>> we've been tracking hermine. it's still spinning off the coast of the atlantic here. maximum speeds with 70 miles per hour. it's sale a cyclone, but it is strong enough just like a tropical storm. don't underestimate it just yet. it is well offshore moving east- northeast at 5 miles per hour. we expect it to move closer to the coast as we get into your labor day forecast. warnings are now in effect for all the mid-atlantic and up massachusetts. this includes cape cod, the south coast and the islands. we anticipate the conditions to be around for labor day into early tuesday, too. here's the track. tuesday at 2:00 p.m., still strong. wind gusts at the center, buts it's going to meander over the next couple of days and then the models do have it moving out by the end of the week.

wind gusts we're expecting late tonight into tuesday. we've already been experiencing some gusts about 30 to 35 miles per hour along the coast and the cape earlier today. heavy rains around an inch avenue accumulation. forecast models not giving us a lot of rain out of this system. they'll stay to our south and offshore. but also, we've been noticing the surf has been waves over the course of the next couple days. significant beach erosion as we go into the next couple of days and through your labor day forecast. coming up, temperatures go up. we'll see some 90s and when we kick this storm out of here in your 7-day forecast. people on the cape are getting ready for the storm conditions that will soon be moving in there. there will be very strong winds, high seas, and luckily

gets closer to the massachusetts coast. jim smith continues our team coverage now live. >> reporter: it's a gorgeous evening here. would you never realize a storm is approaching, but we are in for some big changes weather wise, and people are getting ready. >> i've seen a number of them over the years. this one doesn't seem like it's going to be particularly bad. >> reporter: a beautiful beaches. no hint of any approaching storm. but boats are being pulled out of the water. jeff brown says it was nice today, but beyond that, no guarantee. >> while there's no way i would want to be out here these next couple of days. if you had a boat, i would take it out. >> reporter: how rough do you think it's going to get? >> well, i think it's going to get to be enough to be concerned that you can't deal

the water tomorrow. >> reporter: by late afternoon, the wind was picking en even though it was sunny. eventually higher winds and heavier seas are forecast throughout the cape. it's labor day weekend, but ron decided to get his boat out. his take, no use taking any chances. >> we hauled the boat today, figured this pontoon boat is not really made for heavy weather, winds and so forth. so just as well to get it why wait until the wind pushes it around? >> reporter: back here live, take a good look at that. that is the sunset. it might very well be the last time we see the sun for a number of days, at least down here on the cape and in southeastern massachusetts as we're bound to feel the effects of this approaching storm. but as you can see, here on buzzards bay, here on the cape, it was a delightful day. we'll see what the rest of the

was fatally injured. this was the scene. we're still getting more information on what exactly went wrong there. police are trying to identify a body pulled from the muddy river under the overpass. they found the man around 2:00 this afternoon. medical personnel were at the scene. investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding his death. this is day two of tom brady's suspension if you're keeping track. his teammates don't have the sports director joins us now with the patriots tribute to their missing quarterback. steve. >> you're going to love this. tom brady can't step in the stadium until october 3rd. this is on both sides of the lighthouse at the north end of the stadium. his image can be seen from inside and outside the stadium. probably a safe bet the league won't like this.

a student fought off an attacker when he broke into his austin apartment. >> a person called in through a window. paul burton reports it ended with the suspect using pepper spray on police. >> ask he climbed through and he jumped and then he says go. >> reporter: he was in his bedroom when out of nowhere a man broke into his apartment by crawling through his window in austin. >> i tried to stop him. i pushed him back. then he grabbed me like this. >> reporter: peter says they fought for three minutes before the suspect ran out of his room

approached the man who began spraying pepper spray at police. >> i heard this guy cursing. >> reporter: he may have been living behind his apartment. >> he seems like he had psychological problems. >> reporter: police chased him down a back alley. they arrested him. mean wheel, he just want to be -- meanwhile, i just wants to lock his window and be safe. police say this man had been eluding them for some time. he faces a number wbz news. austin was also crawling with city housing and fire inspectors as college move-in enters the homestretch. this was day four. officials say schools staggering their start days and better cooperation for landlords have made for a smoother process. there have been fewer tenant complaints. fire safety remains a focus.

lot of the clouds didn't go as far north. that storm sat out east in the sea and so forecast has changed just a little bit, but the impact is still the same here in new england and tonight into monday, heavy rain and flooding. there's that potential. isolated flood threats if we get a got thunderstorm over one particular area. that's mainly going to be in southeastern massachusetts. damaging wind threat is there, too, with between 35 and up to 60 miles per hour. the trees are weak and they may come down because of the winds. the coastal flood threat not quite there. you've already noticed the waves are rocky out there and

videos. hermine, there it is, the latest right now shows us way off the coast. 70 miles per hour winds through the east-northeast at 5 miles per hour. and we still have some tropical storm warnings in effect. now for all of the new england at least along the coast, is the and eastern parts of new england and the track shows this changed a little bit. we expect it to weaken by the afternoon to tropical storm status. 50 miles per hour winds then. but close enough to new england that they're going to meander through tuesday at least and then by getting out of our hair. wave heights right now are interesting. where we see the center of the storm, that's where we have wave heights of 20 to 22 feet. 11 foot wave height there off long island. then as we get closer to new england, we're getting three or four foot waves. they will increase over the next 24 as that storm lifts to the north. winds picking up, 22 miles per hour gusts in plymouth and can

east. nantucket, 30 miles per hour wind gusts. tonight to tuesday, 35 to 40 miles per hour gusts over boston. a little less wind north and west. 60 miles per hour gusts on nantucket. we'll see about that one. coastal impact, building seas and surf, 15 to 20 foot waves. dangerous rip current and beach erosion. hour by hour, i want to show you th we're wanting a good soaking rain, but it doesability like like we're going -- doesn't like like we're going to get it in all spots. we have a couple of outer bands of rain moving our way. moving to the north and west. perhaps boston could see a good soaking rain before they fizzle out as they continue to the north and west. inland, it doesage like lie -- doesn't look like we'll have a

showers for tuesday. still stay tuned much we'll keep you up to date as we update the forecast. heavy chances in southeastern massachusetts around an inch of accumulation over the next couple days. frost models agreeing with most of the heavy rain will stay to the south and east. temperatures right now are very pleasant. we reached the low 70s. we'll dip back into the 60s because of that storm and then tomorrow, it will be cool we temperatures in the 60s. much different compared to last year on labor day. it was 93, sunny, beautiful, summer like. more fall-like for this labor day. and a little bit of a difficult forecast, too. for tuesday, we'll still keep some showers and wind in the forecast and then forecast models have it moving out quicker. wednesday is looking okay. we have a big warm-up. we might be tracking our next

the red sox wrapped up on the diamond. >> they came this close sweep. >> it was like this close. red sox looking for a sweep this afternoon in oakland with rodriguez on the mound. he was absolutely outstanding. but -- here's the but -- they lost 1-0. he took a no-hitter into the 8th inning. here's a shot back to the mound. he kicks it, picks it up. throws to first, that's the hit.

intense conditions with storm warnings in effect. that's all through southeastern parts of massachusetts, too. this is a live look at the waves. you can see the ocean is churning and it's going to continue to churn away. beach erosion, the rip currents, that's all going to be in place. dangerous conditions along the beaches and the coast there. unfortunately in final for labor day, the holiday. temperatures will be slightly cooler, too, with that on shore wind. northeast tonight. gusts up to 50 miles per hour. but tuesday, same deal. a few showers and windy with rain totals maybe around an inch of accumulation in southeastern massachusetts, but it all depends on where the heavy rainbands set up. wednesday into thursday and friday, we get the storm out of here and we warm back up into the 90s for the end of the week. >> thanks so much. we thank you for watching.
