. now at 5:30, tropical storm hermine on the move and could become a hurricane once again. >> it's expected to make a mess of the labor day weekend here in >> reporter: good evening, everybody. we are watching the storm for this weekend. looks like the stall is going to be just off to our south. the question is, how strong will the winds get? here are the latest stats on hermine. it's picked up a lot of speed, moving north and east. you can see this moving north and east at 20 miles an hour. tonight the biggest threat is

storm warnings, they extend well up the coast now and tropical storm watches as far north as coastal connecticut and long island sound, and we could see other warnings issued as well. we have this hugging the coast of enjoy new jersey. we'll see gusts up to 55 miles an hour, the strongest of which would be here in southeastern massachusetts and boston. we'll have rain into the night monday and tuesday but big rain may not be in the cards for us. this is going to ray at a time off the shoreline through thursday of next week. big big surbig surf and beach

concerns. some parents are now learning their kids are going to class more than 20 miles away from where they expected. a new school was supposed to open in brockton. instead students begin in norwood, at least 30 minutes away without traffic. >> reporter: dawn is packing up the van for labor day weekend, finally knowing where seventh grader morgan is going to class next week. >> we just want them to start learning. we don't care about the location. >> reporter: she thought she'd be attending this new charter school in brockton, but it's nowhere close to being ready. >> my opinion is, i think the town is making it difficult for the school. >> reporter: last week building inspectors slapped stop work signs on the windows, saying they were building with no permits.

especially when you're talking students and a school. there's no way to ensure the safety of anybody in that building without proper permits and proper inspections. >> reporter: the site of a former jewish school 22 miles away in norwood will be the location for w. from the charter school and affect class sizes at the new school. >> it's a real fly by night operation and i don't think they should be educating students. >> permits are minor. my child's mind is at risk. going to norwood, fine.

this is incredible video tonight as a driver loses control and goes right into a river in maine. >> take a look at the truck speeding off the road in maine, right into the driver never slows down and rolls right into the water. police say the 61-year-old driver had a medical emergency and someone nearby helped him get out safely. scary moments for a connecticut state trooper. he was driving southbound on i- 91 when a tanker truck changed lanes without signaling and a motorcycle moved into the trooper's path.

hit the center and spun out. thankfully he only suffered minor injuries. this was the view from berlin, new hampshire last night, you could see the northern lights there. beautiful images there. >> always amazing. hermine is heading up our way. i guess we should say just because it's not a hurricane technically at some doesn't mean it's not dangerous. >> reporter: it's interesting. if you look at the ocean temperatures and hurricanes, they feast on warm waters. in the gulf of mexico yesterday, that water was actually cooler than the water that's east of north carolina. so there will be a lot of energy there. even though it's becoming more of a nor'easter right now, i think it will go back to the tropical characteristics and

usually as storms move north, they get bigger and have a larger impact. take a look at the impact on the timing. last year it was all about the heat, scorching day. 67, windy with scattered showers and downpours here. a little different but maybe hang out and recharge on a long holiday weekend. hermine is a tropical you can see a very large system. the biggest threat in the short- term is flooding rain in north carolina. they could have over a foot of rainfall in 12 hours. that's as much as we have seen in months across the region. we have mainly clear skies, some clouds starting to float up. it will be a quiet night in terms of the forecast, temperatures falling back nicely into the 50s and low 60s after a pleasant september day.

in before the clouds march northward. good news on that front. overnight lows, plymouth 56 with a little coolness in the air. the heat is gone for the foreseeable future. we'll see the clouds thickening as the day goes on. this is a sign of changing weather, moving north ahead of tropical storm hermine. the timeline, tomorrow is a dry day for it will be brightest in northern new england. fabulous day there as a matter of fact. sunday a thicker cloud cover will develop. the rain will hold off till late sunday or monday. heading into monday and tuesday, this is our highest chance of showers swirling in and the highest chances of rain

of boston. sunday into monday, the winds will really start to crank up out of the east and northeast. there will be no guarantees when it comes to ferry service, so keep that in mind. boating will be very difficult. take a look to the north, better forecast. lakes region, heading up to the white mountains, it's dry and brig monday some showers making their way through. tomorrow looks fine but sunday will get windy, could be over 30 miles an hour in the afternoon. monday very windy, also with a chance of rain for the final day of georgia banks there. next week the system gets weaker but it's not going anywhere. we have showers, windy conditions on tuesday, more

tonight a lot of people are keeping an eye on this storm. >> you could see everyone heading in this direction today and wondering when the weather is going to go downhill. let's take a look at hermine, where it is right now and where it's going next. the latest advisory, a tropical storm racing north it will move off the carolina coast and then it will start to slow down. for the last couple days, we have been talking about this. it's going to take a left at enjoy new jersey and start to move our direction. it's a slow mover and that will be the biggest issue for a lot of people. we have high surf moving in,

going to start to pick up tomorrow evening on cape cod. the cape, the islands, this is where we have the highest impact, chance for over an inch of rain over boston. i'm not very optimistic because we need the rainfall in terms of our chances. wind gusts right now 35 to 55 miles an hour along the coast. typically that wouldn't cause a lot of damage but the tree easily broken. in south carolina it's been all about the rain and stronger winds at the coast this evening. the good news here, at least for south carolina, it's moving so fast, it will be gone by late tonight. in florida it came ashore. the first hurricane, almost 11 years in florida making rainfall. brought a lot of heavy rain and
