will see some scattered showers and thunderstorms and some brief heavy downpours. i'll have that hour-by-hour timing. >> thank you. we're following two breaking stories overnight. first a shooting in dorchester.

hospital with life-threatening injuries. police were called to mcclellan street at 1:00 a.m. right across from the golf course. the investigation then moved just a few blocks away to page street. the victim was found inside a home there. police are now investigating. emergency crews were also checking out a dog at that scene. we're hearing the dog may have been hit as well. it had a bandage on one of its legs. that dog is now with police. breaking news right now in lawrence. crews battling a big fire on summer street. it has now spread four homes. the red cross says 25 to 35 people are displaced this morning. no injuries have been reported. police are telling people to avoid the area. we have a crew at the scene. we'll bring you an update coming up. also breaking overnight, 247 people now confirmed dead in the earthquake that hit three downs in central italy. last night a 10-year-old girl was pulled from the rubble. right now crews are using

to try and reach any remaining survivors. you see live video right now. one of the collapsed buildings is a hotel believed to have 70 guests in it. the region is a summer hotspot for i tallians. this is new video the moment that earthquake hit h you can see the ground shaking as cameras captured the mag nude 6.2 earthquake. cnn is reporting 12 people have been killed in an attack on the american university students. the attack began with a suicide car bombing at the university entrance last night. more than eight hours later, police killed two attackers but so far no claims of responsibility. caught on camera, a newspaper box explodes in salem and this morning the search is on for the vandals seen running away. police are investigating this as a hate crime. >> that box belonged to an lgbt newspaper and it's wbz julie lawn chick reports.

rolling as seven individuals gathered around this newspaper box. >> it was pretty scary. >> reporter: loaded some sort of explosive inside. >> we think it's very damaging to our community. >> reporter: and waited for the large explosion that followed. the box is owned by one of new england's largest lgbt publications, the rainbow times. >> when i saw the video, there are no words to express. it was a combination of sadness, anger. >> reporter: she cofounded the publication a decade said there have been incidents of vandalism elsewhere before. >> i thought to myself why and in salem. >> reporter: but says since june, she's filed roughly ten police reports in salem because of ongoing incidents targeting this box. salem's police chief has had enough. >> and there are clearly other, you know, newspaper stands around, and they're not being touched. so this is a particular targeted hate crime. >> reporter: the mayor says her office simply won't stand for this. >> i don't want to be a

that. everyone should be outraged because this is touches on the fabric of everything we know and every person. >> reporter: she has ordered two more boxes and vows to keep publishing and togging. >> we are going to continue to be here. we are not scared. >> reporter: the state police bomb squad is also now involved. the list of charges these individuals will face is quite lengthy. in salem, wbz this morning. now to a developing story. a 15 year o of three teenage boys stabbed last night just before 6:30. friends say the injured boy ran home to his parents' apartment and his mother called 911. neighbors say he was a good kid with a lot of friends. >> why you take this little 15-year-old baby, he's a baby. he didn't get a chance to experience life and you're going to take some kid's life over something stupid. don't you think it's time for new bedford to wake up and

on. >> the other two boys are expected to recover. they have not released the victims name. no arrests are made. a woman is in critical condition this morning. the eagle tribune says she was shot in the head on freeman court around 6:00 last night. police found at least five shell casings on the ground. the street was closed to investigate. no arrests have been made. don't panic if you see low-flying helicopters buzzing around boston. it's part of a government training exercis us it's conducting training exercises through today. the dod also says this was planned and not, quote, in response to any world events this morning, there are no serious injuries but a lot of damage from a series of tornado in indiana. right now thousands in the middle of the state are without power as many as eight funnel clouds were reported, including one that passed directly over an apartment complex and ripped off its roof.

combine those donors contributed $156 million to the charity. clinton calls the report, quote, absurd, saying it's a lot of smoke, no fire. the wreckage after an ultralight helicopter pulled from the water after a pilot crashed in ashland. with the chopter sinking, he escaped and a boater jumped in to help. katie brace has the survival story. >> reporter: the ultralight helicopter emerged from the water just a few went under. of the pilot anxiously watched the divers and then closely inspected the aircraft as his wife teareded up. >> there was no place to go. >> reporter: his 200-pound plane crashed into the water late wednesday afternoon. boater tim and his threw young kids fished david from the reservoir. >> i put it in reverse as quick as i could, you know, went over there. he popped out of the water. >> i was swimming over, had my helmet still on.

here late, i'm glad because there was really nobody else around. there were some people in tubes way far out but nobody that could have got to him. >> reporter: first responders arrived in less than ten minutes. by then, the ultralight was already inres i believe -- invisible under the surface. david was walking around on shore with no injuries. >> very lucky. >> reporter: he has flown every day for the past year and a half. this is from one of his youtube video. david took off from the airport, flu over his houses does, but a short time later, he lost power. he says if he had a field, he could have saved the ultralight. at least in this spot he had tim newman help save him. >> we're always looking for a place if you have a problem and land. this was the only place. >> reporter: even though it's called the ashland reservoir, it is not a drinking water source and divers say no fuel leaked out and there was only less than

a helicopter helped recover a small plane stuck on a sand bar. the pilot told state police that mechanical issues forced him to make a emergency landing on tuesday. an investigation is now underway to determine if any charges should be filed. bad news for the red sox. they lost in extra innings and they may have lost to rookie outfielder to an injury. andrew benintendi had to be helped off the field last night after spraining his left knee it looks like in the seventh inning. he was trying to get back to second base when he hurt himself. sox manager said benintendi would undergo an mri in tampa today. they lost 4-3 in 11 innings. coming up on wbz this morning, massachusetts drought impacting more than just lawns. >> the town where people are being asked to cut back on showering. plus how the lack of rain could also have a positive impact. >> also head this morning, big changes ahead for restaurants in boston. the new inspection system just approved in the city.

you're watching, hi. >> hi, tim. >> thank you, appreciate it. let's get a check of the weather now. it is thursday, so close to the weekend which is very exciting. >> so close. it's going to be another nice one out there the weekend, tip top shape. we try things out. we have a chance prior to the weekend and then low humidity, tons of sunshine, summer-like temperatures, it doesn't get any better. i'll show you that in the seven day forecast. drought monitor, this will be morning. but for now, just want to keep this mind. we are under extreme drought conditions over boston and especially farther to the north and west. actually not north in salem, new hampshire. we're very, very much below average with where we should be on rainfall. almost eight inches of below where we should be in boston. i am tracking some rain, but it's not going to be an all-day soaking rain as we get into your forecast tonight and for friday.

we're starting off dry and comfortable. muggy in boston. warm morning there for you guys on the cape. hour by hour, temperatures will be in the 70s and then eventually the 80s. by 1:00 hitting 85 degrees. the mix of clouds and sunshine early today becoming mostly sunny with more clouds moving in right around the evening commute. and we have a south southwest wind pumping in the warm temperatures, even though we do expect a few hordes, we'll be right around -- horizon, we'll be right around 88 degrees all across massachusetts. if you're heading to the beach today, another great one for it. 80 to 87 degrees if you're laying out. boating water temperatures 68 to 76 degrees. and your high tide right around 5:21 p.m. a little breezy though. winds from the south and west gusting occasionally up to 20, 25 miles per hour. overnight we'll be tracking scattered storms and showers.

clouds roll into the picture by 5:00 p.m. and then some stray showers may make their way into the berkshires but should stay to our north and west. spotty showers, perhaps a thunderstorm right around the boston area. we'll have breaks in between the rain chances. 7:00 a.m. starting off friday, nice and dry. but muggy and some areas of fog. by 3:00 p.m., cold front moves through, that's going to help to trigger additional showers and thunderstorms moving through. and most of the rain gets out of here b so any activities you have friday night it's a go. you'll be dry. and check it out for the weekend, we couldn't have timed this out any better. saturday, sunday, plenty of sun, low humidity and highs in the mid to upper 80s. here is your seven at a forecast beyond that. we get back to some 70s for monday, tuesday, and next wednesday. back to you. >> thank you very much. the silver lining to the drought in new england, researchers say, the deer tick population will be down from previous years.

raheem's family says it still has questions about whether police plan to arrest raheem without a warrant. a convicted sex offender is being held on a half million dollars bail accused of raping a woman at a boston playground. rodriguez was previously convicted of raping a high school student. he was released from prison less than a year ago but wasn't on the registered sex offender list, that's because all sex offenders are entitled to a hearing to determine how they should be classified and whether they should be put back on the list. l their names are left off the list. even his former girlfriend didn't know he was a sex offender. >> every rapist should be on that website so people can know who they are and decide, like i said, if i knew all of this, i would have never, never been with him. >> the state department of public safety says the sex offender registry board has hired more hearing officers to move cases through and get serious offenders back on the list within a year.

morning. an autographed helmet stolen is back where it belongs this morning. the general manager at skip jacks tells us the helmet was mailed back to them with a card containing a written apology and enough money to cover the bill that that thief skipped out on. police are still investigating the theft that was caught on surveillance camera but skip jacks tells us they will not press charges. hope solo has been suspended for six months from the u.s. soccer team for her comments following a loss at the olympics. after the swedish eliminated the americans in the quarterfinals, solo called the team, quote, a bunch of cowards. the presses of u.s. obligator -- sockers says the olympics are supposed to be about fair play and respect and calls what solo said unacceptable. on her facebook page solo said she was saddened by the decision and will continue her passion to be the best goalkeeper in the world. olympic swimmer ryan lochte might be ditching the speedo for
