breaking news at 6:00, an enormous fire erupts on plum island. jumping from one house to another. we are live with the very latest. also, a midair scare. part of a plane's engine falls apart in flight. the major malfunction and under arrest. a man charged with the brutal murders of two nuns who were dedicate today helping the poor. -- dedicated to helping the poor. when we have the next chance of rain in the seven day forecast. a massive fire jumps from home to home on plum island. as black smoke billows over the

sounding. at least three homes were involved in this and firefighters from several towns scrambled to plum island to help. our jim smith is live now with the latest on this breaking news story. jim? >> reporter: ken, this fire was obviously terrible. but the good news tonight, the incredible news, is that there are no serious injuries. unfortunately, as you can see, the damage has been done. take a look at what is left of this home. just a shell of -- charred steaming timbers and bun of the biggest -- one of the biggest chng thing from spreading even further. the roaring fire broke out at 1,120th street a blaze that quickly went to five and then six alarms. from land and from the sea it could be seen for miles. the flames threatened other nearby homes, a serious situation made worse by the intense heat. >> very hot in the eat. that's why -- heat. that's why it took double the manpower to fight it with heat like this.

attack. that makes it better but still, a tremendous effort in the heat like this. >> reporter: fire departments from at least five different communities were called in to fight the flames. finally, by late afternoon, the fire was brought under control. somehow the flames didn't spread further. two other homes were slightly damaged but the house where the fire started looks like a total loss. >> it's very upsetting. yeah. it's very upsetting. to see soin flames. it's so surreal. it hasn't set in. tonight i will not go back to my house. >> reporter: back here live on plum island on a saturday evening, we talked about the heat. take a look at that melted siding there on the house that is all just one mass of just damage right there. and the fire obviously also damaged some cars and if you look in front of the primary home that was damaged, you can see that these vehicles are also a total loss.

news, no civilian injuries really no serious injuries at all and one firefighter we are told was treated for a heat related condition but he's going to be okay. the cause of this now under investigation. live on plum island, jim smith, wbz news. >> all right jim thanks. back in boston, police are investigating a string of violence overnight that has claimed at least two lives. wbz is live in dorchester right now and shop tea, this is tied to the caribbean festiv commissioner bill evans with bpd was here earlier today. he says three of the four shootings overnight is tied to this festival. >> i was aleap in the house. and -- asleep in the house and heard gunshots. >> in the middle of the flight. >> reporter: bulleting in jamaica plain outside center street strikes and kills a man. he was sitting in a wheelchair. >> it's very surprising. there hasn't been much violence at all in the neighborhood.

sufficient that goes down like any other major city but generally a pretty safe spot. >> clearly he was targeted. i know he was in the area and i think he's out panhandling quite a bit. and you know, it's troubling. >> reporter: that was one of four shootings overnight. the three others were from parties indirectly tied to events surrounding the annual caribbean festival parade. >> yesterday, i went out in front of the media and sort of said this is always a challenging night for us. i think we by the time we -- this time last year. we had four so far this year. and so we're working hard. we had a lit of extra visibility out there. >> reporter: a man shot and killed on westville street in dorchester was indirectly tied to the festival. >> i hate to always tie it to the parades because those events themselves are great family events. but unfortunately people are up all night partying. >> reporter: mayor walsh who stopped by the festival vows to make a change. >> we're on top of it. we're out there and doing our

bring the violence down. >> reporter: and boston police say so far, no suspect information or arrests in any of the four cases. they're leaning on the public right now for help. live in dorchester, shop thailand, wbz news. back to you ken. >> thanks. now a developing story, police in mississippi have made an arrest in the brutal murders of two nuns including one who glue up in -- grew up in stoneham, mass. this is 46-year-old rodney earl sanders now char their rural mississippi home. police have hinted at evidence of a break-in but have not yet been specific about motive. the bodies of sister paula merrill a stoneham native and her lifelong friend sister margaret held were discovered on thursday. after the 68-year-olds didn't show up at the medical clinic where they worked. >> they actually spent their entire lives searching this community -- serving this community right here. i'm sure our community is

than three decades, as seen in this video, the nuns who are worked as -- worked as nun practitioners helping and providing low cost or free medical care in a place where 44% of the residents live in poverty. paula merrill's sister and brother still live in stoneham. >> patients always love -- absolutely loved her, she was so good to them. they both went so far above ande expected of a normal human being. >> reporter: police began looking at sandsers early on but won't say why. he was not a patient at the nuns' clinic. the victim's stolen car was found less than a mile from the murder scene. sanders has been charged with two counts of capital murder. meaning he could face if death penalty in mississippi. rose marie merrill says she knows her sister would have urged forgiveness but she's not sure she can do that.

aly raisman was cheered along the streets where she grew up and now she has a special message for girls looking to follow in her footsteps as wbz's paul burton explains. [ chanting ] >> reporter: it was an olympic homecoming for needham's own aly raisman arriving on a fire truck with thunderous aplus. she took part in a rally for ali on the town common. >> thank you so much for coming today. >> reporter: she grew up in needham class of 2012. today august aly raisman today for the town of needham. >> the beautiful rio 2016 olympics right. >> there is all a dream and it doesn't feel like it's actually all happened because i've spent so much time you know, stressing about competing and then it actually kind of just all came together. >> reporter: during the rally, ali took questions from her fans. >> what is it like being one of

>> oh, yeah. we have some fall-like temperatures moving in a little bit of the canadian air mass moves our way but it's a briefer transition the cooler temperatures -- to cooler temperatures and the second half of the labor day forecast looking much warmer and a great way to end the summer. but here we go, so far it's still the driest summer on record in boston. and by driest summers we mean meteorological summers, june, july august and only picked up 3.92 inches the number one spot, 3.97 inches of rain set in 1957. well, we're going to make a run at it. as we track our next chance of rain going into monday but it all depends on whether or not that rain falls right over logan ate. radix -- airport. ridiculous but that's what it is. in the next couple of days here rain probability very, very low. we don't show you the probabilities too too often but just to give you a better

very slim chance of rain on monday, tuesday no chance. wednesday and thursday, next round of some rain that could give us a brief soaking and isolated spots but again, it's not going to be a drought buster or anything like that. hour by hour forecast, for the evening, we'll notice the puffy clouds go away. overnight tonight, we're all clear, 7:00 a.m. waking top maybe -- up to maybe areas of patchy fog in low lying spots and by sunday afternoon, more of those fair weather cumulus clouds developing in the heat of the day. still dry sunday night. and then mond showers but notice, it's not too big of a deal here. monday afternoon, we're mainly dry monday evening another round of some spotty showers as well. big picture is we're going to continue to stay ultimately dry. and very warm. one of the warmest augusts on record here in boston. since 1872 at this point in the month and we still have more time to go but76.8-degrees is

nominee. today clinton met with intelligence staffers at the fbi office in white plains, new york. the briefing is customary for the two major party presidential nominees. clinton's opponent donald trump was briefed earlier this month. today speaking of trump, he's in iowa stumping for votes. this, as his campaign faces yet another controversy. the republican has been under fire for this tweet sent out today. in it. he claims the deadly shooting of nba african-american voters will back his campaign. the libertarian ticket was no boston today for a campaign stop. gary johnson and former massachusetts governor bill welds here a rally morning on the boston -- rally this among on the boston common. they are pushing to be included in any televised debate with donald trump and hillary clinton. still to come on the program -- brady is back. for now the q is get -- quarterback is getting his first snaps of the season but
