>> the news at 5:00 starts right now. and developing right now at 5:00 a.m. a woman pulled from a roadside ravine in weymouth. what we're learning about the complicated rescue. >> a 2-year-old in the hospital after she was hit by a car in new hampshire and police say her 7-year-old sister was behind the wheel. >> popping the champagne the sox lose but still manage to clinch the eastern league east title. we locker room. . good morning to you. it's 5:00 right now. thanks so much for waking up with us. >> it is thursday, september 29th. another dreary day after a dreary day yesterday. danielle what are we looking for this morning. >> it looks like we may see, chris and kate, a few peeks of sunshine today. so that will be a welcome change. they'll be few and far between but there will be a few out there. 56 in boston out there right

wooster as well. 52 in keene. 40 in concord. cooler to the north because we actually have some clear skies in parts of central new hampshire. the wind is gusty. that's churning up the seas as well. so we have a high surf advisory. otherwise skies mainly cloudy although some peeks of kind of star-lit sky in northern massachusetts through the merrimac valley and southern new hampshire. that's the trend today. we'll see a few of those patches of blue sky, 50s to low 60s. could be a little bit of spotty drizzle right at the coastline. most of the day is dry, though. sunset at 6:28. i'll let you know when steadier rain comes back in the mix. >> no traffic yet. there is a lot of construction happening around the city. there's some work happening up on 495 that will be happening during rush hour. it's going to be northbound between exits 54 and 55. that is route 150 to route 110.

until 6:00 a.m. this were southbound it would ab i problem for the morning commute. northbound shouldn't be so bad. i am expecting it to cause delays. we'll keep our eye on it. we begin with a developing story in weymouth in thursday. a woman badly injured and rescued from a roadside ravine. >> a wbz anna mile ler is live -- anna meiler is live. >> reporter: the big question this morning is how did this woman end up stranded down a deep emben of the highway. that is information we are still waiting to learn from police. take a look at this video showing a very large active scene along route 18 in weymouth near the exit for route 3 this all started around 9:00 last night. first responders used ropes to climb an estimated 30 to 40 feet down the ravine so they could carry this woman out. fire officials say she was in rough shape but we don't know what those injuries are or who her condition is at this time. also something worth pointing

to a tree where investigators spent a lot of their time. there are still many questions surrounding this rescue, this is an ongoing investigation and we will bring you any new information as we learn it. reporting live in weymouth, anna meiler, wbz this morning. >> okay. anna wheel check in. the young man rescued at sea 100 miles off the massachusetts coast says he did not harm his mother or kill his grandfather. 22-year-old nathan carman says suspicions about his account of what happenedn increasing his grief over the apparent drowning of his mother, police searched his home in connection with the case. court documents also reveal he was a suspect in the 2013 murder of his grandfather in connecticut. nathan's father says his son is not capable of hurting anyone. >> there's a -- they're the two closest people to my son in the world. and let me just say this, there's no way he would ever injure either one of them.

grandfather's murder but prosecutors said there's not enough information to sign it. a 2-year-old from new hampshire is in the hospital this morning after police say she was run over by her 7-year-old sister. nicole jacobs is live outside boston children's hospital where that little girl is being treated. nicole. >> reporter: kate, that little girl is expected to be okay, but many question why her older sister was handed the car keys in the first place. this is where it happened. >> i on the line. >> yes. >> reporter: a 911 call from south policy street. >> the call states her 7-year-old daughter, i believe, ran over her 2-year-old daughter with a vehicle. >>reporter: with this green ford focus, according to salem new hampshire authorities, the child was allowed to go outside and start the car on her own, something they believe she's done before with the 2-year-old unknowingly following behind. the 7-year-old somehow put the car in reverse.

responsible. >> reporter: it was early evening tuesday, these young girls saw the whole thing. >> i saw the baby try to open the door and it wasn't opening so she's going behind the car and the car was going back and it hit her, and she got hurt really bad. >> reporter: leaving the toddler with a broken bone and ribs and numerous cuts and bruises. she was med flighted to boston while some neighbors are shaking their heads. >> which makes this even probably a little bit more frightenin >> reporter: the child is can expected to survive but it's the possible charges for mom that could be next. and salem, new hampshire authorities are considering child endangerment charges against that mother. we're live in boston, nicole jacobs. >> thank you very much. this morning, burlington high's varsity football coach is on paid leave. the school says it's investigating claims of verbal

more specifics. students say there are two sides to every story. >> football is like a really serious sport, so coaches they have to get into it to amp up the players t could be a players being a little oversensitive about it or the coach probablily could have overstepped its bound. >> the coach's attorney says they're not familiar with the details but they are confident the school system will clear him. several students in newton are facing punishment over this video right here. it shows them on school propert confederate flag. the incident happened at newton north high school on monday. a student then posted it on social media. police and the school identified the students involved and in a letter to parents, the principal said they were taking appropriate action but they didn't give specifics. the red sox celebrating this morning. they clinched the division despite a bad loss in new york. the yankees hit a walk-off grand slam. but you know what? none of it mattered.

and partying in the locker room after. dan roche is in the bronx with reaction. >> reporter: it certainly was a strange night in the bronx. the red sox giving up at walk-off grand slam. but toronto of course losing gave the red sox the american league east. so the red sox went into that clubhouse and began celebrating. and celebrating. and enjoying themselves for what they had accomplished from day one of spring training turning around from a last-place finish in 2015 to in 2016. they are indeed american league east champs and now they're in the mix for home field advantage. so they will go on to the playoffs on a bit of a roll played very well down here in september. they celebrated, got a good celebration in. wasn't over the top, though and now they prepare for the next step. that will be the alds if they get past that alcs and then on to the world series if they can do that. overall, red sox to be american league east champs. >> it's been a great journey. we're not done yet.

hampshire. so there's some hope. temperature 56 degrees in boston right now. the dew points in the upper 40s. look at that northeast wind. 23 miles per hour right now. but what's interesting about the dew point as it's been dropping. so some drier air has been trying to work in off the ocean with that persistent on shore wind that dry air will help to erode the cloud cover. 51 in manchester, same in wooster. 52 in keene. most of us in the 50s out the there are some cool being reading to the north. look at that. satellite and radar shows those clear skies back through central vermont, new hampshire. see that, that drier air starting to kind of row that cloud deck. the clouds should fill back in. there there may be a few patches of drizzle back down to the cape and through the evening hours, still some inland breaks of sun.

in from boston. temperatures, 55 to 60 where we get some breaks though, mid-60s for highs. still cooler than average day. clouds tonight, 52, that northeast wind continues. we have the high risk of rip currents from the coastline of essex county back down to the cape today. tomorrow will be very similar. right around or just shy of 60 degrees. that onshore flow very repetitive forecast here. tomorrow starts try, the next wave of low pressure comes by and brings a chance of showers by tomorrow late in the d through the interior back along the south coast. generally light. so have the umbrella kind of on stand by or with you tomorrow. it looks like this wave comes by on saturday morning. so notice by 7:30 saturday morning, pockets of rain in eastern massachusetts, there will be some drizzle, fog, definitely a kind of damp start overall. sunday one more little push of showers comes through and that includes the -- i don't think

mainly cloudy. ski for 1:00 p.m. kick off. update from the national hurricane center did just come in from tropical storm matthew. still has 65 miles per hour winds moving to the west at 16 miles per hour. so here is puerto rico. here is the dominican republic. watch the track of matthew. we're talking about grad wall strengthening, and then a gradual northward turn as we head into the start of next week. so that's by monday and tuesday after that to be on guard for the middle of next week. we'll watch that closely. gradual improvement for us. mid-60s on monday with a lingering shower and more breaks of sunshine. still cool for the middle part of the week. >> construction on 128 as wrapped up. you no longer need to watch for crews working in those spots. you need to watch for crews working on 485. they are between route 150 and route 110.

slashover at high tide as well. 56 in boston right now. lower 50s manchester to wooster. 59 in chatham. that wind is gusty out there. over miles per hour right now. logan airport 20 to 30 miles per hour. that onshore wind will be persistent but notice what it's doing, starting to erode some of the clouds with that drier air working in. so i do anticipate some sunshine, particularly in northern massachusetts. the farther south you get, the temperatures in the upper 50s. spotty drizzle at the coast. but sunny breaks the farther north you come. we will be in the 60s with filter sunshine for the road home. >> expressway traffic is starting right on time. it's building quickly this sat columbia road. you're going to sit in about ten minutes worth of stop and go traffic there. it's also slow and go on 128 in braintree just before the split.

stops. route 3 still looks decent approaching braintree. >> thank you. we begin with a developing story in weymouth. a badly injured woman rescued from -- rescued from a roadside ravine. we've learned the crews had to use ropes to reach the woman and bring her 30 feet back up to the roadway. no word on her condition or how she ended up there. it was a large crime scene set up last night. we have a crew in weymouth this morning. we will bring you any new information as soon as we get rest of the week at the south carolina elementary school where a teenage gunman shot three people. that teen is in police custody right now. police he shot and killed his father before going to the school shooting a teacher and two students. one student is in critical condition. it's unclear if the three were targeted. the sheriff says the teenage gunman did not attend the school but was home schooled. police say the man killed by police in san diego suburb

an electronic cigarette. according to the police chief, 38-year-old alfred alonzo pulled the device from his pocket, held it with both hands, and took what they described as a shooting stance towards the officers. one officers fired a stun gun while the other shot and killed him. a private funeral will be held today for miami marlins pitcher josi fernandez. last night the team held a public memorial service so fans could also have a chance to say good-bye. the young pitcher killed in a weekend boat crash two friends. police have not yet determined the cause of that crash. the governor planning his first overseas trade trip. he's pitching mass ms. as a potential business hub looking to expand in the u.s. officials say tax dollars will only be used to cover the cost

feathered pooping machines who produce up to three pounds of it every day turning our recreational areas into unsanitary mine fields. they can also turn aggressive if they feel threatened. the problem has been around for years and nothing we try, chemicals, dog patrols, you name, seems to work. so the council is looking for alternative solutions. and as a citizen, a patriot, and someone who prefers clean sneakers, i want to do my part to provide constructive input. no very weary of being hunted, they're messy, not student i had. while it might be unwise to invite licensed gun owners to start blasting away at the local playground, perhaps a few carefully supervised executions might act as a deterrent, failing that, one of the most common predators of canada geese are chi owe tease. another critter that's been causing problems locally. why not put one problem to work
