let's take a live look at the mass pike this morning as we anticipate that rain to come into the area in the next hour or so. it's going to be kind of a mess out there later on this morning. so far things are moving along quite well other than late-clearing construction crews. we'll keep you updated. breaking overnight a deadly shooting in jamaica plain. right now police are asking for the public's help. that shooting happened around 1:00 a.m. on center street, not far from jackson square. mbta station. a man in several times. police are canvassing the area, talking to witnesses and looking for surveillance video. they're asking anyone with information to come forward. also this morning, donald trump and hillary clinton going head to head, facing off in their first presidential debate. there were plenty of fireworks. >> but did either candidate sway voters? we take a closer look. >> i've been a senator. >> you haven't done it. >> i have been -- >> rreporter: the first of the

a hard look at republican nominee donald trump and democrat hillary clinton. >> i have actually grown pretty fond of both candidates pretty equally. >> reporter: with vastly different approaches and plans to lead the country, the man who leads the bay state and has been named one of the most likeable governors in the country has held his vote and support close to the vest, but still saying he hoped the debate would be about the issues and not the personalities. >> clinton has a very uplifting, you know, hopeful message and trump is just doom and gloom. >> i really think that something that i do like about trump is the way he speaks isn't so polished. >> reporter: at a northeastern watch party some students have made up their minds. >> i'm not sure that it's going to influence my vote that much. >> reporter: that doesn't appear to be governor charlie baker's case who has made it clear he

clinton, or a third party candidate. going into the debate, of course, the polls were up, they were down, they showed a very tight race many of them. it will be very interesting to see how this debate impacts those poll numbers. that's the very latest from the statehouse. >> all right. thank you very much. nationwide this race is a virtual tie right now. even in massachusetts where democrats historically have an edge, the racer is close polls show hillary clinton with a 13 point lead over donald trump with libertarian gary johnson and jill stein far behind. they show clinton and trump low favorability ratings well behind president obama's current approval rating. you can see the put results on our website. clinton and trump will meet in the second of three debates on october 9th at washington university in st. louis. and you can watch it live right

now to a developing story. the suspect in a shooting at a cvs is under arrest. police say they caught a man with a loaded gun in boston last night. he will be arraigned on drug and gun charges in roxbury this morning. then he will be transferred to stoughton where he is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder in the shooting of an 18 year old inside a cvs last week. that man is expected to recover. police say they will test the weapon to see if it's connected to the shooting. a mystery at sea. deepens this man found alone in a life raft is on his way back to boston right now. there are still a lot of unanswered questions about exactly what happened. let's get right to anna meiler in boston with new details. anna. >> reporter: and chris, 22-year-old nathan carman is expected to arrive in boston sometime today aboard the freighter that found him floating on a life raft in the middle of the ocean. coast guard officials are hoping to get a better idea of what

with a life jacket on and food and water. >> reporter: nathan carman found alive after seven days stranded at sea. but his mother, 54-year-old linda carman, wasn't with him. they left from rhode island on their beat for an overnight fishing trip ten days ago. they ran into trouble one day later, somewhere off the tip of long island. >> it was reported that he -- when the water -- when the boat his life raft, he went looking for his mom and he could not find her. >> reporter: when the pair didn't return, a family friend reported them missing. >> my friend and the world not right without her in it. >> reporter: but officials say it's unlikely linda survived and they won't be resuming their. >> reporter: water temperature, the fact that the linda carman was unpresented from the elements. >> reporter: this isn't the family's first tragedy. several years ago nathan who has

he turned up days later in virginia. in 2013 his grandfather was shot and killed inside his connecticut home, a crime that is still unsolved. this latest loss has friends and family wondering what went wrong. >> we have a lot of questions and hopefully he will be able to answer some of them. >> reporter: coast guard officials say there was never any mayday or any kind of distress call made at the time the boat sank. now nathan is reported to be in good condition. he's expected to arrive in boston sometime today. reporting live meiler, wbz this morning. norwood police arresting one man twice in the same shift. police say thomas demarzo was first picked up at 2:30 a.m. on saturday for breaking into a home on silver street. they say he admitted to the crime but claims he was sleepwalking. he was released on bail and a fought hours -- a few hours later, police received another call. they found demarzo with stolen items. he was placed under arrest again

just about 5:10 on your tuesday morning. controversy in mill bury. a home con item, the owner living in his van in the driveway. he can't live. chris bernard was placed on house arrest. he violated his probation from a drunk driving arrest. the thing is, the board of health says he can't live in the house, they say it's facility, invested -- filthy, invested with bugs, garbage and pest waste. >> it's not bad. i have a coffee maker, a be quite honest with you, because i think the court knew these -- the house has been condemned. >> he also has to wear gps monitoring bracelet. the home is under agreement and the sale could close next month. right now the town manager wants to make sure $20,000 in back taxes gets paid. a federal civil rights investigation finds evidence of discrimination and harassment at boston latin school. the investigation found the

complaints that another student threatened to lynch her with an electrical court cord. the investigation found there were two other troubling incidents, the school's former headmaster calls the investigation purely political and that's why he says he resigned. >> there is no discrimination at boston latin school, a claim there's a civil rights violation on a case we did handle in which a student was seemed to me really reaching pretty far. >> boston latin officials have agreed to sweeping reforms, including training for students and staff, hiring a new diversity officer and conducting an annual survey of the race climate. superintendent says the school system is fully committed to implementing these regulations and making sure any report of racial bias is addressed quickly. just about 5:12. coming up an emotional field on the baseball field. >> how the marlins honored their

. well, talk about luck. a framingham man just won $1 million on a scratch ticket for the a year. this is howard ranken, he claimed his first wingings in november of 2005 and he bought both of his lucky tickets at the shop and shop in framingham. both times he chose the cash option of $650,000. obviously we need to hang out with howard. >> yep. >> at the stop and shop in framingham. >> maybe howard could pick some tickets for us. >> for us.

that's unbelievable. >> good for him. >> he we had -- we need howard. >> we need the rain too. >> yes we do. >> unfortunate timing for the morning commute. you take a little time on the roads here. it's moving through from west to east. it's steady rain at that. so you'll need the wipers on too. notice a back edge already starting here. let me get out of the way. starting to cross route 91 here in the next half hour or so. but there are some heavy downpours in there. so this band of rain does push through pretty quickly but it is timing things out so areas of rain extend now through the merrimac valley. leading edge advancing inside of 495 to a couple of sprinkles from lynn. there are some areas of rain from wooster stretching east. down through hop kinton and milford. this will continue to spread east over the next couple of hours. in fact, between now and let's say 6:00, 6:30. 8:00 it's pouring in a lot of spots in eastern massachusetts.

wooster county. the rain will start to taper off from west to east by mid to late morning. but notice it will linger a little bit longer from places like the southshore until 10:00, 10:30. cape and islands may get one more batch of showers. then some breaks in sunshine and peeks of blue sky should be coming out for the second half of the day. but then the clouds are going to win out right at the immediate coastline. nonetheless, that still boosts our temperatures in theow where we get those peeks of sun, probably mid-70s, places like fitchburg, low 70s right at the immediate coastline today. the clouds are going to return tonight. there may be a couple of showers around, 59 for an overnight low. most of us will be in the 50s. and then highs tomorrow only in the low 60s. that is it. we really don't rebound very much at all. it's going to be an on-shore wind. definitely a chilly raw feel, lower to middle 60s on the cape.

level low that's spinning in central can dark that's going to dive south and stall out for the middle and end of the week. what that means for us is there will be clouds, there will be patchy drizzle, there will be some showers, so really kind of gloomy second half of the week. this is the map tomorrow. it's not a ton of wet weather, some drizzle at the coast, but you want to have the umbrella kind of on stand by the next couple of days. here's a map on thursday, a little of green showing up. this next batch of should push through on friday. it does look like it will last in the striati of the weekend with lingering showers on saturday. perhaps a few more on sunday. >> all right. danielle, thank you let's get a live look rite now at your commute. this is the eastbound lanes of the mass pike out in brighton. you can see there's really just a handful of people out there. nothing too major. there was an earlier accident. it seems that is not affecting traffic, though as you get

riding through the o'neill tunnel. another driver took this fauve video. you can see the -- cell phone video. it appears to be on a hubway rental bicycle there. >> it's so outrageous that he's doing it, that it's almost funny. like it's -- you can't believe someone is doing this. >> just a few hours earlier, mass dot cameras caught another cyclists r tunnel. it is extremely dangerous and definitely illegal to ride a bike on 93 or any area highway. do not do it. the marlins taking the field for the first time since the death of their star pitcher. the marlins hosted the mets last night and every player for miami wore fernandez' number, 16. the team is also retiring that number. fernandez died in a boating accident early sunday morning. there was a special tribute

breaks down the night's biggest moments and takes a closer look at the biggest differences between the candidates. >> reporter: good morning. did you stay up late and watch the debate last night? if not, i urge you to go to cbsboston.com where you'll find a link to it. because we may never see another contrast in style and content as stark as the one hillary clinton and donald trump presented. for starters, if these two seem to be talking past each other on major policy i wonder. he believes in supply side tax cuts to spur job growth and trade protectionism to keep jobs herein. she supports tax hikes on the wealth and free trade to cut prices for consumers. on crime, he talks about backing cops and getting tough. she talks about rights and building trust. she cast herself as the one who can work with the political establishment. he wants to fire it. and when it comes to

contrast is even more stark. last night clinton was more consistently calm and even tempered and wants to impress you with her risumi. at times she was too calm, failing to exploit opportunities to stick it to him. trump was louder and more outraged, qualities that helped him win the nominee. he asks voters to take a leap of faith, that a vehicle for their anger and frustration might also become a great leader. she embraces specifics and seems rhetoric. he shuns the details for the most part and doesn't hide his contempt for her. sometimes debates can change the course of a race. my guess is that this one solidified it, exciting each candidate's base without necessarily expanding it but only time and the vote itself will tell. meanwhile, two more of these to

through milton down through braintree and then a lot of this, again, moving through from west to east. so temperatures are in the upper 50s to low 60s. but as this band of rin comes through over the next couple of hours, the back edge comes through pretty quickly. it's pushing in through eastern massachusetts 8:00, 8:30. the far southshore to the cape still dealing with a little bit of rain. some showers will linger into early afternoon. they will come back over the cape between 1:00 peninsula. some peeks of sunshine are likely here and there. so where we do get those breaks, we'll be in the low 70s. again showers linger along cape cod. most of us end up with a quarter inch of rain, let's say either side of that give or take. there may be a few locally higher amounts. the clouds will return tonight. chance of a shower, 59 for an overnight low. most of us will be in the 50s. tomorrow, kind of a gloomy feel.
