beaches and create hazardous surf conditions. we have tropical storm warnings continuing for southeastern massachusetts, the coastal waters, getting to long island as well. the latest stats, strong winds around its center. we are just getting clipped. that periphery of the strongest winds and storms at 70 miles per hour near the center of it moving to the west northwest at seven further to the west of that retro grade that we talked about. it'll back its way more toward long island. there you see the current gusts. it's been windy around the boston area, but the real wind is the south shore and the cape. we have also been tracking some of that rainfall and rain has been increasing wind gusts. we are also looking at those wave heights. you see it's rocking in the

as we had to the next couple days, not anticipating a lot of change when it comes to the ocean itself. in terms of rainfall, hoping for more widespread rain but a lot of it confined to this part of the area. pamela garden has a look at the radar and when we can expect some of that rain. over the next 24 to 48 hours, more of these rain bands shifting for the to the north and west. op into plymouth county and along the south shore. nothing too heavy just yet. most of the heavy rain continues to spin across cape cod and along the islands from martha's vineyard there. steady rain and lightning and thunder well offshore but no thunderstorms on land at this time. projected rainfall overnight tonight, more bands start to spin up to the north and west and we could see around a half inch up to an inch and a half of rain accumulate.

we have been talking about the last several days. lesser rain amounts further to the north and west. you may be lucky to get up to a half inch of rain just to the north of boston and even for cape and. southeastern massachusetts getting most of the rain. projected ring gusts still will be strong. pushing 40 miles per hour by tuesday morning. things start to subside slightly but still rather gusty from time to time. because the wind gusts could be strong enough tonight, we may be dealing with additional damage reports. >> reporter: the peak of the storm is strength, and then it will slowly we can over the next couple days to be a gradual process. we talked about how drought may weaken some of the trees. we've had reports of damage. we turn things over to taunton to sean tae. >> reporter: cruise on washington street just left. i want to show you the tree that actually fell. it's right beside me.

it are actually down here. it was cut off by cruise on the sidewalks, scattered on the streets, but another place it fell was actually on power lines. but that did is cut off electricity to this neighborhood. strong winds topple trees onto power lines cutting electricity between washburn, grant, and taunton. neighbors are to use extreme caution after two trees fell within a half hour. the agency says it will not take mucr condition. as this guy. he should know. after getting out of his pickup, he turned around to this. i heard a loud bang and then i turned around, looks, and the whole tree was on top of my truck. >> what went through your mind? >> it -- i thank god i wasn't in it. >> that was manwell loebs. that tree fell on his car on johnson street.

thank you for the update. big holiday weekend. everyone wants to come to the cape and islands and go back and forth. a lot of disruption with the ocean looking like this. most of those fairies have not been running at all. jim smith picks up our story there. >> reporter: as you might expect, it's been quite busy here at the terminal here at woods hall. believe it or not, trips taking place right now back-and-forth. the 2:00 ferry gliding into woods hole. the big making the trip across the sound. arriving passengers have never been happier to get off the vineyard. >> how relieved are you that this wasn't canceled? >> there have been a lot of cancellations. there was a lot of people in

>> this is the scene on the island of nantucket where the storm forced the cancellation or suspension of a number of trips on a number of different fairy lines. conditions out there even worse, but as far as the vineyard goes, not quite as bad. >> were you concerned at all about the heavy weather? >> i don't really like it when it's choppy. we had a couple other girls in our group that were feeling seasick. >> you made it. >> laboda for this boat load but they are on dry land safe and sound. >> this is lucy. she's holding onto me like a monkey, so she is miserable. >> i'm sorry, lucy. we are all sorry, lucy. look at that phase. >> everyone is looking forward to going home. >> there you have it. lucy had a long day. a lot of people had a long day. as far as trips, they are taking place, which is obviously good

but the steam ship authority, i checked their website and they announced that they have suspended all of today's remaining service from the island of nantucket. that's a reflection of just how rough the conditions are out there. jim smith, wbz news. back to eric. thank you. i saw the highline tweeted there nantucket cruise is canceled as well. just trying to everyone is safe. unfortunately, there's probably some more disruption in the next couple days and it'll take a long time to unwind some of the wave action as this storm spins off to the south. we send it back to the studio. we have some of the storm tourists out here and one yelled, where is shelby scott? you know it's official. >> we did check a couple years ago and last time we checked, she was living in arizona. probably no big waves behind her. >> enjoying retirement. we do have some breaking night -- news tonight.

crews cleared the tree that hit the overhead wires on the tracks at woodland station. service is still shut down between nuke -- newton highlands and riverside. and the labor day exodus on the cape started early today. traffic maps show life conditions. as you can see, there is really no red at all on the map. it turns slightly yellow as you approach the bridge, but not too bad. early in the day, there was a 10-mile backup right now. a 20-mile backup coming out of maine at new hampshire. that's where the traffic is this afternoon. our weather tenets all over the storm to keep you informed. several ways for you to keep up- to-date. check out our weather app, facebook page, twitter, and our website cbsboston.com. this breaking news in halifax. a big house fire on thompson street. this is affecting people long after those claims are out.

>> reporter: thankfully, no one was hurt. one firefighter was transferred to the hospital with smoke inhalation but he's expected to be okay. crews slowly wrapping up after a very, very stubborn fire that swept through a home here on thompson street about 100 yards back from the street here. basically, knocked out now, but earlier it was cooking. crews responded around 1:00 after several passersby called in. they found through the rear of that house. as i said, thankfully, no one was home at the time and not one firefighter is -- that one firefighter is expected to be okay. one of the reasons it was so stubborn is because it had a set of unique challenges, including the wind. a couple things played a factor. the driver is several -- driveway is several hundred feet long. establishing a water supply was the initial issue.

conditions made it difficult. >> at this before, they are trying to figure out where that fire started. it appears it did start in the back of the home and that is the area that is at a loss. thankfully, the entire home is not a loss. all of this still under investigation. wbz news. also breaking, discovered a molotov cocktail on his front lawn. investigators say someone left that device on the property early yesterday. nobody was hurt. police are sure yet if the person who left it knew that the person who owned the home as a police officer. framingham state university police officer banned from campus. this is the picture of them all tough cocktail from the last story. more on this police officer. police arrested wilt or norma bill on several charges, including opening gross lewdness

administrative leave. school officials say it's an isolated incident and there's no threat to the university. a born police officer recovers after an early morning crash. that officer was driving on norris road when another driver ran a stop sign, slammed into the cruiser. the 23-year-old driver, a woman, was also hurt. police cited her for speeding and missing that stop sign. both she and the officer are expected to be just fine instrument campaign 2016, and bernie sanders was in new hampshire the labor day breakfast in manchester and stumping for hillary clinton. the first presidential debate between clinton and donald trump is september 26th, three weeks away. catching a suspected hit and run driver. coming up, how people who saw the crash kept that woman from getting away. plus, replacing a local landmark. what could eventually be in the building that houses the iconic curious george bookstore.

pictures of seeing how hermine is kicking up the waves. these pictures come from kings beach. boy, it's been a while day there on the ocean. interesting. i live in metro west and just a picture-perfect day. i am thinking >> i know you are on the beach in orleans where it's very stormy. the line must be pretty clear tonight where the hurricane is affecting people and where it isn't. >> reporter: lisa and david, it's amazing. i started the day in boston as well where it's a beautiful afternoon. you come to the southeastern part of the state and you get into the clouds and rain bands. it reminds people of a blizzard we had back of march 2014. the sun was shining in boston

you see those dunes. actually, this is some of the worst in terms of rainfall we've had since we got here. big-time surf. that is the main story as we watch the storm turn over the next few days. let's look at the satellite picture, where hermine is and where it's going as we make our way into the next couple days. today started that drift off toward the north and west. so it's taking a movement now that's a little more that is going to help keep rain in play for us as we head into the next couple days. scattered showers continue to rotate around it as it moves its way slowly and slowly blows itself out as well. taking a look at what we have in terms of radar, you see that squall line moving across cape cod right now. these tropical bands continue

from a wind perspective, the strongest when the further south you go. nantucket gusting to 58. 48 at the airport. enough for scattered pockets of damage. in line with expectations so far. here you see some of the gusts currently. 32 beverly right now for a peak gust, and providence a 40-mile per hour gusts. it's windy for sure. it's not a major event for us in terms of the strongest winds we see bu issues. localized flash flooding on roads especially toward the cape and the islands. nantucket has picked up over an inch of rain. mine are coastal flooding. fortunately, for us all this happening as tides are lowering astronomically. we are not at peak tied for the month and that will limit coastal flooding concerns even with a slow-moving storm. it's really about the erosion and the rough surf. tonight scattered showers especially to the southeast and along the coastline. overnight lows at 62 degrees.

skies, the drier the air, and less the wind. tomorrow a similar day. we'll see a lot of clouds around rotating in. a few showers scattered about. temperatures will be on the cool side. not terribly cold. it's the same idea. further north and west of boston, brighter skies, warmer temperatures, the closer to the coastline you go. they will still be quite dusty as we look into tuesday. here is hour by hour. a storm spinning its way al weaker over time each day but that continuous onshore flow will keep us the -- with that chance of showers. in fact, will probably continue to increase as we head into tuesday and wednesday. as the storm pulled away, we bring in the heat. a chance at 90 degrees before the week is done, believe it or

us. ridge of high pressure building overhead. if the storm wasn't so close to the coastline, we'd already be spiking well into the 80s. it will keep the heat at bay as we head toward to the end of the weekend. here's your accuweather 7-day. still some are showers and gusty winds. thursday the storm. look at the 90s on friday and saturday as we start the weekend. summer heat moving back in. as soon as the storm can get off the coastline, it's just going to be a very slow process you back out here live, hoping the waves don't chew up too much of the shoreline. all of the vacationers have departed. if you are looking for a few more beach days, >> i'm hoping for you that the snack bars will still be open. >> i looked at the ice cream list. it looks pretty appealing right now. >> thank you. this is a crime like no other. a break in that included a painted dog and a stolen car. this happened in oak plus down on the vineyard. police say this man right here broke into a home on saturday afternoon, stole several items, and then painted the family dog

crashed it, and when officers found him, he had purple paint on his hands. police also tied ragan to several other burglaries on the island. >> that's highly unusual. before long, we could pay more for beer, wine, and spirits in boston. the globe is reporting that two city counselors wanted to percent tax on all alcohol sold in the city. if that passes, the average ac cents more. if the tax revenue is added, alcohol taxes could raise more than $20 million per year. people who can identify specific smells and flavors in wine may also be helping alzheimer's patients. >> researchers set out to learn by the sense of taste and smell is so keen and wound up with what could be a breakthrough discovery. >> reporter: harley has developed an almost superhuman sense of smell over the years. >> identifying the different

it a fruit, is it not a fruit? >> as a wine connoisseur, he can detect almost any ingredient in a glass of wine. >> dry roses potpourri, very floral. >> research shows that keen sense of smell has developed his brain. >> there's a lot more activity. >> dr. sarah banks did brain scans on 13 sommeliers and 13 non-experts as they smell various sense fruits. she found the wine experts could detect sense that the others could not, but she also discovered parts of their brain are bigger, including areas susceptible to alzheimer's. >> the fact that the parts of the brain that are bigger are those parts that are most vulnerable to alzheimer's and parkinson's bodes pretty well. it suggests they might help in the degree of protection. >> developing our sense of smell with mine or anything else might be key in growing our brains to prevent disease.

this week the developers asking the historical commission for permission to turn the building that houses a curious george store into part of the mall. these plans would replace the curious george store with a building lobby, stairway, and elevator that was stirred as an entrance to the three-story harvard collection.

live from the channel 4 studios in boston. this is wbz news at 5:30 now at 5:30, rough waves rocking the new england coast. check out the surf in rhode island. hermine spinning in the atlantic and moving closer to us. we have this breaking news. strong winds have taken down trees, knocking them onto power lines. people in that city are being warned to be careful. the drought has made those trees

fisher is out seeing conditions firsthand. how is it looking right now? >> reporter: it's pretty rough. it's a whole different world. in my town, we've had blue skies. you come to the cave, the winds have been routinely gusting over 40. nantucket they've been gusting over 50. crews making sure people are safe. those wa let's look at the headlines. the storm is starting to make its closest path. it's also at its peak intensity here. through tonight, we'll get strongest wind gust and slowly over the next few days will start to see winds subside. it's a very slow process for us. in terms of rainfall, the best chances will be in southeastern massachusetts. not expecting much north and west of boston even through tomorrow and wednesday. scatter shower or two. for the coastal impact, we've got huge waves offshore. the big ones reaching the beaches.
