scene looking for flare-ups. neighbors say this could have been even worse if not for some helping hands. our jim smith is live on plum island tonight and he joins us with the very latest. jim? >> reporter: well, ken, we still don't know what caused this fire here on plum island. but i can tell you that investigators with the state fire marshal's office were here for most of the evening and meanwhile take a look at what's left of this house. unfortunately it's in ruins. but incredibly nobody was hurt and as you will see, it could have been much w. fire crews work into the night. soaking down hot spots only hours after an inferno destroyed a home on plum island. the five alarm fire broke out sat -- saturday afternoon and it was roaring in no time at all leafing a home in dash -- leaving a home in ashes and badly damaging the others. >> my mom's house. >> reporter: amy's family home

neighbors and families. >> it wasn't any one house that anyone was caring about. it was everybody's houses. and everyone just pitched in and people grabbed hoses and buckets and they were throwing water. everywhere. >> reporter: but not everybody was so lucky. kenny doors' family home was incinerated along with some cars parked out front. >> it's very upsetting. yeah. it's very upsetting you know to see something like that happen. and your whole house goes flames pretty much. it's very surreal right now. hasn't set in. tonight i will not go back to my house. >> reporter: the fire could be seen for miles around, from land and the sea. the damage is severe but incredibly nobody is hurt. it took a group effort to keep the entire neighborhood from going up in flames. >> mutual aid from as far south as middleton and as far north as the new hampshire seacoast. they did a great job in the heat and proud of all of them.

a great job by everybody involved in making sure that these flames did not spread even further. that includes an off-duty fire captain who lives right here on the street and sounded one of the first alarms. and also a police officer here in new bury who went into the home to make sure that everybody was out safely. live on plum island, jim smith, wbz news. >> jim thanks. the community is more thanking an 18-year-old kidded in -- killed in an alleged drunk driving morning. the da's office says austin robins was killed after the car he was in went out of control and struck several trees. people gathering to drop off flowers and cards or just taking time to reflect. the driver 19-year-old joseph cap of gardener has been charged with drunk driving and motor vehicle homicide. in boston, a string of violence is being tied to this weekend's caribbean festival. at least three shootings

chantee lans is live in rose bury tonight and she joins us with the latest. >> reporter: ken, police say that shooting that killed a man was actually indirectly tied to that parade but the community tells me that this parade is both respected and part of their tradition. >> it's a culture thing. i love it. >> reporter: the caribbean festival parade continues the traditions spanning decades. >> i'm trinidadian. you know, i come out all time and i support. >> reporter: but this year and recent ones left a negative impression. three of night shootings happened at -- overnight shootings happenedment and one of the shootings on westville street in dorchester left a man dead. >> yesterday, i went out in font of the media and sort of said this is always a challenging night for us, i think we had five people shot by the time we -- this time last year. we had four so far this year. and so we're working hard. we had a lot of extra visibility out there.

street. that man was targeted officers say. tonight, tufts police are increasing patrols following a break-in near campus, this as thousands of college students return to the boston area and authorities say early this morning, a student woke up in bed with a man standing in the room. that suspect quickly took off and ran down college avenue and jumped into a car. police are investigating. aquinas man is facing charges after driving into a hingeham cafe. police say jeffrey mahoney went over the sidewalk and right cafe on north street last night. two customers inside were seriously hurt and a passenger in the truck was also injured. police say mahoney is okay and was not under the influence. the last few weekends of the summer and we're getting a winner. a picture-perfect day today but will tomorrow be a repeat? meteorologist pamela gardner has the accuweather forecast. >> oh, yeah it will. another gorgeous day and a

beautiful weekend we've been experiencing and temperatures right now have cools into the 70s and 60s. 66 degrees norwood and all afternoon temperatures were in the 70s along the coast thanks to a sea breeze that kicked in late this afternoon. while inland, we had some high temperatures in the mid- to upper aides. well -- 80s. well, dew point temperatures are way more comfortable compared to last couple of days as promised. the dryer air has settled in and we have dew point temperatures in the 50s. and anything 65 degrees or higher. that's when it does become sticky and so we're far from that. overnight lows will get pretty close to those dew point temperatures. and that means we could be tracking some areas of patchy fog going into tomorrow morning. the low in boston though 65 degrees. tomorrow afternoon plenty of sunshine again cooler along the coast and mostly sunny and a high of88 degrees, satellite and radar shows we're clear for most locations. our next system though sitting back to our west, and this one is bringing a chance for rain but it's not a big chance. i'll have the breakdown of that

roller coaster temperatures when we'll see 90s and when we could have high temperatures around service in the seven day forecast. ken? thanks. scary moments on board a southwest airlines' jet when part of the engine comes apart mid-flight. these images obtained by wbz news show the engine with its front cover torn off and passengers were going from new orleans to orlando when they heard a blast and oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling. the flight continued on for about 30 minutes before making an emergency landing in pensacola. >> it was shaking -- right afterwards and that sound. >> just like blew. you could hear it blow. >> then there was that rattling after it and we -- and i was -- shook a lot when we were landing. >> parts of the engine tore off and damaged other parts of the plane including a wing. luckily nobody was hurt and the plane landed safely. southwest says the plane is now being inspected and the ntsb is

now a developing story, police in mississippi have made an arrest in the brutal murders of two nuns including one who grew up in stoneham, mass. >> this is 46-year-old rodney earl sanders now charged with stabbing two nuns to death in their rural mississippi home. police have hinted at evidence of a break-in but have not yet been specific about motive. the bodies of sister paula merrill a stoneham native, and her lifelong friend sister margaret held were discovered on thursday. after theful-year-olds didn't -- 68-year-olds didn't show up at the clinic where they worked. >> they actually spent their entire lives serving this community right here. i'm sure the community is completely devastated and grieving. >> indeed, for more than three decades, as seen in this video, the nuns worked as nurse practitioners helping patients in america's seventh poorest county providing low cost or free medical care and a place where 44% of the residents live in poverty.

instead hit the 32-year-old mother of four in the head and arm. she was not the intended target. that murder has become part of the presidential campaign. this afternoon, donald trump was campaigning in iowa but earlier, he tweeted about the murder. saying the shooting is a reason why african-american voters will back his campaign. the tweet brought about condemnation online from those saying trump was trying to politicize a tragedy. today, hillary clinton received her fit security briefing as the democratic presidential nominee. she met with intelligence staffers at the fbi office in white plains, new york. the briefing is customary for both major party presidential nominees. the libertarian ticket was in boston today for a campaign stop. gary johnson and former massachusetts governor bill weld held a rally on boston common this morning. weld delivered a fiery speech just steps from his old office

we have some cooler temperatures for the autumn lovers. >> something for everyone as they say right? >> exactly. and not a lot of rain though. so fortunately, the drought conditions continue and they're going taborsen this week and as we look at -- to worsen this week as we look at the forecast model but something we are tracking out in the tropics several disturbances now. we have now hurricane gaston which has strengthened back to a category 1 hurricane but an area of low pressure and also an area -- well, a low pressure. over cuba. and so first with gaston, that's going to continue to track out to sea. not a concern for us. this area of low pressure, over bermuda, could actually track towards the carolinas and we don't anticipate it becoming a tropical storm but it could bring some heavy rainfall to the outer banks in the next few days and we have invest 99l. this still disorganized but some of the forecast models putting it either through

have a big impact on some folks. big questions on this still, completely unsentiment. to be honest and hurricane hunters have planned another investigation. they're going to fly out there and try and see if there's any organized central part of that storm. because that's when we can get more specifics on the forecast models. stay tuned we'll update you. for us here in new england, the rain is going to be, the well not so much. monday, very slim chance for some rain. tuesy, wednesday, also a small chance. there's a chance, but very isolated. hour by hour timing overnight tonight, 7:00 a.m. sunday we start it off and all dry. all clear. and a few clouds pass through and the heat of the afternoon. overnight sunday into monday, maybe a spot shower but you can see anything that was green that popped up, very short- lived and monday evening, we're all dry. going into your tuesday. so the drought conditions continue. and they should worsen actually this next week. high temperature today was 83

temperatures have cooled back into the 70s and 60s and 71 degrees in boston and overnight tonight, dropping to 66 degrees with some areas of patchy fog under that mostly clear sky and your hour by hour forecast temperatures will be very pleasant to start off the day tomorrow. 78 degrees by 3:00. with some full sunshine and it looks like it's going to be fantastic beach day. oh a cooler on the coast. but it looks like we'll have some warmer temperatures inland with some mid- to upper 80s and your seven day forest ups and downs there. mondayed 0 muggy. chance -- 90 muggy and chance for the isolated shower and then up and down the next two days but canadian high pressure which is something some folks are hoping for, i mean -- we're getting close to labor day weekend? first half of it is going to feel like autumn. highs in the 70s and overnight lows maybe in the upper 40s? for some. second half of labor day weekend, i can tell you sunday monday we get warmer again. >> boy you drive by some of these rivers and ponds though.
