live from the channel 4 studios in boston, this is wbz news at noon. breaking news, right now, a powerful category 4 hurricane matthew making landfall in haiti, bringing violent wind and rain to the battered island. forecasters say matthew could have a devastating impact on haiti. >> i'm kate merrill. >> hurricane watches are being issued in florida and let's check in with terry -- barry burbank, tracking it. it looks like a powerful storm with the eye going over the western tip of haiti in the worst quadrant of the storm, over haiti as it moves slowly to the north, nine or 10 miles

northwest as we go through time and it has maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour, a cat for storm moving north and it will turn northwest with time. as a result, we have a hurricane watch up for portions of the florida coast, hurricane warnings to the south of that and in much of the bahamas. they are in trouble, for sure. where is it going? by 8:00 tomorrow morning, in winds at 130, there will be some weakening and then around 1:32 to 1:40, east of florida, the strongest wind is to the northeast side of the hurricane and it will be battered by a lot of rain and wind and to the east of jacksonville, 8:00 on friday morning with top winds of 125 and closer to the carolina coast and eastern

along the outer banks, they will get clobbered on saturday and from there, a tough call and it may make a close pass to new england with wind at 90 miles an hour and that is what we are looking at. more in a few minutes. more on this possible impact here and our forecast for the next few days. back to you, chris and kate. the impact is being seen in haiti. >> streets are flooded and reports are coming in. nicole jacobs has more on the devastating blow to the island. >>reporter: there have been some evacuations in haiti, but many residence are often afraid to leave their homes, fearful that everything they own could be stolen. the storm has claimed three lives, so far. hurricane matthew continues to roar over haiti, making landfall as a category 4, wringing wind upwards of 145 miles per hour and the

hemisphere nation and at least three people are confirmed dead. santo domingo, feeling the impact. flood waters make inroads nearly impossible and in jamaica, a mudslide washed away this one. in cuba, residents are evacuating, 300,000 of them as matthew makes its way up the east coast. >> you can expect impacts in florida wednesday through florida has already declared a state of emergency. >> leave before it's too late. we can rebuild a home and business, but not your life. >>reporter: north carolina, they have also done that.

expected to remain a powerful hurricane in haiti through tomorrow night and could reach florida by friday night and new england is holding out to see what impact matthew has. back to you. as nicole mentioned, we are on the alert waiting to see what happens. you can track hurricane matthew and the possible impact of the cbs boston weather app that is free on google and the app store. an explosion and part of a new je people reported smelling gas near these patterson new jersey homes and firefighters were called and heard a hissing noise. an explosion took out buildings, reducing them to rubble. 15 other homes were damaged by the blast and officials said no one appeared to be inside the buildings at the time. at this point, it appears to be a gas explosion and they are

university. reports of an armed clown. >> it was a hoax. it is the latest in a string of disturbing nationwide reports. we have the latest. >>reporter: things are back to normal at merrimack college. police did not find clowns or suspicious activity on campus. this bizarre hoax caused moments of chaos here and at several other colleges. >> phenomenon is scaring people across the country and the latest target appears to be college campuses, including merrimack college. hundreds were evacuated from a dorm on monday night. >> i was here when everyone ran out of the building and my friends said that people were screaming in the hallways to get out. >>reporter: staff never saw a threat posted to a twitter account called clown watch saying there was a clown holding a rifle in a dorm. that building was evacuated and

shelter in place. >> i went to my room and locked the door and hung out with the shades shut, to be safe. >> i was very nervous that this was real, that he was armed and had weapons. >>reporter: police did not find anything suspicious and gave the all clear around 10:00 p.m. merrick of those merrimack officials said they take every threat seriously. this is a frustrating distraction and the misuse of resources. >> very disrupting. our students are midterms. this is disrupting their studies and the campus police and other departments show up armed and there is a state of anxiety. >>reporter: reports caused mayhem at umass and penn state. cell phone video shows hundreds running through campus trying to hunt down the clowns. officials at merrimack have reached out to twitter asking them to shut down the terrorizing accounts.

news with hurricane matthew battling the island of haiti. the storm made landfall after 7:00 as a category 4 with wind up to 145 miles per hour and witnesses said the storm has uprooted trees and torn roofs off homes. storm surges are expected with possible mudslides. hurricane watches are under way in florida. matthew is heading north and we are watching how it >> it looks like they will get clobbered in parts of florida and the carolinas and it looks like a close path this weekend. pay close attention to the forecast over the next few days. the most powerful sector went right over haiti this morning and it is clobbering that area. in boston, it is quiet with a high of 63 and the average high for this date is 66. we are not far from that and

tomorrow night and thursday morning and those will break off and thursday will be sunny with low temperatures mostly in the 40s in the suburbs and 50 in boston, a bit of the breeze coming in and highs tomorrow, low to mid-60s and upper 60s with sunshine more widespread tomorrow and high pressure will be in control. we get rid of low-level moisture that will develop each night to burn off next few days with the high pressure in control. for the probability of rain, there won't be much until we get into sunday. we will get rain coming up the coast from matthew that will dump a lot of rain on the coast of the carolinas, and the mid- atlantic states along the coast and up into new england. it's too early, but there is potential coastal impact and this weekend, dangerous rip

only a .5 to nine feet. with matthew, we have other storms with a minor tropical storm and then wind of 145 miles an hour, and what is this, in terms of the amount of damage? it's extreme damage wind in this category, up to 156 miles per hour. near the bahamas, bad news with the strongest wind they get battered wind and rain with strong wind over the carolinas and the coastline may have this close to new england on sunday as strong wind comes our way and strong and heavy rains, as well. my seven day forecast, lots of clouds and then cloudy and partly to mostly sunny tomorrow with beautiful weather thursday and friday and clouding over on saturday.
