bahamas, and the east coast of florida in its sights. millions of people are in hurricane matthew's path. south carolina will evacuate up to a million people. eric fisher has more on the storm's path and how it could ultimately affect us. >> it will bring u.s. impact. and the biggest question mark is in a devastating storm in parts of the caribbean. and haiti is first category 4 since 1964. here's a look at the satellite image. it's about to make a second landfall on the east side of cuba. 40-mile-per-hour winds, moving north at 9 miles per hour which is going to take it to the bahamas tomorrow. and then it takes a sharp left turn and it will be moving to

weaken. it should remain a category 4 hurricane which means winds are extremely strong and could produce a lot of damage. by thursday afternoon getting close to miami. and look at the path. it's along the east coast of florida. and even if it doesn't make landfall, it's going to rake all the coastline with strong winds, heavy rainfall and strong surf. and it continues through south carolina and into north caro. is the question. so models are in great agreement all the way through florida and south carolina. and that's where the biggest u.s. impact is. once we get to sunday, things start to spread out. and the gfs wants to take it up the coastline. and if the euro ends up being correct, we end up with a dry weekend. we'll have more details on

just a few minutes. right now the storm is hitting close to home for people with family in haiti. >> that country has been hit so hard by natural disasters. >> reporter: everyone i spoke with from relief workers to families living in haiti, they all say the same haiti is not equipped to deal with anything else. >> with winds as powerful as 145 miles per hour, hurricane matthew continues to wreak havoc over haiti, bringing with it death and destruction. back in boston, she says his parents and cousins live in haiti. >> they seem to be okay.

haiti can't afford another national disaster. >> haiti could not be more vulnerable to a hurricane. and for a category 4 to hit is southern peninsula is very scary. >> reporter: the hospital in haiti serves 70,000 haitians. they have 275 workers serving there and the road leading to the hospital has been washed out. >> the need in i what people provide from the outside saves lives. and we'll need it more than ever. >> reporter: a pastor receives a facebook message. >> the community looks like total destruction, walls, roofs, have been destroyed. >> reporter: and all he can do is pray for the haitian people. >> it seems to be getting a lot

picked up a call from his son. >> our youngest called us and was having a panic attack. neighborhood had been inundated with police. >> crews descended upon the pond looking for a landscaper in his mid-20s or early 30s who according to coworkers had taken a canoe on the water. >> a 911 call from a colleague the water and fallen in. >> before rescue crews arrived, the first officers to the scene jumped in and swam straight to the overturned canoe. >> they were able to locate the individual in the water approximately 40 to 50 feet offshore. unfortunately, the individual did not survive.

there are no signs of foul play but that's under investigation at this hour. nick giovanni, wbz news. the district attorney from lawrence confirming there's been a deadly shooting at a home on box ford street. police were called after a report of a person shot. they found a man in his 30s who died at the hospital. all new at 5:00. wbz now has video of the rescue of nathan carmen. his mother is still missing. >> we obtained photos and video from the crew of the freighter that rescued 22-year-old nathan carmen. he jumped from the life raft to swim to the freighter. he spent a week in the raft and

him. we see the crew hoisting him up onto the ship, eventually wrapping him in a blanket and giving him food. the question remains what happened to his mother? the two left september 17th on a fishing trip from rhode island and a week later he was spotted by the freighter and his mother nowhere in sight. he told authorities he heard a taking on water. carmen was once a person of interest in the death of his grandfather. several items from his home in vermont and his mother's home in connecticut have been seized but he is not charged in this case. part of a new jersey neighborhood reduced to rubble when a gas leak erupted. twelve homes were damaged, two

smell. firefighters heard a hissing noise and evacuated the area immediately and the blast sent debris rains down on the street. no one was seriously hurt and authorities are investigating what happened there. new hampshire senator kelly ayotte says she misspoke. >> certainly there are many role models that we believe he can serve as president and absolutely i would do that. >> a few hours after the debate she issued a statement saying that the remark was a mistake. >> here's what kelly ayotte said today. >> i misspoke and certainly i hope that all of our children aspire to run for president,

as good examples and i wouldn't hold them out as examples of role models for my children. >> does this help ayacht? >> any time you have to claim you misspoke, it's an embarrassment. she's been dealing with the trump issue every day for weeks. i've yet to see hard evidence that trump new hampshire. and keep in mind, trump called ayacht weak and that she's given him zero support. voters will likely judge her on her own merits.

a recurring creepy clown hoax is getting serious attention nationwide. >> parents are urged to take action. the hoax caused an evacuation at merrimack college last night. >> reporter: administrators at merrimack college are asking twitter to disable the thread have been posted. they've moved beyond college campuses. some students have staged clown hunts to dozens of communities in massachusetts and across the country. police are now being inundated with calls. >> resources takes them out of other areas, and what if

christina hager, wbz news. tonight we continue to track hurricane matthew, the category 4 storm slamming into haiti, packing 145-mile-per- hour winds. heavy rain and this video shows a river swelling way above the banks. you can see the strong current. the damage is said to be devastating already and now the storm is headed to cuba. this could be a major storm for the u.s. >> especiall southeastern united states. florida, south carolina, perhaps north carolina. those are the areas most at risk in the united states for this system. >> the time frame to watch would be saturday into sunday but the track is to be determined. and sometimes there's a sense of why don't you know? four to five days out is right

with tropical systems. i do favor a solution that will take it offshore to the south and that would limit impact here. and i expect there'll be more clarity as we head into the day tomorrow and certainly thursday. this is the hurricane center's track. and it takes it across the bahamas to florida as we head to thursday afternoon and evening. and the problem here is that if you had a storm that came into the coast like, that's thing. with this track as it stays a category 3 or stronger hurricane, it coming up to the florida coast. it's going to come around the natural best to the united states coastline. up around south carolina and southern north carolina before it starts to stall out and perhaps move out to sea.

anything. i just wanted to put it out there -- i don't think that's going to be the case. the ridge of high pressure in the east looks to be dominant and the ridge would keep the storm from lifting up the east coast to the level of new england. that's player we'll keep an eye on over the next 48 hours. temperatures in the upper 50s to the nor'easter is just offshore. and that wind will stay gusty tonight. temperatures in the 40s for the suburbs and low 50s near the water. and a mix of sun and clouds, otherwise, a nice midweek forecast. temperatures in the low 60s. a quiet evening up in the 60s and temperatures a little warmer than what we saw today. perfect october conditions, and

control. thursday to friday that's going to allow for warming temperatures, a lot of sun and a great stretch to be outdoors. 76 on friday and then we'll turn the corner and look to the weekend which should include above average temperatures. when we look at the 7-day forecast right now. the only rain is a chance for showers on saturday. the difference here from the or one that goes to the coastline is the -- rain for the weekend. >> it's a holiday weekend and a lot of people have plans. coming up, the danger of distracted driving. >> new numbers are staggering. the interesting way police are cracking down.
