a vigil was held here on 9/11 to honor all of them. >> i am looking at 11 years that he has been gone and it seems like yesterday. >> sergeant michael kelly decided to join the national guard right after 9/11. >> he was in afghanistan for 69 days and was killed in an attack . >> reporter: he was just 26 years old. >> as far as memorial day and all that sort of thing goes, every day is memorial for us. there is not a day that we don't think about him and what he stood for. in our eyes, we are proud of him. he is a hero. >> reporter: sergeant kelly was the third oldest of four. >> he was the funniest guy. he was great. he had the best sense of humor.

zarling not to forget. brook silva braga cbs news new york. >> we would like to acknowledge two dedicated employees who lost their lives on september 11, robert adamson was -- robert pattison and isaiah rivera, both engineers. both men were on the 110th floor. we send our heartfelt condolences to both families. hundreds gave blood in honor of those who lost their lives in the attack. this was the scen remembrance blood drive at fenway park. a woman from waltham brought her entire family to the event to help others in the name of those who were killed. >> this is the best thing that you can do for 9/11. i am proud to be part of this. >> we were among those donating. the remembrance blood drive began in 2002. each year on 9/11, a local award goes to someone many would call a here. on this anniversary of the

on 9/11, it is the opportunity to remember those who lost their lives by recognizing people who embody their spirit. flight attendant amy sweeney put the lives of others before herself as did george heath earlier this year. the families of both euros to pay tribute to their heroes -- loved ones. >> reporter: two women brought together by the heroic actions of those they loved. anne sweeney was five years old when her mother was killed learned i home wasn't coming home. >> reporter: amy sweeney was a flight attendant on flight -- on the first flight attacked. >> she could have called her family for one last goodbye but instead she chose to report vital information to logan airport which would change the world. >> reporter: the madeline amy sweeney award recognizes somebody who heroically acted with no regard for themselves. >> he intervened and was

described george heath, into early may he and his wife were at the taunton mall when a man with a knife was on the attack. heath gave his life to save a pregnant woman. his wife rosemary accepted those -- the award. >> i wish my husband were sitting next to me. i want everybody to think about helping other people, do the right thing. be like amy recipients. >> reporter: a message that resonated with anne sweeney who remembers once were the most about her mom, the one about her actions on 9/11. >> it is so symbolic of inner strength and courage and want to makes me so incredibly proud to call myself or daughter. >> the award has been given out every year since 2002. in other news, dozens of college students are recovering after they were injured in a tech collapse in connecticut

3:'s collapsed on each other at an off-campus home. most of the students go to trinity college. others were visiting. students say they were pulling each other out of the rubble. >> those were heavy, old decks that came down. you see a lot of they would was rotted and old and not structurally sound. you get 50 or 60 kids out there. >> i saw where the accident occurred. worse and no lives were lost. >> local media reports 28 students were taken to area hospitals. most of them have since been released. a car went up in flames. the driver is amazingly safe thanks to people who stopped. a 63-year-old woman's car crashed into a poll on sandwhich road near the upper cape cod technical high school. it happened around 5 am. the road had to be shut down for a few hours why -- while crews cleaned up the scene. investigators are calling a

afternoon, crews were trying to put out the flames. they closed the bridge and are trying to figure out how it caught fire. police need your help finding a stabbing suspect in the south end. someone stabbed a man in his 20s around 10:30 pm. the good news is he is expected to survive. firefighters rescued four windsurfers this morning. they received a call about a surfer in distress around 11 am. when they arrived, they found four people in th to get everyone back on land. it was fairly nice after those brief storms. how is this week shaping up? >> a picture perfect start. low humidity and cooler temperatures and then we go back to summerlike temperatures midweek with changes in the seven-day forecast. our next shot at rain. here is a look at what occurred this morning if you were

missed it but maybe you were on cape cod or something and you said what severe weather? radar rewind, 8:05 am, a line of severe storms moved through dorchester county, and toward lowell and boston but then all of a sudden, everything dried up as it moved toward the southeastern parts of the state. cape cod barely saw any rain and we had a couple sprinkles reported but rainfall totals not very impressive to the south and east. we did see beneficial rain, just outside of boston. a quarter inch in an isolated location but most spots had around a 10th inch of rain accumulation. that won't help us with drought conditions. every little bit helps but it is not going to get us out of this huge deficit. extreme drought conditions have continued to expand week by week. the next drought monitor will be updated on thursday. we do not have a lot of rain the next few days. high pressure in control over

24 hours. because of that airflow and a refreshing dew point of 46 degrees, yesterday we had dew point temperatures in the 60s and low 70s. that is not the case for tomorrow. the temperature now in boston is 67 degrees with a low dew point and the wind from the north at 12 miles per hour. temperatures have cooled into the 50s for our friends in keen. 35 degrees in tonton. overnight lows continue to drop into the 50s but wouldn't be surprised if you saw mid-40s for those lows. tomorrow at the beach, 70 degrees to 74 degrees with a seabreeze kicking in later on even though we start with a north breeze and when coming -- wind coming off the water. 65 degrees to 750 water temperature. cooler at the coast because of that seabreeze. some upper 70s farther inland. hour by hour, high pressure still in control. that slips to our east just a

just a little bit. wednesday, really getting an increase in humidity prior to storm chances. not a complete washout or anything like that. most of the rain chances will be later in the day. a high of 88 degrees and then we go back to fall like temperatures. refreshing and dryer air thursday and friday. will sunshine. next weekend, a chance for some rain but not an all day washout. >> looks like a decent week. we will be back with sports

we knew this first pass game was going to be interesting. dan roach is rolling down the fort in foxboro. so far, what do you think? truck pretty impressive stuff from jimmy garoppolo. patriots opening up their season in glendale, aron ii years ago. all eyes on jimmy garoppolo taking over for tom brady, suspended for the first four games. so far, garoppolo has responded and done pretty well leading the patriots to a lead of 23-21 with about two minutes left to go in this contest as far as the pats are concerned. garoppolo just set up a 32 yard -- 32 yard field goal.

no gronkowski, no neat soldier, no rob ninkovich. speaking of rob ninkovich, he was awarded with the contract today. he signed a one-year extension with the pats to keep them here through the end of next year. he has been with the pats since 2009 and has 40 career sacks and usually finds a way to make a play when the pats need it most. right after kickoff tonight, the patriots took down the banner of tom brady here at gillette stadium. the team president said "from the end that he is on everybody's mind and we love him." the brady tanner is now no more. red sox and blue jays. a big baseball weekend wrapping up today in toronto. toronto would be tied with the red sox if they pulled out a victory today. the red sox looking to widen the gap a bit if they can get a win and they handed the ball to clay buchholz today.
