live from the channel 4 studios in boston, this is wbz news at 11:00. >> a taste of hermine is arriving tonight along the cape and the south coast of massachusetts. tropical storm warning is posted along the water. on the cape, the winds are picking up in places like can expect to see high seas and rough surf. and winds along the cape could reach 55 miles per hour. good evening, everyone. i'm katy. >> i'm k companies are ready for downed trees and power outages. jim smith is live for us tonight, but we begin with meteorologist pamela garter. and already the wind is starting to pick up on the cape. actually just had an e-mail from larry. he says the wind is starting to get up there just a little bit, but the clouds starting to move in, too. we had a gorgeous afternoon today. now, the changes move into tonight and monday. the impact from hermine tonight into monday afternoon will be heavy rain from time to time. localized flooding, if we can get a brief heavy downpour,

thunderstorm xhans. damaging wind, too, as things have become weakened by the drought conditions. the trees, the limbs could topple over, and we could have scattered power outages, as well. coastal flood threat is going to stay mainly across coastal connecticut and rhode island, but erosion will be the main impact that southeastern massachusetts and southeastern new england will experience. here it is, still max winds of 70 miles per hour. this thing just won't stop moving north-northeast at 3 miles per hour, nearly stationary now, but it will north-northwest, and that's why we have tropical storm warnings in effect for the south coast, cape cod, the islands, and just a very southern edge of plymouth county, too. here's the latest track of hermine. monday, 8 p.m., just to our south, then starts to take a turn to the north and east, by late tuesday, weakening to 45 mile per hour wind gusts. that's a good thing. then it starts to move offshore and way out of our area here by the end of the week, but the

next 24 hours after midnight tonight going into monday afternoon. we have that threat of 35 to 55 mile per hour wind gusts along the coastline, and another secondary wind threat, though not as high for tuesday, but it will be there, scattered tree power line damage across the south coast, and isolated downed tree limbs inland and also to the northwest as we could see wind gusts between 15 and 35 miles per hour. keep in mind, as we get these 45 to 55 mile pes h directly from the north and east. heavy rain chances are also a possibility. to the south and east, around 1 inch of accumulation, but through tuesday. so we'll get some waves of rain here and there, but it's going to take some time to get some of that rain into the area with that rain arriving by mid-morning tomorrow. and labor day comparison, going to be much different this year compared to last year. we had 93 degrees, and it was dry. this year, 69 degrees, and we're

windy. come lg up, more hour by hour timing on the rain and check out what's ahead in your 7-day forecast. >> look forward to it. thanks so much, pamela. frms several beaches as you can imagine are closed and boaters spent the day taking their boats out of the water as effects from hermine hits the case. >> wbz's jim smith is live tonight where the wind has just started to pick up in the last few hours or so. jim, what can you tell us? >> yes, indeed, ken, you are correct. the wind is picking up even as we speak in a waves are also getting larger down here. it's really interesting. all day long on sunday here on cape cod, it was absolutely beautiful weather wise, which was good news because that gave everybody time to get ready. >> by sunday night, the surf was building in sandwich. choppy waves combining with a steadily-intensifying wind. conditions were changing by the minute. the storm's impact finally being

concerns about what's to come. >> some of these houses down here may get some flooding. >> looks like the wind has picked up in the last hour or so. >> it has. it's been here about an hour, and now, we're chilly. >> it was busy in bourn, and many other seaside towns earlier as people got their boats onto shore ahead of the heavy weather. >> well, there's no way i'd want to be out here after today. the next couple days, you don't want to be anywhere near this place. if you had a boat on the mooring, i'd probably try and take it out. >> it was n became obvious that things were changing. even the bigger boats were coming out. >> we hauled the boat today. figured this pontoon-style boat is not really made for heavy weather, winds and so forth, so just as well to get it out. why wait until the wind pushes it around? >> back at sandwich, no rain yet, but the wind was already howling, just a preview, though some are hoping the cape escapes with only moderate impact. >> i don't know.

and it sounds like it's just not going to be as bad as everybody is predicting. i mean, we've been down here a good part of the day, and the waves definitely have been high. >> back here live now in sandwich, no matter how big this storm is or how close it comes, there will certainly be impacts like those high winds, the heavy seas, rip currents, undertoe, beach erosion. so it's a storm that will certainly have a big imact down here. it should be an interesting week to say the least. live in sandwich, jim jim, thanks. a cruise ship from boston pulled out of port friday night heading for bermuda. so far, no reports of any problems on board. the company tells us it is monitoring the storm with state of the art radar. eversource is ready to deal with the storm. the company says extra crews and support staff are already in place and ready to respond to power outages or damage. eversource also alerted all of its employees to be on standby.

sea. still, some threats from hermine remain, as wendy gillette reports. >> the dog days of summer are still hanging around in belmar, despite hermine lingering a few hundred miles offshore. the storm is bringing crashing waves to the jersey shore and as far south as virginia. only perfect conditions for surfers. >> you can be up to your knees. if a wave knocks you off your fite -- feet and you get caught in a rip, you can be troublesome. >> that's day, warning of the dangers. life guards are patrolling the beach along with uniform police officers. swimming is not allowed. edgar rivera is only allowing his five-year-old daughter, sophia, to wade up to her niece. >> do you feel the pull of the water when you're in? >> yeah, you do. you actually feel it. you got to be careful. >> the storm could also cause severe beach erosion. workers in belmar built these over the weekend to protect an area devastated by sandy in

that machine. wbz's sean is live at the scene tonight. >> katie, this is a sad day for the relatives of that construction worker. boston police say he was working on his crane right here behind me. they say he was disassembling it when he fell. >> a construction site beside the institute is now the center of an osha investigation. earlier during sunday afternoon, boston police say a construction rescuers responded to the intersection in the longwood area. he was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. wbz has since learned that the name of the construction company is halomor corporation. we reached out. no word yet from the company, but the state department of labor released a statement saying osha responded and begun an investigation. it will seek to determine if any workplace safety standards were violated. >> and back out here live, as far as the victim's name and

released. this is all information that we're working to bring you as soon as we get it. for now u live in boston, wbz news. berming frz -- birmingham state police officer is off the job accused of inappropriate conduct. the officer was arrested and charged with several crimes including witness intimidation. the police is investigating now. the university says it was an isolated incident. boston police made an arrest for hit-and-run crash. 39-year-old anthony buchanan of dorchester actually surrendered about 1 a.m. police say buchanan had been drinking when he plowed into 46-year-old sims of dorchester as she was walking along morton street. police found buchanan's rented dodge charger two miles away. police are trying to identify the body of a man pulled from a muddy river this afternoon. state police, boston ems, and medical examiner's office were

specifically, you have been tracking hermine, so what can we expect as we get into this labor day? >> okay. now, we're really going to start to feel the effects of hermine here as it inches a little bit closer to us. it's going to move to the north and feel the wind picking up overnight into tomorrow and also could see rain bands out of this, too, which is beneficial to us because we need the rain. we're in drought conditions. not going to be a drought buster by any means, but we'll take what we can get. hermine still spinning atlantic. winds still 70 miles per hour. still pretty strong here. 3 miles per hour, and the latest on the tropical storm warnings here, they have actually been expired and cancelled for the jersey shore, but they have been extended here. tropical storm warning in effect for the south coast of new england onto cape cod, the islands, and for the extreme southern parts of plymouth county. we're anticipating the track of the storm to gain a little bit

8 p.m., notice, it does weaken to 65 mile per hour max wind speeds, then it takes a slight turn to the northwest briefly, and then tuesday, all of a sudden, it shoots back to the northeast and weakens then, as well. 45 mile per hour wind gusts. latest forecast models have it out of our area by the end of this week, and then a big change in your 7-day forecast. but we have to get through the next 24 to 48 hours or so, and it's going to be a little rough for some. sustained wind speeds right now between 5 and 15 miles per hour. only gusts i saw just when i checked a few minutes ago found 21 miles per hour. the wind does pick up overnight tonight into tomorrow night. 35 to 45 mile per hour combuss -- gusts from boston. lesser wind to the north and west but higher wind speeds tot south and east. 45 to 55 mile per hour gusts, and that could lead to some tree damage and scattered power outages. hour by hour with the rain, the showers hold off, actually. you'll notice the clouds increase from south to north

showers move in late monday morning into monday afternoon. 4 p.m., notice periodic waves of rain here as the system still spins to our south. it could spin up a couple thunderstorms and maybe some brief heavy downpours, but otherwise, most of the day, especially farther north and west, will be dry, and the projected rain fall is pretty good over the ocean, but we need it here on land. we're just not going to get it. maybe 1 to 2 inches of rain accumulation, and the farther southeast you go, the better chance of getting the hr we are going ultimately around an inch of rain in southeastern massachusetts with maybe a half an inch of rain. now, the wave heights are going to continue to build, as well, as this storm continues to churn out at sea. some of the buo ys are recording 10 to 14 foot waves with a 12-foot wave south of buzzard's bay here. 3 to 4 feet off the coast of boston. as we get into monday and actually high tide in the afternoon, around 2:30 p.m., we could see some wave heights

off the coast here, and even about 10 to 15 foot waves on the outer cape. that's going to lead so some of the beach erosion, and the waves will be pretty high even into monday night. so we're talking about the storms still to our south, building season starts through tuesday, 15 to 20 foot waves potentially dangerous rip currents and significant beach erosion. satellite and radar shows no rain just yet but the clouds are building from our south and from our east, and soon, the rain, oh, it's so close yet so far. the south coast. temperatures right now in the 60s and 50s. a gorgeous night. a gorgeous weekend around so far, but labor day taking a turn for the worst, and, yes, temperatures will be -- tomorrow will be cooler in the 60s and probably want to open the windows and enjoy, but it's going to be very, very windy. you might see a brief heavy downpour, too. keep that in mind if you do have the windows open, especially along the coast, too chl we could see minor splashover from
