hurricane warnings are out there on either side. now tropical storm watches extend all the way up to atlantic city and coastal new jersey. much of the east coast is going to be dealing with strong winds from the storm. here's the track as we look through friday. moving its way through southeaster georgia and then right along the outer banks as we head into the start of the weekend. same story as yesterday. it's the is it a ulna happened south of -- it's the stall that happened south of long for about three or four days. so it will be a long time where it starts strong and gets weaker but will churn up surf. for friday, we're in the clear. we've got sunny skies tomorrow, beautiful day. saturday looks nice as well. if you have any plans to start the weekend, we should stay dry. it also looks like it will stay dry for a decent part of sunday

at this point. by late sunday, we'll pick up the winds, see the scattered showers and the highest part is labor day monday. the best chance of seeing a steadier, heavier rainfall is south eastern massachusetts, toward the cape, the islands, the south coast. as you head up across the northern parts of vermont, you won't see any at all or very little at that. rip currents, northeast gael chance of seeing rainfall. right now we want to take a look behind the scene gathering information about hermine. pamela gardner has more about that tonight. >> reporter: for the past week, we've been anticipating hurricane hermine now. we talked with the hurricane research scientists before the experience about flying over hermine last night.

sending it off the plane so that the forecasters and people who run forecast models have better information about what the hurricane is doing so they can make better forecasts. it can be very easy flights. they can be no turbulence at all. there could be pretty bumpy flights or feel like you are riding a roller coaster. some of the biggest bumps are like when you are a kid and you sit at the top of a sea saw and then someone on the drops you to the bottom. >> she says the storm reforms after it moves over florida next week, and she could be a part of that group that could go back to investigate it further. >> this is so important. people wonder how computer models work. they get better with good information put in at the start. pamela, thanks so much. >> thanks so much. people in florida's hurricane zone are being told to expect more than a foot of rain and maybe even tornadoes.

schools have been closed down. governor rick scott warned everyone to take the storm seriously. he says people should prepare for storm surges, heavy winds and power outages. people living along the gulf coast, we know they are ready for the worst. >> sandbags, you know, trying to get everything ready, you know, tied down, things moved, vehicles out. >> health officials are also concerned that the storm could actually hamper efforts to control the spread of virus. mosquitoes, of course, breed in standing water. there will be plenty of that once hermine passes. of course the weather team will be tracking hermine around the clock. they will be shaping updates by the cbs boston weather app on our facebook page, on twitter and our web site, cbsboston.com where you can get the latest tracking maps, video forecasts, and our weather team's blog. paula? david, we have breaking news in milford. a deadly hit and run near the police station in that town.

late this afternoon. the driver did not stop. so we have a crew on the way to the scene gathering information. we'll bring it to you as soon as we get it in to the newsroom. >> more breaking news now. a baby-sitter, police say, was drunk on the job. arlington police found the woman stumbling around the neighborhood when she was supposed to be watching a little boy. katie brace is live in arlington with the story. katie? >> reporter: paula, police say that the mom found the found that woman they say drunk and high on prescription drugs walking down the street with the toddler that she was supposed to be caring for. officers were called to eggertown road early yesterday morning afternoon for this woman stumbling down the street with a 3-year-old boy. neighbors saw her and thought something was wrong. she even tried to get into the wrong house. she is known to police for

property offenses. the child's mom started using her in the spring when she found her on care.com to find a baby-sitter. police are now warning parents who use the site. >> they used the site in the past. they were surprised. >> reporter: now, we reached out they are still waiting to hear back from them. the 3-year-old, good news, is okay. as for devereaux, she will be charged with reckless endangerment of a child. katie brace, wbz news. in peabody, a helicopter made an emergency landing at the town's water treatment plant. police say the privately owned helicopter suffered a mechanical problem but was able to land without issues. the helicopter will be repaired

see. a massive fireball on the launchpad at cape canaveral. a space ex rocket exploded. liam martin is here with the story. >> reporter: david, the explosion and loss of the rocket and satellite represent a major, if temporary, setback for space exploration. a test firing for space ex's falcon 9 rocket ended in a disasterrous explosion at cape canaveral. it was hauling a expand internet access into africa. >> it was a major loss for the owner of the amos 6 communication on board. thats what a $195 million satellite. that was destroyed. >> reporter: space ex released a statement saying there was an anomaly on the pad resulting in the loss of the vehicle and its pay load. it went on to say there were no injuries. the blast was felt miles away. billows of smoke pouring into the sky.

problems before. commercial space company is a critical partner for nasa. they carry supplies and equipment to the international space station. >> nasa has a $1.6 billion contract with space ex to launch dragon cargo ships to the international space station. >> reporter: the reusable rocket along with the dragon spacecraft are designed to transport humans into space as well and those flights were scheduled for next year. it's unclear how today's explosion will affect that flight schedule. the next flight to the international space station that space ex was supposed to take was scheduled for november. it looks like that will have to be placed on hold. paula? >> imagine how much money exploded right there. liam martin, thanks so much. it was all a misunderstanding. police in shirley say the man who approached a jogger was just trying to help the woman, not hurt her. >> reporter: an investigation into a suspicious man who approached a woman out for a

hoping. it turns out the driver was just trying to be nice. >> the good samaritan stopping because he thought the woman could use a bottle of water because she was jogging on a hot day. >> reporter: people in shirley were on high alert when a post warned people to be on the lookout for a man in a green van. a woman says she was jogging alone around 10:00 tuesday morning when a van drove toward her, forcing her off the road. her friend says what happened next raised red flags. when she was basking up to get away from -- she was backing up to get away from him, and there was someone in the back so she high tailed it and called authorities. >> reporter: the driver is a 70-year-old veteran who lives in town and transports handicapped people to medical appointments which was what he was doing at the time. >> the gentlemen he was transporting drinks a lot of water, and that's why there was water in the van. there was nothing more than that.

hermine hits florida but what's going to happen to us. >> people think of meteorologists as just the mereds, and we are, who -- just the nerds, and we are, just watching the clouds. we are regular people, too, who have plans trying to plan out saturday, sunday, and monday. we have a cold front, a few downpours. many are excited to see that in neighborhoods this afternoon. of course we have hurricane hermine, which is about to make landfall. we'll focus on that in a moment. we want to focus on a few downpours with thunder and lightning popping up as they move off toward the south and east. we've seen beneficial rainfall mixed in here. especially down toward the cape and a couple of downpours likely in the evening. one right now is moving its way down newburyport. also have heavier rains on the outskirts of lexington. maybe a little rumble of thunder in the line as it moves off toward the south and east.

next few hours and will dry out tonight. drier air moves in. in fact, tomorrow is a beautiful day. it will be a great september afternoon. we're looking at temperatures that will hover in the 70s as we move into lunchtime in the afternoon. we have bright skies and a gorgeous day to be in the outdoors. sunset at 7:16. high temps about 73 to 78 across the area which is where we should be for this time of year. now we talk about where hermine is headed. point in its life. you see the center of circulation lifting northward up toward apalachicola in florida. so the track takes this right along the eastern seaboard as we head toward saturday. the same idea into late saturday, sunday, monday, tuesday and wednesday of next week. it's going to get due east of atlantic city and stop. it's going to spin there for several days. as it spins, it will also weaken. what that's going to do is create a big opportunity to

lot of beach erosion, especially with long island to the mid-atlantic. planning out the weekend, tomorrow's nice. saturday looks nice as well. we'll see increasing cloud cover from south to north, but it is a dry day. even most of sunday could stay dry before our first rain showers start to lift up first along the cape, the islands and south coast. then they try to get inland, but i don't think they will make it to far. i'm not expecting a lot of rainfall north and west of boston. we'll lay out scenarios. the best case and this is the most likely scenario that we get some bands of rain into monday, and tuesday, the south coast, the cape and islands are most at risk to get heavier rain. but we want that rain. 20 to 40 mile-per-hour wind gusts. we'll get at least minor beach erosion out of this. the worsest case and most unlikely skin -- the worst case and most unlikely scenario
