eye on the track of the storm. >> good news for us but not the folks in florida. >> the trend has been our friend in new england. doesn't look like we'll see direct impact. right now 120-mile-per-hour winds and that makes it a category 3 hurricane. but it's expected to grow stronger overnight and into the day tomorrow. returning to category 4 strength. and on the track, you see it regaining the jupiter, florida, by late tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. from there, it may make landfall on the space coast. and then as we look to friday and saturday. it's going to move along the coastline of georgia, south carolina, and north carolina before taking a dive stalling and moving back to the south as we head to next week. the probability of hurricane force winds, basically a slam dunk across the bahamas

and along the eastern shore of florida. and as we mentioned. the waves, the damage that we saw across the caribbean. by tomorrow evening, 30-footers just offshore. and that will continue to climb around the coastline as we head to saturday. this is expected to be the strongest hurricane florida has seen in 11 years. 4000-year toss the date. we'll have a look at the in as matthew moves north. there's a mad dash to get out of the storm's path. and that's causing trouble. beth germano is live at logan tonight. >> reporter: flights to get out of florida are filling up fast. and today we found air travelers lucky enough to change their travel plans at the last minute. not wanting to ride out the potentially dangerous hurricane. it's not often that travelers

deb young, she couldn't get out fast enough. >> all the flights were booked for today and tomorrow. >> you felt fortunate that you were able to get a seat. >> lucky, very lucky. >> reporter: with matthew setting its sights on the east coast, they were feeling a sense of urgency. >> i tried to get into costco and couldn't get near. >> reporter: she had to make the trip to see family. and not happy to leave her husband and son to ride it out. >> people are putting the hurricane shutters up. there's no school. my son is in high school and there's no school thursday and friday. >> there were lines for propane and gas and before they hit the air, many passengers were finding it hard to find either

around to find a place, an hour. >> it all made harriet martin eager to change her flight. >> you'd be in there all enclosed with the shutters, and can't see the light. i'm happy i'm not there. relieved of the left florida and worried for those in the storm's path. if the travelers didn't get out today, they'd likely n on the track of the storm any time by downloading the cbs boston weather app. a cyclist hit and killed and many people we spoke to say this happens way too often. tonight the city says it will with taking action. christina hager is live with more on what's being done to keep cyclists safe.

cambridge city council person -- the first crash was not fatal. this time a man was killed in the intersection when he collided with an 18-wheeler. police pulled out the bicycle that was wedged under the front of a tractor-trailer after a rush hour crash in cambridge's busy porter square. locals are sadly not surprised. >> basically if you come through porter square on bicycle, you're taking your life in your hands. >> flowers near the yellow tape, wondering if it could have been a friend. >> i'm sure this person was that to the people. and it's really just sad because this can be prevented. >> a subject that's repeatedly come up in cambridge when another cyclist was killed four months ago, the community discussed how the traffic

lawmakers considered requiring side guards on trucks, mirrors for blind spots, among other regulations. this raises the discussion again. >> how we're designing our streets. the regulations we're putting in place for trucks in terms of hours they travel our streets, the equipment they have in terms of mirrors, truck side guards, protections. >> people who live porter square hope it won't take a scene like this to make the changes that lawmakers have been talking about. >> the school superintendent sent a letter home to parents saying students witnessed the crash on the way to school this morning. counselors were on hand at the schools in case any of them were traumatized. the district attorney is expected to identify the cyclist once the family is

tonight. several students in westford have been diagnosed with mrsa and staph infections. the school officials say all the locker rooms and gym mats are being disinfected and the coaches are talking about signs and symptoms of the next. from two men accused in the armed robbery of undercover police officers in roslindale. police say the suspects told them it was all planned ahead of time. the undercover officer arranged to buy threatened to rob and kill the officer. gunshots were exchanged but fortunately no one was hurt. the men are being held on half a million dollars bail. the lawrence football field destroyed by a festival will cost $900,000 to replace. the field is beyond repair. shards of glass are buried in the artificial turf.

the city for -- borrow the money from the city council. tom brady spotted on the field for the first time since his suspension ended and the red sox on the diamond in cleveland ready to begin the quest for another world series title. steve burton has all the good news. >> it's a busy time in the boston sports world. this is the time we've been waiting for. tom brady is back on the field. and you jacked to be back with his teammates. the patriots have to put him on the active roster so he can play on sunday. he didn't caulk to the -- talk to the media but his teammates have plenty to say. big papi and the red sox took to the field in cleveland to prepare for the playoff opener against the indians.

florida is very rare. a lot of things going into this one. in new england, a direct hit or a fringe hit looks unlikely. we could see enhanced rainfall and building seas on the south coast and the cape and the islands. here's a look at the satellite picture. it weakened as it went across cuba. now it's in the bahamas, and the storms around it, thunderstorm activity is really flaring up. and it should be intensifying as it approaching the bahamas and florida. you see all the warnings from daytona beach to north of miami. these are tropical storm warnings that extend to the west. expecting no effects in the panhandle. looking at the wind gust potential. as we head to the day tomorrow, we go into the evening and the stronger winds begin to approach florida and in the

significant wind and damaging wind expects there. a landfall potential around the space coast and reach -- vero beach. >> and it will head to georgia, south carolina, and north carolina. i'm worried about the rainfall, especially the low country of south carolina and eastern north carolina. spots that have seen 10 inches weeks, and they could see more than 10 inches over rain from the storm. at home, it's amazing to think. it's quiet with all this going on. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. and we've had low clouds and a nastier day across cape cod and the islands. sunshine everywhere else. mainly clear skies, and temperatures fall back to the 30s for many. patchy frost when you wake up

nicely. clear blue skies and a gorgeous day. high temperatures getting into the low 70s inland and 60s at the coast. a beautiful day and it will looks like this as we head to friday. it's a perfect end to the week. and then we head to saturday. and even though matthew is south of us, the tropical moisture is going to link up with a front. and we could see showers late on saturday and into saturday that looks to be the timing. clouds increasing on saturday. and excellent, and breezy, and columbus day monday, perfect october weather. 60 and not much wind. next week looks nice into tuesday and wednesday. we look to be dodging a bullet with matthew and we're thinking about our friends in the south. seems strange to be saying that in fact the center of our sports universe is cleveland.
