fire a charred shell barely standing. bright flames send black smokebillowing through the community as the fire spread from one house to the next. this morning neighbors say this could have been a whole lot worse if not for helping hands. jim smith has the very latest from plum island. >> reporter: fire crews work into the night soaking down hot spots hours after an inferno destroyed a home on plum island. thve saturday afternoon and it was roaring in no time at all leaving one home in ashes and badly damage willing two -- damaging two others. intense heat melting the siding. >> my mom's house is the house my brother and -- brother and i grew up in. >> reporter: they escaped dang thanks to napes and family. >> -- neighbors and family. >> it was not one house is everybody was caring about it was every one's houses and everyone pitched in and people grabbed hoses and buckets and

so lucky. kenny dorr's family hoe was ensign -- home was-sin rated -- was incinerated along with cars. >> it's very upsit setting to something like that happen and your house go up in flames. it's very surreal right now. it hasn't set in. tonight i will not go back to my house. >> reporter: the fire could be seen for miles around from land and sea. the damage is severe. but i credibly no one is hurt the neighborhood from going up in flames. >> mutual aid from as far south as middleton and north as the sea coast we appreciate the companies that did a great job in the heat and proud of all of them. >> reporter: very sad about the damage to this home but a great job by everybody involved and making sure that this fire did not spread even further. that includes an off-duty fire captain who lives on the street and sounded one of the firstalarms and a newbury

everybody was out safely. in plum island jim smith wbz this morning. in jamaica plain police are look foreperson who shot and killed man in a wheelchair. the shooting happened saturday right in front of the 7-eleven on center street. officers say the victim was targeted. and 18-year-old man -- an 18-year-old man from lunnenburg has died. the da's office says oughtin robbins was killed after the of control and struck several trees. a roadside memorial is growing on hollis road. many gathered to drop off flowers and cards and to take some time to reflect. the driver 19-year-old joseph kapp of gardner has been charged with drunk driving and motor vehicle homicide. in boston a string of violence is being tied to this weekend's caribbean festival. three shootings happened

refreshing up at baker lake. 64 degrees is the dew point in boston and it's got a dew point of 50 in the vineyard. lower 50s down there so a few cool pockets on the cape this morning. and meantime, we get 60s in some lower 70s with the dew points off to the south and west. and muggy air is going to get more humid today. already is so in boston of the upper 80s should do it away from the ocean near or under 80s. when you get a sea breeze when the water is so warm the sea breezes are and the air temperature is going to be pretty high across a good chunk of the nation in the low to middle 90s a little dry air that came in yesterday and made it so much more comfortable and the day before. this front is coming to the northeast and we have a front developing to the north that will change the air mass tomorrow morning the n -- morning. in the tropics i will watch the tropical disturbance that has signs of showing some signs of organization there and may move into the eastern gulf of mexico

very impressive satellite picture here of tropical storm irene. it was a strong tropical storm on this date five years ago when it came aboard around brooklyn new york and made landfall there in the morning and caused serious flooding. parts of new york state in western new england for sure and northern new england as well. that was tropical storm irene initially was a hurricane but that leads us to the trivia for this hour. which one of the follg andrew, eye wall, salver simpson scale tsunami which one doesn't belong to the other three. we will have that along with myaccu-weather forecast.

extremely dry. at 1.25 below average in boston. we have the big rain event last monday but we have had lot of dry days since then and looks like this is going to end up likely being the driest summer on record. summer being meteorological summer months of june july and august because we are at 3.92 and we are just a little bit under that 3.97 and that is the record setback in 1957. these are the current temperatures right now in the of0s -- 60s. there are a fe it's warm up to the southwest. and the air mass supports us going back into the 80s today like we have had so much of recently. and we are looking at upper 80s away from the ocean. dew points around 58 to 64 right now. so getting into the moderate humidity category and may bump up a little more later today and tonight as some of it comes from the southwest and into tomorrow morning it will be humid first thing tomorrow morning and it will dry out because the front will go through here.

coming to the feeders and i've been doing the same at my house with the drought i think they have been coming to the feeder more often. and the feeder i have had to refeed it quite a bit. here's the pollen over the next few days. we are right in the thick of the ragweed season going through the middle part of september. so either very strong medium high or into the high zone for the next several days ragweed. in boston it's up at 70 dew point at 65. it's more humid than it was yesterday and we had dew points mostly in the upper 50s and 60s. winds are light and will freshen up to 10 to 15 miles per hour may go southeast to south. boston upper 70s by the lunch hour and getting close to or a little over 80 around 2 to 3

theses are numbers close to or a little over 70 in few spots and dew points climbed and they are going to ramp up a tad more as we go through the day. but not getting to the levels we had a couple days ago when we had dew points of 71 to 74. it will be more noticeable later today and into tonight but it dries out during tomorrow morning. 86 to 88 should do it for high temperatures today. most places away from the ocean close to the coast 79 to 81. and with that southeast southerly a tide is high. it was a few minutes ago and is on its way out. next high tide about 8:50 this evening. and water temperatures continuing incredibly warm. i know that from yesterday. it's warm water out there. so we are looking at 74 degrees at first pitch temperatures tonight the game starts an hour later than usual at fenway park and should be fine at fenway park as we see some clouds from time to time today patches of clouds may develop here and

the front will come down but it's so weak it doesn't have much atmospheric support. there could be a brief shower or thunderstorm in a couple spots in the morning. the dry air takes over during tomorrow and becomes sunnier during the day and a nice night tomorrow night and tuesday, the air going to be nice and dry all day long. filled with sunshine and low temperatures tonight in the upper 60s almost 70. warmer than last night. and high temperatures tomorrow should be almost up to 90. in fact i wouldn't if the wind goes into the west northwest. it will be the 20th day this season if that happens, tomorrow afternoon maybe early in the afternoon hitting 90 before starting to go down. the front that's coming is here not producing much in the way of showers and storms but may produce a few isolated ones hate tonight. we will wap the -- watch the tropical disturbance around cuba to the florida straits because it is going to be entering into a favorable environment. this hurricane way out in the

there and move away from the bermuda at 600 miles east of bermuda but will track to have the northeast becoming a powerful hurricane at sea. we may see larger swells coming onshore at the new england coastline from gaston. and looking at that front coming through, maybe a couple scattered showers tonight and then it dries out with a wind brisk tomorrow. high pressure comes in for tuesday, nice dry air. next front approaches on thursday that may slow give us showery rains in new he canland on tuesday and -- new england on tuesday and it turns cool at the end of the week as we have a shot of polar air from canada. looks like temperatures will be in the lower 70s to mid-70s on friday. nice day coming up on saturday. not sure about the end of labor day weekend. we will tell you more about that later. >> sounds good.
