>> we just took a bolt of lightning. >> a lightning strike on a jetblue flight gets diverted to logan airport monday morning. all passengers and crew are safe. >> right now it's still thunderstorms three miles or less so we are going to have to go to the south. >> the faa said monday that the airbus 320 left new york during the flight the plane was diverted to boston to address what jetblue calls a noncritical equipment issue. it was then when the plane was on its way to logan that it was hit by lightning. maintenance crews inspected the plane monday morning. >> are lightning strikes dangerous? >> they can be. >> the retired pilot and the

flight simulator says planes are capable of handling a lightning strike, but they are dangerous. >> when you get a bolt of lightning, you don't know what's happening, whether it's going to cause electronics to malfunction, whether it's mechanical, especially if you take a hit just covering the radar antenna. >> you could hear during the flight the pilot also had radar issues. >> are radar is not the . the best weather for us to head to? we want to get in the clear. >> when passengers arrived, they were switched to another plane and continued on to bermuda. >> the fact they were going over water, it was important they did land before they coasted out. >> the faa is investigating the incident. those passengers are safe and this morning they left to go back to bermuda. i'm paul burton, wbz news. there is a store much tonight and it's a welcome one. nothing severe expected but the area getting that much needed soaking. a couple inches at least here.

almost 5 inches of rain today. some saw a quarter inch or less. it was in every single town but we did get some beneficial rain. you see it streaming of the eastern seaboard here. we are watching this front right now moving into northern michigan. this is a front we call a kicker. it's going clouds and humidity out to see but that doesn't happen until tomorrow. a few more showers tonight. stays very humid outdoors. there's the chance for a couple lingering morning showers tomorrow especially toward cape cod and the islands. after that, not too many rain chances. a quick front moves through late

with that, a chance for a few more rain showers. toward the rest of the week, drying out. not a whole lot more rainfall in the forecast after today. false starts on thursday officially with the equinox. it'll feel a lot like summer all work week long. then when we get to the weekend, a real blast of fall air will move in. this might be the coolest of the season so far. we'll talk patriots and talk about the tropics as well. it does include bermuda. more coming up in a bit. boston police are searching for the person who shot a man outside an austin nightclub. investigators say the violence outside the garage a fight. the victim was shot several times. one bullet grazed his head. he is now in the hospital but is expected to survive. a child in chelsea was hit by a driver this morning who weaved around a stopped school bus. the bus had its lights on but the driver still went forward. the six-year-old boy wasn't badly hurt but he was flipped by the side mirror. paramedics took him to the hospital and the driver was cited. former red sox pitcher curt schilling agreed to a multimillion dollar settlement over his failed videogame company. he and others will pay $2.5 million to the state of rhode island. that state lured his company to rhode island with $75 million

when the company went bankrupt, the state was left on the hook for that money. after 12 days, the nuclear power plant is back up and running at full capacity tonight. crews shut it down to repair a valve and perform some other maintenance. the owners say the public was never in any danger. it's the only nuclear power plant in massachusetts and slated to close for good in 2019. a federal prosecutor says new jersey -- new jersey governor chris christie knew about a plan to shut down lanes on the george washington bridge while it was happening. the trial of two former allies got underway. the decision to close the lanes created traffic gridlock. prosecutors say this was done in retaliation for in new jersey mayor who did not support christie in his reelection bid. tonight miami's wynnewood neighborhood is no longer considered a zika hot zone. that's the area where mosquitoes were first found to

high humidity air and start to dry us out and bring in the sun. it's also going to bring in the heat. tomorrow morning lingering showers especially toward cape cod and the islands. it'll be a humid morning. midday working and more sunshine from west to east. still a lingering showers for the south coast and the cape and then we all dry out as we head for the afternoon. humidity coming down a little bit but it's still going to be muggy. temperatures make their way into the 80s which is 10 degrees above average for this time of year. forecasting 85 in la near 80s on cape cod. certainly, some tropical air. then we get the relief tomorrow night. high pressure builds in looking like a really nice wednesday and thursday. temperatures still in the 80s but the humidity will come down for both of those days. if you look at the temperature trend here, hard to imagine we had into the end of september. it's all 80s. depending on when the front

wants to see events which discuss the dangers of those drugs. the white house says the number of deadly overdoses has almost quadrupled in the past 17 years. >> for decades codeine has been used for pain relief for children. a new report is morning doctors and parents about some potentially deadly dangers. dr. malcolm marshall has a closer look. >> reporter: a new report from the american academy of pediatrics says doctors and parents should stop giving coding to children under 18. it's been linked to dangerous side effects, including deadly breathing problems. some doctors still prescribed to treat pain or cough in kids. >> there have been deaths associated with codeine usage in children, but not just tonsillectomy, and particularly children who have problems with sleep apnea. >> the body turns codeine into morphine. experts say depending on how

, some children get too much of the drug. despite previous warnings from the aap and the fda, the drug is still available in over-the- counter cough medicines in many states. dr. randall slick was part of an fda panel last year. they found no evidence codeine works for cough, and when it comes to pain, there are safer alternatives, including oxycodone. >> the risks of using oxycodone are a different outlet. >> for kidsin tonsils removed, acetaminophen and ibuprofen are often adequate. >> and fda review found there were 21 deaths from codeine in children from 1965 through 2015 and more than 60 cases of severe breathing problems. that's because codeine can actually suppress the brain strive to breathe. >> so how urgent is this for parents in massachusetts? they have to be looking at the bottles to see if there's codeine. >> here in massachusetts, you have to get it by prescription.
