. good morning. thanks for joining us. >> it is thursday, august 25th. >> we are following several breaking stories right now at 6:00. massive flames shooting from a home. it's already spread. the the damage. >> and breaking news news dorchester. police investigating a shooting that sent one person to a hospital and injured a dog. >> plus a search for a group of vandals who set off a explosion in salem. why it's being called a hate crime. >> we'll have the latest on the seven for survivors. >> let's get a check for the forecast. it is thursday, the weekend is right around the corner. things looking great? >> not bad. we're off to a warm start. you notice the humidity, it's going up a little bit.

creep up until tomorrow. 68 degrees in boston. nix keen. 67 in manchester. chatham the hotspot this morning with 71 degrees. by midday 85 increasing clouds late this afternoon and yes, the wind from the southwest occasionally gusting at times. but the drive home 88 degrees. chance for a stray shower mainly to the west or north. and satellite and radar shows a few clouds moving offshore here. we havemore -- more rain to the west of us and the cold front at afternoon bringing us some spotty showers and storms. i'll have that timing and update what's going on in the tropics. traffic and weather together now chris. >> okay. thank you very much. here's a live look at the zakim bridge. you can see we have some moderate volume out there. the leverett connector is starting to fill in as you connect on to steroid drive this morning. so you might see a little bit of a delay. we're seeing some delays at the braintree split. we are following several

we begin in lawrence where crews are battling a massive house fire that spread to several buildings. nicole jacobs is live on the scene. >> reporter: kate, the good news no one was injured seriously. two firefighters we're told received minor injuries. all the residents, though, are accounted for and that is certainly the good news when you take a look at just the extent of what's going on here. you can see firefighters still working to kind of man t control. it is contained at this point we're told by the chief. but let's get right to some video from a few hours ago when the fire was really fierce. really piercing through the roof of one of these buildings and then spreading to three others. so at this point, four buildings are affected by this. i can tell you that residents here in essence ran for their lives as some of them put it. they gathered their belongings, they gathered their families and

to safety. one man telling me he opened the door and he was met with a wall of flames. again, 25 residents affected by the fire in that number, are children. we did speak with one little boy as -- with the permission of his mother. here's what he had to say. >> all of a sudden i woke up, my mom was yelling at me, is said get down, get out of the house. there was i was really scared. >> reporter: and that was the case for many residents here. they were asleep when this fire started. and the fire began in an abandoned building. so certainly there is no telling how long that fire was going before it was actually noticed by residents here. i did hear one of the firefighters here say every big fire starts small. so that's likely exactly what happened in that abandoned building. it started small but because no

very big. four homes affected by this. all residents accounted for. that's the good news here. we'll continue to keep you updated throughout the morning. chris, kate, back to you. >> okay. thank you very much. we're also following breaking news in boston overnight. police investigating a shooting and a dog may have been involved with this one, too. brianna pitts is live on the scene with more for us. >> reporter: chris, police were originally called here to mcclellan street where they found shell casings. then they went jar they say they found a victim suffering from a gunshot wound inside this home. that person was transported with life-threatening injuries to a local hospital. and it appears a dog may have been injured in this shooting as well. we did see officials on the scene wrapping up the front right leg of a pit bull. we saw them lay some towels down in the back seat and carry that dog into the car. just to give you an idea of this area, it's residential, it's a

charter school, and the franklin park zoo, all very close to this area. this morning boston police have also not made any arrests in this case. recording live from dorchester, brianna pitts, wbz this morning. also breaking overnight, 247 people now confirmed dead in the earthquake that hit three downs in italy. last night a ten-year-old girl right there was pulled from the rubble about 17 hours after that bulldozers and they're bare hands to try to reach any survivors. one of the collapsed buildings is a hotel believed to have dozens of guests. the region is a popular summer holiday spot for italians. this is new video of the moment, rather, that the quake struck yesterday morning. you can see the ground shaking as the traffic cameras captured the magnitude 6.2 earthquake. now to some breaking news from afghanistan. at least 12 people have an killed in an attack on the

be students. the attack began with a suicide car bombing at the university entrance last night. more than eight hours later, police killed two attackers. so far no one has claimed responsibility. caught on camera, a newspaper box explodes in salem and this morning the search is on underway for the vandals. that box belonged to an lgbt newspaper. testifies not the first time it rolling as seven individuals gathered around this newspaper box. >> it was pretty scary. >> reporter: loaded some sort of explosives inside. >> i think it's very damaging to our community. >> reporter: and waited for the large explosion that followed. the box is owned by one of new england's largest lgbt publications, the rainbow times. >> when i saw the video, there were no words to express how i felt. it was a combination of sadness,

been incidents of vandalism elsewhere before. >> i thought to myself and why in salem. >> reporter: but she says since june she's filed roughly ten police reports in salem because of ongoing incidents targeting this box. salem's police chief has had enough. >> they're clearly other, you know, newspaper stands around and they're not being touched. so this is a particular targeted hate crime. >> reporter: the mayor says her office simply won't stand for this. >> i don't want to be a community that isn't welcome to indicative of that. everyone should be outraged because this touches on the pab rick of everything that we know and every person. >> reporter: she has ordered two more boxes and vows to keep publishing and talking about. >> we are going to continue to be here. we are not scared. >> and this morning the state police bomb squad is also involved in the investigation. a list of charges that those individuals will face is lengthy. now to a developing story in new bedford. a 15 year old was killed. he was one of three teenage boys

chancery streets just before 6:30. friends say the injured boy ran home to his parents' house and his mom called 911. neighbors say he was a good kid with a lot of friends. >> why you take this little 15-year-old baby? he's a baby. he didn't get a chance to experience life. and you're going to take some kid's life over something stupid? don't you think it's time for new bedford to wake up and realize what's going on? >> why the other two boys are expected to recover. police have not yet released the victim's name and so arrests have been made. a woman is in critical condition this morning after a shooting in lawrence. the eagle tribune says she was shot in the head on freeman court around 6:00 last night. police found at least five shell casings on the ground. of the street was closed for a short time as they investigated. so far no arrests in this case. a heads up for you, don't panic if you see low-flying helicopters buzzing around boston today. it's all part of a government training exercise. this video posted to twitter where a lot of people were

tells us its conducting training exercises through today. the d.o.d. says this was planned and is not, quote, in response to any world events. this morning there are no serious injuries but lots of damage from a series of tornados in indiana. right now thousands in the middle of the state are without power. as many as eight clouds were reported, including one passed directly over an apartment complex and ripped off its roof. >> i got out to call 911. she said look go somewhere safe. i the wind was blowing so fast. i came out, i was disturbed because i never seen something like this in my life. i shut the door and then it blew my window out. and then that was it. i just ran downstairs. i was just so scared. >> indiana governor, mike pence, who is also donald trump's running mate, will tour the damage today. campaign 2016, is returning to new england. donald trump will be in new hampshire today. the republican presidential nominee will hold a rally at the

doors to the event open you were at 10:00 a.m. last night in mississippi, trump called hillary clinton a, quote, big ot and said the democrats have taken the support of minorities for granted. mean tile, hillary clinton will be in reno today. this as her campaign and family defends its foundation. an associated press report criticized the clinton foundation for who it takes donations from and whether those tow mores got special ac -- donors got special access. combined they contributed clinton calls the report absurd and says it's a lot of smoke, no fire. bad news for the red sox in tampa. they lost to rehs in extra innings. they may have lost a rookie outfielder to an ir why. benintendi had to be held off the feel last night after spraining his left knee it the seventh inning. he was trying to get back to second when he hurt himself. sox manager said benintendi would undergo an mri in tampa

category two potentially as we get into early next week. this is actually going to pass just to the east of bermuda for now. which is good news and staying off the coast of the u.s. and we have another tropical wave here invest 99-l. 45-mile-per-hour winds. buff it's not necessarily organized enough to become a tropical storm or a named storm just yet. it is moving west northwest at 22 miles per hour. and we put all of our spaghetti plots on here. today some updated information with all putting it all together here. this will continue to track through the baemz. but going towards the weekend, there is still some uncertainty where exactly that center of the storm is going to land. but florida, if you have friends or family there, you may want to make sure they have a game plan just in case. we'll keep you you want to date over the next few days -- keep you you want to date. a veil of clouds. today we'll have plenty of

some lower 80s once you get from wis ter right around 80 degrees on the cape with some 70s found on the islands. overnight tonight, 72, muggy, and a chance for some scattered storms. here's your hour-by-hour timing. we're all dry for the first half of the day here. 5:00 p.m. the clouds increase from west to east and we'll have the potential for a spot shower. most of those showers holding off until 1:00 p.m. then a shower may pass through boston. most of us will be dry going into friday morning and it's a clean start to the day our cold front and ahead of this front will be humid, temperatures nearly 90 degrees again. with the potential for an isolated storm along this cold front too is that marches through by 7:00 p.m. we're drying off once again and the weekend couldn't look any better for this tail end of summer. saturday and sunday mid to upper 80s, low humidity both days this weekend and a -- and the heat returns this weekend with highs back in the low 70s. traffic and weather together. >> all right.

on the roads. you can see still looking pretty good. 93 north there although volume is finally start to -- starting to building, our big problems on southeast expressway. bumper to bumper. also on route three north -- south, up the north of the city there's an accident reported there at exit 27. that is causing big delays on route three south as you make your way into the city. this morning a pilot is safe thanks to a goo saw him crash. david says he lost power over the ashland reservoir. when he couldn't find a safe patch of land he decided to put it down in the water. he wasn't hurt and luckily a man fishing with his sun saw the -- his son saw the crash. >> i have put it in reverse as quick as i could, i went over there and he popped out of the water. >> i was swimming over, i had my helmet on. >> we got here late, but i'm glad paws there was really nobody else around.

way far out but nobody that could have got to him. >> the ashland reservoir is not a water supply and officials say no fuel leaked out of the plane. a helicopter helped recover a male plane stuck on a sand bar. a pilot told state police mechanical issued forced him to make an emergency landing. an investigation is underway to determine if any charges should be filed. do your favorite restaurants make the grade? soon there will be an easier way to find out. according to the globe, bosto letter grade system for local restaurants. a restaurant will be given an a, a b, or a c based on the number of violations found during the city and how bad those violations are. eventually restaurants will have to post those letter grades out front. it is 6:0019 rights now. elizabeth warren will sfeek today. she will given a presentation at the media arts center. she's expected to focus on how the playing field is tilted against the middle class and

. a costly mistake on the waterfront in medford. a man was trying to tow his jet ski when his luck started rolling back into the water. crews had to wrap ties around parts of the truck to pull it out. the driver not hurt. amtrak service headed south of boston could be interrupted.

a legal dispute between amtrak and the nbta could put the service on hold. the two are feuding over the attleboro rail line which both services use. the t said it allowed amtrak to use the line if they provided maintenance and other services. but a federal commission called for states to share costs. amtrak says the t owes them more than a million dollars. uber now helping its drivers prepare for retirement. the ride-sharing company is offering retirement plans for drivers in four citie including boston. drivers can use their uber app to open an ira for free and there's no minimum account balance. an autographed helmet stolen from a restaurant is back where it belongs. of the manager tells us the helmet was mailed back to them with a card containing a written apology and enough money, about $70, to cover the bill that that thief skipped out on. police are still investigating the theft that was caught on

jacks says now they will not press charges. new this morning, another great white shark has been tagged off cape cod. this is number 11 for the season. working with the atlantic conservatory tagged the shark on tuesday. well a silver lining to the drought in new england. researchers say the deer tick population will be down from previous years. it's too son to say for sure but that could mean a decrease -- the drought is so pad, the reservoir is down 2015 percent and the town is -- 2015%. they've banned all outdoor watering. scituate's population nearly doubles in the summer. but the water restrictions will stay in place until the reservoir can recover. loss more still to come in our next half hour. we'll update you on two breaking stories. >> a massive fire spread to

build up there. a big trouble on the expressway. basically starting from the split all the way up. our other big problems route 33 south. there is an extent there -- accident there that's causing big delays. also big trouble on 24 north as you approach 95. the pike is starting to slow up as well right now also from framingham and some spots once you cross over 128. chris. we're following several breaks story. we start in lawrence where crews are battling a m fire. that spread so several other buildings. wbz nicole jacobs is lye on the scene for the latest. the. >> reporter: chris, hotspots continue to flare up here on summer street in lawrence. you take a look here behind me. firefighters are now again putting water on 29 summer street here. this is where the original fire started and it then spread to three other buildings. so four buildings total are affected by this fire. i want to get you right to some

when firefighters first arrived here. they were piercing through the window and it was definitely a ferocious scene when firefighters got here and they were met with some challenges, the narrow roadways, the narrow alleyways, made it difficult for firefighters to bring in their trucks and all their ladders. a lot of mutual aid here. in the end we're told 25 people were displaced as a result of this fire. in that number, children. it's unclear exactly how many. but all of them r accounted for. we do know two firefighters were injured as a result of this fire. but for residents it was a situation that woke them up out of their sleep. let's listen. >> i don't know, i just -- it was bad. i got everything i could. >> what kinds of things did you have? >> i got some clothes, my papers, passport and stuff like that. >> scary situation?

fire at first. but then it started getting out of control, getting to other houses. it burned down a whole building. >>. >> reporter: a scary situation for residents. taking a live look at where the fire started. firefighters are once again putting water on this building. we do know the mayor is here. the mayor of lawrence has arrived here on the scene right now the fire chief is speaking situation as they try to get things under control and really help for the 25 residents who are displaced. again, everyone accounted for which is certainly good news when you see a scene like this and the homes and the buildings so close together. the fire chief says they worked very quickly to make sure it was contained to just those buildings. we'll continue to keep you updated throughout the morning. chris and kate, back to you. we're also following breaking news in boston

involved in this. brianna pitts is live on the scene this morning with what we know. good morning, brianna. >> reporter: good morning. police were first called here to mcclellan street where they found many shell casings then they went just around the corner to 23 page street and they say they found a victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach right inside this brown home here. that person was transported with life-threatening injuries to a local hospital. and it does appear that a dog may have been injured inhi scene wrapping up the front right leg of what looks like a pit bull. we also saw them lay some towels down in the back seat and they carried the dog inside the car. just to give you an idea of where this happened. this is a residential area. it's a neighborhood. the houses are very close together. there's also a golf course, a charter school and the franklin park skoo all -- park zoo all close by. reporting live from dorchester brianna pitts. >> thank you very much.

investigating a hate crime targeting new england's largest lgbt publication. surveillance video shows seven people putting something into the rainbow times newspaper box in downtown salem early sunday morning. they leave as you just saw the box explodes. the publisher says the box has been vandalized nearly a dozen times in the last two months. in fact, the city moved it there to so it could be seen by this camera. >> everyone should be outraged because this touches on the fabric on everything we know and every person. we here. it's not -- we are not scared. >> the publisher is vowing to continue their work. they've already ordered two new boxes and the state police bomb squad has joined the investigation. boston police officers and fbi agents have been cleared of wrongdoing in the shooting death of a terror suspect. the suffolk county d.a. found members of the joint task force shot raheem because he posed a serious threat to their safety.

in a parking lot last summer. the 26 year old was under investigation for possible ties to a plot to kill police. raheem's family says it still has questions about whether police planned to arrest him without a warrant. a convicted sex offender is being held in a half million dollars bail accuse. raping a woman at a boston playground. rodriguez was previously convicted of raechg a high school student. he was released from prison less than a year ago but wasn't on the registered sex offende are entitled to a hearing to determine how they should be classified and whether they should be put back on the list. until that process is over, their names are left off the list even his former girlfriend didn't know he was a sex offender. >> every rapist should be on that website so people can know who they are and decide like i said if i knew all of this i would have never, never been with him. >> the state department of public safety says the sex offender registry board has

cases through and get serious offenders back on the list within a year. the black boxes of the el faro are giving investigators new information. officials say audio recordings from the bridge caught the captain ordering his crew to abandon ship. ten hours after leaving jacksonville. the recording ends minutes later. the 40-year-old ship has open -- had open life boats unlike the more modern ships. the cargo ship sank in the sailing into hurricane joaquin. all 33 crew on board died, including six with ties to new england. this morning, a warning for drivers. ford announcing a recall. the automaker says engines on more than 88,000 cars and suvs can stall without warning. it's the result of an issue with the fuel pump. it affects various mods from 2013 to 2015.

investigating the death of a woman on a zip line ride. investigators say the 59 year old fell 40 feet at the go ape tree top park. the park closed and gave refunds to customers. the park tells the delaware news journal it is fully cooperating with authorities. hope solo has been suspended for six months from the u.s. soccer team. her comments following a loss in the olympics after the swedish women's team eliminated the americans in the quarterfinals. solo called the team, quote, a bunch of cowards. the pre says the olympics are supposed to be about fair play and respect and calls what solo said unacceptable. on her facebook page, solo said she was saddened by the decision and will continue her passion to be the best goalkeeper in the world. in the meantime ryan lochte might be ditching his speedo for a fair of dancing shoes. the olympian is in talks to join season 23 of dancing with the

negative pub police at this he has received for lying about being robbed. ghostbusters and snl star leslie jones hacked. the hackers took over her website yesterday posting explicit drivers, her driver's license and pass port information all likely from her apple cloud account. this wouldn't be the first time jones has been targeted in an online attack. in july she temporarily quit twitter after receiving sexists and racist tweet to keep birthday private. gab reell the president says she would have never been asked to audition for the role of a teenager on beverly hills 90210 if agents known she was actually 29 at the time. the union is sponsoring legislation that would force sites like imdb to take down birthday details if asked. massachusetts high school students have the country's

this fire. none of the residents were hurt. but three firefighters were injured. the mayor is now on the scene and police are telling people to avoid that area. also breaking overnight a shooting in dorchester. one person rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. police were called to mcclellan street around 1:00 a.m. right across the golf course and franklin park zoo. the investigation then moved just a few blocks away to page street. the victim was found inside a home there. police are still at the scene investigating this morning. emergency crews a we're hearing the dog may have been hit too. it had a bandage on one of its legs. police took that dog from the scene. and breaking overnight in italy. 247 people now confirmed dead in that earthquake that hit three towns in the central part of the country. take a look. last night a ten-year-old girl was pulled out from the rubble 17 hours after the quake hit. live pictures right now you can see crews are using bulldozers and their bare hands to try to reach any survivor.
