breaking news at noon. a stand off situation has just come to an end. swat team spent the morning at cumberland farms where a man the entire area was evacuated. >> this all started when a man threatened an employee at that store. bill shield is live with this story. good news this is all over now. >> reporter: it is over. however, chris, it is still closed at this area. this started as you said around 7:00 a.m. this morning when a man went into the cumberland farm.

clerk in there. then he went back outside and got in a car which was at the gas pumps. the clerk shut down the gas pumps and shut down the store and left. the police came in, in force. they brought in heavy equipment. they surrounded the man that was sitting in the passenger seat of his car. they surrounded him with heavy equipment. the stand off lasted up until about 30 minutes ago when all of a sudden down here at our location we heard the grenade. apparently that did the trick. that knocked him out to some degree. enough for police to get this there and take him into custody. now the area as you mentioned earlier was shut down around 7:00 a.m.. including a lot of businesses. we spoke with the owners of a breakfast place. they had to shut down their business at the height of their rush hour. >> we really didn't see

>> it's scary because we all have kids in this town. we all go to cumberland farm. >> reporter: everything is under control now. although they still have route 33 4e -- they still have route 44 closed off. the suspect was taken by ambulance. he had a police detail leading him to a hospital. we don't know his coio we don't know what he was demanding if anything. only that he was apparently armed. now he's been take ton a local hospital. bill shields wbz news. new information this noon regarding our drought as it expands across the area. >> more than half of massachusetts is in what is now considered an extreme drought. let's check in with danielle niles. a big increase from last week.

the map expands westward, southward, all the areas shaded in red. nine plus inches. this is for this year alone. it is a big expansion. just from last week. it keeps getting worse and worse. extreme drought now encompasses 52% of massachusetts and 19% of new hampshire. you saw most of it in the southern part of the granite state. it has expanded just from this last week alone. there are showers in the but we need a steady prolonged rain to make a little bit of a dent in this drought and there is none in the forecast for the rest of today and tomorrow. by the time we get to sunday and monday, the risk goes up. no rain today. 60s though right now. upper 50s in worcester. huge shift from yesterday. maybe 70s. that about it. we are clear, crisp, and cool

around 4:00 wednesday afternoon. >> got to feel for the people. the parents. i feel bad for them. i just hope they can get closure. >> reporter: according to investigators, the 26-year-old man took a boat out on to harry pond. accompanied by two other people and went for a swim. investigators believe the boat drifted in the choppy water and the swimmer was unable to make it back to the boat or shore. >> there is sections that is over 100-foot where they are at right it's all grassy and mucky down below. it's very hard for visibility. >> reporter: stormy weather forced search crews back out of the water. but as soon as the sun rose thursday, crews from neighboring communities were standing by waiting to lend a hand to help find that missing man. now we reached out to plymouth's fire and police departments several times today. they have not received an update just yet.

here. but we can tell you they are using sonar equipment now today along with divers in the water to try to help find this swimmer. live in plymouth this afternoon nick geovany wbz news. police arrested a man that threatened to blow up the police department. warren bears was seen getting out of a car with a machete early this morning. they found an open leaking gas, and a bottle of gasoline. bears told police he was going to blow up the department. a 17-year-old from beverly accused of stabbing someone during a home invasion is due in court this afternoon. police say the teen went into a home on living stone avenue, demanded money, and stabbed a 25-year-old man there. that victim was taken to the hospital. police and canine units from several towns tracked down that suspect at a nearby backyard. a change of plea today from

is accused of trying to extort the hit bravo show top chef. mayor pleaded guilty today to try to intimidate a crew from that hit show top chef to hiring a local union labor for the shoot. hairing ton will be sentenced in december. this noon a dollar tree employee is facing charges for using a camera to up skirt a woman at the company's malden man just faced a judge. nicole. >> reporter: according to court documents, this incident was caught on store surveillance. even though the suspect in this case christopher malino denies it ever happened. i want to get you to video from inside court this afternoon where the 29-year-old went before a judge just a short time ago. accused of taking an obscene

a customer at the local dollar tree where malino worked. a woman told police she saw malino place a cell phone on the floor directly under the woman's skirt and then she yelled what are you doing? malino reportedly ran into an employee office room. police were called by the victims mother as well as malino who said he called because they were yelling at him. police were also able to take a look at the store surveillance malino crouching down behind the alleged victim and placing his right hand directly under the woman's dress. now malino did have a stay away order issued today for both that alleged victim, the store, and any witnesses in this case. i can also tell you that his cell phone was seized. although he denies ever taking any photos or deleting any.

science, i would say sign me up for that high school. so we're talking about the drought. a lot of people are saying we're in a deficit but this goes beyond this past year. 2014-2015 the historic snowfall season. but after that. we've had several months just a couple that have had above average in terms of precipitation. this was a lot of below average months which puts us in boston since january of 2015. 18 inches below the average. that is significant. so we are not just talking about an inch here or there over a few months. this has been a long standing issue and will continue to be until we get steady, soaking persistent significant rainfall. we're about 15-20 degrees cooler than we were yesterday. it's 65 in boston right now. the dew points 50.

every time a new charter school opens in massachusetts, it takes funding away from regular public schools in that area. this year alone, charter schools will take more than 400 million dollars away from neighborhood public schools.
