crews on 93 south this morning. not right here in somerville but further down in the tunnel. they're at exit 23, the ramp is closed and there's also construction on 93 north inside of the tunnel. the left lanes are closed there. >> thank you very much. we'll start with some breaking news. a state of emergency declared in charlotte, north carolina. the national guard brought in overnight to deal with violent protests. one man is in critical condition as he was shot by a civilian. >> thenr deadly officer-involved shooting. don champion has the latest now from charlotte. >> reporter: the chaos in charlotte stretched into the overnight hours. tear gas filled the air and at least one flash bang exploded. as officers moved in to clear the street. the scene played out as anger over the deadly police shooting

streets for a second night. some demonstrators were arrested peacefully but damage to businesses and stores in charlotte's vibrant uptown mounted. windows were smashed even at the sports arena. >> justice justify everything. if you give the black man justice in accordance to the laws of the land, there will be no need for this. >> reporter: at one point a man was shot in the head by another civilian, drawing raw emotion from this protester. >> we came out here for this is not how we succeed. i was sitting right next to him. there was no life in his eyes. >> reporter: fueling the unrest, the different narratives of what led up to keith scott's death tuesday. >> i want people to know that we are going to make sure that our investigation is thorough and it's transparent. >> reporter: police say the 43 year old ignored repeated demands to drop a gun with when they confronted him at this apartment complex but family

book, not a weapon. don champion, cbs news, charlotte. . also breaking overnight, police investigating a deadly motorcycle crash. it happened at the laurens line just before 11:00 ras night. what we know, one person is dead, two injured and taken to the hospital. all four lines of route 114 near waverly road, they were shthis down for several hours as police investigated. breaking news in salem, fire tears through a home on meadow morning. crews saw heavy flames. one person was taken to the hospital. four adults are now displaced by that fire. cell phone video shows rescuers struggling to lift an suv off a group of teenagers. police tell us the teen stole that land rover. it started in jamaica plain yesterday afternoon when a woman called 911 saying the teen stole her suv. witnesses tell us police chased the land rover in ruffle bury but police say it wasn't a

flip over. >> when he hit the corner you can't drive too good, so he just flipped over. >> witnesses say one of the teens jumped out of that suv. they say he's the one handcuffed in the video. another teen is in critical condition. a rhode island man is expected to pled guilty today. prosecutors say nicholas ra vin ski and two other men plotted kill say conservative blogger. one of the other suspects was killed by police outside of cvs last year. david every set awaiting trial. right now the search is on for two potential witnesses. these are the two men investigators want to talk to. they say the men took a suitcase they found on a street after removing that undetonated bomb. that was the second pressure cooker bomb in she will sy that did not go off. investigators are not calling

to talk to them as they want that luggage as evidence. we're also getting a first look at that bloody journals saying the bombing suspect was carrying when he was captured. they say that notebook is full of terror-relate rambling. rahimi is still in the hospital. we're told he is not cooperating with police. his wife will return to the united states soon. new this morning, another incident of racism being investigated at a local me arlington school's superintendent says two students got into a fight at a middle school last week. one of them started yelling racially charged statements at the other. their parents have been notified and punishments were issued. this is the third incident this year. in march racist graffiti was found in the bathroom and in june a racist texting incident turned out to be a hoax. a vandal attacks a boston landmark. the globe is reporting someone

through the window of a holy cross. that cathedral is the mother church of the boston archdiocese. today and tomorrow it will hold a relic of the saint padre pee yo. a cathedral spokesperson tells the repairs will cost about a three thundershowers dollars. a woman on a collision course with a duck boat. this the surveillance video shows her walking on the curb and into the path of the duck boat. how did this happen, brianna? >>. ep the boylston and arlington streets. it appears to show the woman not even looking at traffic or using the crosswalk. duck boats came under fire as a moped was crushed, killing a 28 year old. since then, the company has installed blind spot cameras, but people say nothing can stop poor judgment. >> i see cars and pedestrians

tomorrow. so ahead of it today, warm summer-like temperatures yet again. right around 80 at the coastline. a little wind off the ocean kicks in. 75 to 80 on the cape. most of us in the middle 80s through the interior today. it looks beautiful. thursday night football good to go tonight if you're doing any tailgating this evening, it's going to be sunny and warm in the low 80s. and then falling back into the 70s for kick off at 8:25, mostly clear, pleasant. we will fall quickly, though through the 60s by the end of the game. you may need an extra f sweatshirt or something like that. 62 tonight, 50s in most of the suburbs. tomorrow, back into the 80s we go. but you see the coloring on the map. see the orange and warmth down here, then it turns green. that's the cooler that's going to be spilling southward during the day tomorrow. it's with the front. so what we'll see tomorrow is sunshine to start, and then building clouds. the front comes through during

lanes are closed. we have bad news in you use route 128. part of the highway will close for an entire weekend. according to the globe, the section of 128 and 95 will be shut down from friday night, november 4th, through the 6th. that's because crews will be tearing down the old highland avenue bridge and they say it's not safe for cars to be traveling underneath while that is happening. so far no word on how cars will be detoured around the closure. >> thank you very much. a troubling look at the impact of the opioid crisis. went to warn you this video you're about to see is disturbing. a shopper at a family dollar store in lawrence shot this cell phone video. that's a mother who is just overdosed lying unconscious on the floor. her 2-year-old daughter trying and crying as she tries to wake her mother up. paramedics revive that mother with narcan. police worry that the little girl witnessed this before. >> it's very disturbing, you

. we continue following breaking news from north carolina this morning. a state of emergency is now in place in charlotte, the national guard was called in to help after a second night of protests turned violent. a civilian is in critical condition after police say he was shot by a protesters charged police in riot gear. the protests are in response to the shooting of a black man by a black officer on tuesday. new overnight a fire knocks out power to all of fuquay-varina. crews are working right now to -- puerto rico. crews are working right now to get -- the largest hospital is canceling electric surgery. a man is accused of stealing

software. they show him in a box store. police say he got away with more than $9,000 worth. it happened on august 20th. if you have any information that could help, call police. a well-known travel expert fighting to legalize marijuana in massachusetts. boston magazine reports that rick steves supports legalizing the drug and will donate $100,000 to the matching funds. the issue will be on the november ballot. steves will tour the bay state for four days next month t and convince voters to approve the measure. he has previously proved for legalization in washington, oregon, and colorado. steves isn't the only one weighing in on massachusetts issues. actress indicate maurer ra tweeted her support that would require farms and businesses here to only sell cage-free eggs. ballot measure three would also ban the sale of pork and veal

every time a new charter school opens in massachusetts, it takes funding away from regular public schools in that area. this year alone, charter schools will take more than 400 million dollars away from neighborhood public schools. right. instead of draining even more money from neighborhood public schools and giving it to charters, let's devote public resources to all of our students... not just a select few. don't lift the cap on charter schools.
