this has been producing pockets of damage out there. it's also been bringing beneficial rain. it's ugly but we need it. pamela gardner is tracking some of the rain bands that have been moving ashore. >> reporter: we do need it because we've been in drought conditions for quite some time. finally, the rain starting to push toward boston with those heavier bands right over the cape, the islands, and even pockets of torrential downpour's, but some of those showers starting to push across the south shore. not a drought buster, but we will take but we can get here. lesser amounts for the to the north and west. you may be lucky to get up to a half inch of rain. through tuesday, maybe some isolated locations getting one to 2 inches of rain but primarily to the south and

evening, and for the early part of tonight. 51 miles per hour projected wind gusts on the vineyard. between 35 to 45 miles per hour for the wind, but noticed tuesday things start to quiet down a bit. the wind whipping out there but not quite as bad. damaging wind threat will be done for tuesday. tonight we still could be tracking the potential for some damaging wind gusts. more on that, eric. >> reporter: is interesting. we talked about the drought and how the trees have had a really rough year. they are ea now. even inland away from the coast, we have seen damage throughout the course of the day. >> this is actually destruction from a tree that fell from strong winds. this fence is where the tree fell. this is actually where it fell. it will show you even more debris on the sidewalks.

street still. earlier, the street was shut off to fix powerlines because this tree also fell on that cutting off electricity to this neighborhood. >> i said, thank god i wasn't in there. >> stepping out of his truck on johnson street. >> i happen to be walking in the garage. i heard a loud bang, and then i turned around, looked, and the whole tree was on top of my truck. >> worked to restore power to this neighborhood on washington street. a tree fell on a power line cutting off electricity. emergency management urges neighbors to use extreme caution after two trees fell within a half hour. the agency says it will not take much for trees to come down because of the current drought conditions. in new bedford, this delightful fell down on 195 west. >> there was also a tree that fell down in westport. we'll bring you the latest information as it becomes

wbz news. eric, back to you. >> reporter: dash -- it's a long holiday weekend. everyone heads to the cape and islands. the problem is getting off of the islands and moving back-and- forth with waves like this. there have been some disruptions on and off. a look at that end of the story in our storm coverage. we have jim smith. >> reporter: trip back and forth between the islands and the mainland has just gotten even more difficult. we have some breaking news in the past couple minutes. we are hearing that service now between martha's vineyard and woods hole and back and forth between the two destinations has been canceled for the rest of the night because of these deteriorating conditions. up until now, they were able to get back and forth.

lousy conditions. heavy seas along the coast, whitecaps and waves creating a real challenge for anybody out on the ocean. that includes ferry passengers from martha's vineyard arriving at the steamship authority dock in woods hole, happy to have made it safely even though labor day weekend ended early. >> it was sad to cut it short, but i was nervous we would be stuck out there until thursday. i'm happy we got back. >> we made it. >> >> on nantucket, conditions were even worse. so bad that fairy trips were canceled on a number of different lines. and back at the woods hole terminal, there were challenges as well. >> that's where our car is. all of the fairies back on the highline were canceled. we were able to get on this one. but our car is in hyannis, so now we are trying to get a cab but we can't get a cab. >> but at least they are back in the mainland making the crossing despite rough

up a little more. it wasn't as bad as everyone thought it was going to be. >> it was incredibly calm. it was strangely calm in the wind was blowing and it was lovely. obviously, not lovely now out on nantucket sound, because repeating the news that we just got from a number of sources here, all remaining trips to and from martha's vineyard here have now been canceled. that goes along with the earlier decision that st today's remaining service between nantucket and the mainland. so right now it looks like the weather is getting an upper hand. jim smith, wbz news. let's take it back now to eric. thank you for the update there. we have warned everyone, try to make sure everyone planned for that. get off the islands in time for things. it was when gusts around 60 miles per hour on the island, difficult time for the fairies. there may be more disruption headed into tomorrow as the winds are still blowing and the seas are very rough.

investigators say someone left the device on the property early yesterday morning. the good news here is that no one was hurt. the suspect is still out there tonight as police investigate whether they targeted the police officers home on purpose or not. >> we have this breaking news in halifax. crews are clearing the scene of a big house fire on thompson treat. this is a fire that broke out this afternoon and because this house had such a long driveway, it was hard for firefighters to get water to the home windy conditions out there didn't help either. firefighters don't think anyone was home. one firefighter was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. up on a rooftop, but it wasn't christmas in september. this was a robber who forced police to jump from roof to roof to catch up with him. paul is live at the story on that at the clock. >> reporter: this is a bizarre story. right now we don't know what this guy was thinking as he went from rooftop to rooftop

it was just crazy. not only that, he was yelling and screaming and causing quite the scene. police were able to nab this guy quickly. >> reporter: she was at home with her husband in the north end when police say damien tejada of new york tried to break into their apartment by scaling walls and climbing on nearby rooftops. her husband asked the man to leave. >> he starye danger and some nonsense and tried to open the window. we have two windows, so he opened the first one and i guess he started pushing on the other one and my husband held the window so it wouldn't break. >> he eventually attempted to break into several other apartments on north martin street, again, by jumping to another rooftop. >> i think it's crazy. >> he was yelling some stuff. he thought he was in the bronx

-- searched other rooftops. they eventually found him inside one of the other apartments. >> we have had drunk people on the roof before so i didn't think anything of it until he started pushing on the window and then i guess someone must've yelled at him, distracted him, and he started talking to them and stomping on the skylight and banging on the window again. >> some neighbors are deeply concerned about the incident. >> it just seems really unusual. >> it's scary to think someone might be doing that. >> number of charges, including two counts of breaking and entering, but no one was injured or assaulted in any attempts. i'm paul burton, wbz news. the family of a framingham man shot during a drug raid has settled its wrongful death lawsuit. you may remember back in 2011, the 68-year-old was shot lying on the floor with his hands up as officers worked to secure the scene.

our stormont continues tonight. these are life pictures from orleans. what a different scene really all over the state but right there along the coastline people have been gathering because there's just something about seeing the storms.

the waves were big enough that people weren't allowed to go in past their waist. as you stand there, i have to think rhode island beaches, massachusetts bases, they are seeing what you are experiencing. >> reporter: this is really a coastal system. you're talking about a lot of the impact at the shore, especially toward the south coast. getting into rhode island, today they've seen some huge waves. the coast guard house there, that would be the spot to be. waves ng today. the surf is the big story here. you look out over the dunes. i guess even though it's a holiday weekend, you can't complain too much. we haven't had many days that have looked like this. nothing but sunshine and warm weather, but now as soon as we unofficially ended the season here, things looking more like storm season approaching in new england. let's look at the satellite picture where the storm is and where it's going to head over the next couple days. we have our system just spinning is way off to the south right

of a westward turn which was expected today and is moving toward long island. that's going to spiral in clouds and rain bands as we had through the next couple days. very slow gradual movement is expected with the storm center. most of the squalls have been toured to cape cod and the islands. starting to swing their way further northward. a lot of dryer air over the interior free the further north, the lower the rain chances. bigger totals will be focused in this part of the state. we look at wind gusts. nantucket gusting to 58. here on the cape, a gust of 52. the hanis airport at 48 miles per hour. it's not the biggest storm you'll ever see. enough for scattered pockets of damage and really whipping up the surf. we look at the current gusts and it shows a story. it's a similar picture as we had tuesday into wednesday and

weakens over time. here is a look at our impacts. fortunately, for us astronomical tides going down right now. they are not at a high level. it's really about the surf, the rip currents if anyone wants to get into the water. we might be chewing away at the beaches here over the course of this whole week. tonight looking at those scattered showers. best chance south and east. the storm intensity is peaking tonight. it weakens as we head into tuesday and wednesday but it's still strong enough to keep winds blowing and to keep the showers rotating in. a lot of cloud cover tomorrow following a similar idea that north and west of boston mainly dry. the cooler air and strongest winds will be south and east of the city focused right here where we are tonight. as we look at the overall movement of it, you notice this

weaker wednesday, weaker still into thursday, and then finally scooting offshore as we head toward the end of this week. as soon as it leaves, we bring in the heat. looking toward thursday, friday, and saturday, a very warm forecast. summer heat will come right back at us like july heat. looking at 90s for friday and saturday and the chance of a couple thunderstorms. it's an interesting week of new england weather, no question about that. as soon as we get hermine out of the picture forecasters are looking forward to, we're talking about a very warm september 3 the outlook is that the summer warmth will hold on for a good part of the month. that part of all of this, we send it back into the studio. the area is not picking up rainfall from the storm, then you bring in the heat. the drought is actually getting much worse as we head into the
