morning to find survivors. 0. good morning to you. it is 5:00 right now. thanks for joining us. >> it is thursday, august 25th. hopefully a lot of you are taking a long weekend and ditching out i. what a great day and stretch of days we have. >> another beautiful forecast for you. and we keep it mainly dry, although there is a small risk for an isolated shower late today, mainly to the north and to the west. but otherwise, it's going to picture perfect once again we're already warm, warm start here in boston. 68 degrees, 67 in manchester. 57 degrees in keen. one of the cooler spots there. but midday 85 degrees, increasing clouds and that wind picking up from the southwest. the dry home, 88 degrees. a stray shower to our northwest of our otherwise we're going to keep it dry. satellite and radar shows a few clouds that will continue to push offshore and an area of clear skies back to our west. this all prior to our cold front

tonight into tomorrow. tomorrow a better chance for spotty showers and storms and in just a few minutes i'll have that hour-by-hour timing. traffic and weather together now. kate. >> all right. thank you. taking a look at the pike right now, seeing some action there and some police lights but as you can see construction has down to one lane there in the pike. but so far so good at 5:00 as we wait for the commute to pick up here on a thursday. we're following several breaking news stories this morning. we begin in lawrence where crews you can see just how intense those flames are. >> let's get rate to nicole jacobs she is live on scene with the very latest. >> reporter: an extremely active scene here on summer street in lawrence. you can see right here beside me the firefighters are really coming up with a game plan as to how they will continue to fight this fire. but if you take a look up, you can see those efforts are ongoing. firefighters still putting water on this building.

this fire. it originally started in what we're told was an abandoned building. that was at 29. at this point the fire chief tells us everyone is accounted for, everyone is safe. he did have two firefighters injured as a result of fighting this fire, but he believes those injuries are minor. of course, this is a very early stage of this fire. but you can see when crews first arrived here on the flames were absolutely fierce, piercing through the roof there, an incredible fight and scene for them to fight. the challenge here, there are some very narrow alleyways, the road here is very narrow as well. so that has opinion a challenge for them to get all of the apparatus in, all of the ladders, everything they need to get the flame out. again, four buildings effected by this, so the fire spread and

in that number are children. we spoke with one of those children with the permission of his mother here's what he had to say. >> it was, like -- it was just fire at first. but then it started getting out of control, getting to other houses. it turned down a whole building. >> reporter: again, taking a life look here, you can see firefighters are feverishly hotspots here, making sure the situation is contained and that is the case according to the chief. he says the fire is contained, they have been able to just keep it to those four buildings that he says -- this is a very narrow street. the homes and the buildings are very close to one another so that is a challenge as well. they said that they've done some miraculous work here in assuring the fire does not spread further. we're going to continue to keep

chris, kate back to you. >> all right. thank you for that. we're also following breaking news overnight in boston. police investigating a shooting in dorchester. >> let's get right to brianna pitt. >> reporter: chris, kate, the shooting happened on 23 page street which is just off of mcclellan street. this shooting happened around 1:00 a.m. boston e.m.s. officials confirmed that they went inside the residence at 23 page and they found one person inside suffering from that person was transported to a legal hospital with life-threatening injuries. it appears that a dog may have been injured in this shooting as well. we did see officials on the scene wrapping the front paw, leg of what looks like a pit bull and they loaded some towels into the back of the car. and also loaded the dog into the car as well. just to set the scene for you, this is a neighborhood, it's a residential area. pretty quiet right now. but of course that wasn't the case a few hours ago. now it's unclear if that dog

shot as well or if he was suffering a different type of injury. boston police don't have anyone in custody for this shooting right now. reporting live in dorchester brianna pitts wbz this morning. breaking news from italy right now. 247 people now confirmed dead in that earthquake that hit three towns in a central part of the country there. this morning, the search for any survivors continues. cbs' tina crouse has the very latest >> reporter: rescue teams and earthquake ravaged italy worked into daybreak trying to find people feared buried alive under mounds of debris. armored tanks are joining the effort in hard-hit towns. yesterday, crews there carefully pulled a girl named julia to safety. she had been trapped for 17 hours. the scene did little to comfort this firefighter. julia is being taken to the hospital and that's good news,

the images speak for themselves. the powerful quake struck wednesday leaving hundreds dead, many of the victims came from here which is packed with tourists this time of year. several guests of the damaged hotel roma in the town lost their live when's the quake hit, including an 11-year-old boy who was first found alive in the rubble. a.m. reese was set to hold an annual food festival this weekend. now thousands of those left homeless by theis around the devastation. wondering how they'll rebuild from here. tina crouse, cbs news, italy. now to breaking news from afghanistan this morning. cnn is reporting 12 people have been killed in an attack on the american university there. seven of those victims are said to be students. the attack began with a suicide car bombing at the university entrance last night. more than eight hours later, police killed two attackers.

responsibility. this morning, police are investigating a hate crime targeting new england's largest lgbt publication. this surveillance video shows seven people loading explosives into the rainbow times newspaper box in downtown salem tuesday morning. they leave and it blows up. the publisher says the box has been vandalized nearly a dozen times in the last two months. in fact, the city moved it there so it could be seen by that camera. >> everyone should be outraged because this touches on the fabric of everything we know and everer here. it's not -- we are not scared. >> the newspaper has ordered two new boxes and state police bomb squad has joined the representation. a 15 year old was killed. he was one of three teenage boys stabbed last night near the intersection of the middle and kansas ry streets just before 6:30. friends say the juried boy ran home to his parents' apartment and his mom called 911. neighbors say he was a good kid

15-year-old baby. he's a baby. he didn't get a chance to experience life and you'll take some kid's life over something stupid? don't you think it's time for new bedford to wake up and realize what's going on. >> the original two boys are expected to recover. police have not yet released the victim's name and so far no arrests have been made. a woman is in critical condition this morning. the eagle tribune is reporting she was shot in the head on freeman court around 6:00 last night. police found at lea f casings on the ground. the street was closed for a short time. no arrests enter this case. this morning, there are no serious injuries but a lot of damage from a series of tornadoes in indiana. right now thousands in the middle of that state are without power as many as eight funnel clouds were reported including one that passed directly over an apartment complex and ripped its roof right off. >> i got out and called 911. she said go somewhere safe. i tried to push the door. the wind was blowing so fast.

don't be alarmed if you see low-flying helicopters flying around buildings in downtown boston. this video posted to twitter had a lot of people wondering what was going on. the department of defense tells us it's conducting training exercises through today. the dod says this was planned and is not, quote, in response to any world events. this morning, a pilot is safe, thanks to a good samaritan who saw him crash. david dianna says he lost power over the ashland reservoir. when he couldn' patch of land, he decided to put down in the water. dianna wasn't hurt. luckily a man fishing with his son saw the crash. >> i put in reverse as quick as i could, is you know, went over there. he popped out of the water. >> i was is swimming over, had my hell met still on. >> for whatever reason, we got here late. but i'm glad because there was really nobody else around. there were some people in tubes

today, notice mostly clear with the clouds increasing from west to east. overnight, here's a 11:00 p.m., isolated shower, maybe a storm, nothing severe expected but tomorrow morning we start off dry again. so off and on rain chances as we get into friday as well. 3:00 p.m. along the cold front as it moves through the boston area right in the later part of the afternoon. that's when we could see our best chance of organized shower and thunderstorm activity. some of the storms could produce some gusty wind and brief heavy wn risk with any storm that develops. but after 7:00 p.m. friday, we're drying off and it's going to be a picture-perfect weekend. i can't believe this. cape and islands forecast, a brief shower. saturday and sunday low 80s, plenty of sunshine and lower humidity. sunday 86. and next week, we're getting hot again. high temperatures back in the 90s. traffic and weather together now. chris. >> thank you very much.

pike this morning. you can see there is a little bit of volume out there this morning. very light for your thursday morning. things will be picking up later. you are reduced to one lane at parts of the pike because of construction this morning. well the black boxes of the el faro are giving investigators some new information. audio recordings from the bridge caught the captain ordering his crew to an baaen done ship ten -- abandon ship. the recording ends ten minutes later. the four-year-old ship had open life boats unlike more modern ships. it sarng last october after sailing into hurricane joaquin. all 33 on board died, including six with ties to new england. an autographed helmet stolen from a restaurant back where it belongs this morning. the general manager at skip jacks tells us the helmet was mailed back to them with a card containing a written apology and enough money to cover the bill the thief skipped out on.

surveillance camera but skips jacks says they will not press charges. ac track's service heading south of boston could be interrupted. the boston business journal says a legal dispute between ac track and the mbta could put service on hold. they are feuding over a rail line. it allowed amtrak to use the line if they provided maintenance and other services. but a federal commission called for states to share more than a million dollars. it works in schools and in new york city, now boston is switching to a letter grade system for restaurants. boston city council has approved the letter grade system. a restaurant will receive an a, b, or c based on the number of violations found during city inspections and how bad those violations are. eventually restaurants will have to post those letter grades out front. massachusetts high school students had the country's

legs. and breaking news in lawrence, crews battling this big fire. it spread to at least four buildings there. the red cross says 25 to 35 people are displaced because of the fire and two firefighters were hurt, according to the chief. police are telling people in that area to avoid it if you can. we do have a crew on the scene. we'll have an update coming up. also breaking overnight, 247 people now confirmed dead earthquake that hit three towns. last night a ten-year-old girl was pulled from the rubble about 17 hours after the quake. live pictures rit now as rescue crews are using bulldozers and they're bare hands to try to reach any survivors. one of the collapsed buildings is a hotel believed to have 35 guests. the region is a popular summer holiday spot for italians. the -- many residents there have relatives in italy and those who

>> of course they were scared, and they didn't know what was going on because, is of course, in this case it's difficult to communicate because sometime the lines were down. so we're not easy to make sure that all the family members were okay. >> a few friends of mine of the family that are trying to get in touch with people via, you know, facebook, phone call, whatever, just to make sure everyone is okay. ir know some people have been able to get in touch, some eventually heard back at all yet. >> some restaurants in end yesterday had their televisions tune toed to italian stations. cleared of a wrongdoing of a terror suspect. the suffolk county district attorney found that members of the joint terrorism task force shot raheem because he posed a serious threat to their safety. investigators say raheem came at them with a military-style knife last summer. the 26-year-old was under investigation for possible ties to a plot to kill police.

the presidency and stop taking donations from foreign governments and corporate interests. however, the candidate herself still won't acknowledge the appearance of conflict in many of the foundation's past aesos. and what about trump? he has said little about how he would prevent conflicts between his presidential decisions an his vast business interests. other than to rule out placing his holdings in a blind trust as trump says he will turn his company over to his children. but that won't solve anything. keep in mind, there's no law preventing him from using his power to line the family's pockets. there's a reason why these two people are the least trusted presidential nominees in modern history. they seem to share the view that ethical standards and expectations of transparency just don't apply to them.

scenes. they first arrived in mcclellan street where they found shell casings. then they found a victim inside on page street. it appears a pet may have been injured in the shooting. we saw people bandage ago up a dog -- bandaging up a dog's front paw. 0. >> reporter: i'm nicole jacobs live on the scene of a four-alarm fire. if you take a look behind me, you can still see purring fire on the direct building. this is 29 summer street is where it all happened. the building you see with the most extensive damage looks like that's 31. though you can is still see smoke is still coming up from those buildings. i do want to get you ride to some video from where firefighters first arrived here on the scene. you can see just how intense those flames were. we know 25 people have been displaced as a result of this fire.

is accounted for this morning. two firefighters were injured. he does believe they will be okay. we spoke with one gentleman here on the scene as soon as we got here, he was carrying a suitcase of all of his precious belongings. let's listen. >> i was sleeping and someone called me that there was a fire. so i just grabbed everything i could and got out. >> and what was the -- what was the extent of the fire at that point? could you see it? >> yeah, it was, like, terrible already. >> reporter: taking yet another live look here on summer street. we know this fire has spread to four buildings. so four buildings total have been damaged as a result of this fire. the one you're looking at right now, the roof completely damaged. completely collapsed as a result of this fire. a lot of mutual aid we're told by the fire chief here.
