>> they are right now lashing the florida coast. they're getting their first taste of this. we want to give you a live look at singer island, a massive hurricane we've been watching for days only picking up strength tonight. >> we say it is historic the very first time that the hurricane of this magnitude has hit that particular area off florida and those conditions are quickly deteriorating. good evening to you i'm david wade. >> i'm lisa hughes. we're glad to have you with us tonight. things are obviously getting much worse and much more millions of people on the move are getting away from the southeast coast. >> reporter: here in jacksonville they're slowly starting to deteriorate. it started raining not long ago and it has picked up. since then you can see behind me, the water is much higher than what it typically is, it is choppy in this area in the north florida area. if you go down south, you can look around the beach.
6:01 pm
right now as matthew is churning off the coast of florida. this is a very strong category 4 storm, which means that you have 140 miles per hour winds. i know that there is the hope for many here in florida that the storm would weaken after it hit over the bahamas. that is not the case. instead the storm has strengthened, prompting the largest evacuation in america since 2012 super storm sandy. we're talking roughly two million or so people in florida, georgia, and the highway on our way down here from south carolina today completely full of traffic backed up. the lanes only going in one direction. at this moment people who waited until the last minute, many of them to get out of town. what does that have to do with the fact as we say thank you to people joining in. there was plenty of optimism by people that are going to be happy about the fact that maybe it would turn. thinking that they were going to have a chance to see this storm out.
6:02 pm
problems there, but for all the concern right now they were hoping that the storm would turn away. the eye is still a question mark. for people in florida and up and down the east coast it's going to be a long time. >> on the top of the newscast you heard a small part of an interview where you heard the governor of florida saying that this will kill you. he is obviously trying to put a scare into people in some ways, eric, because he really wants them to evacuate on out of there. >> governor chris christie in sandy said to get off the beach, trying to escalate the situation and prove to people that it could be a so hopefully it works because certainly a storm like this has the potential to turn deadly. there are two hurricanes right now, nicole to the east, matthew here is right on the doorstep of florida. 140 miles per hour winds and it has been intensifying today. you can see a classic looking hurricane. and what we will watch tonight are little wobbles in the track. you can't predict them. basically the eye is going to wobble to the west and to the east. we saw a little movement to the east earlier and now it's scooting west turning here around freeport into the bahamas. that'll turn towards florida.
6:03 pm
unfortunately still on track. that eye wall just scraped through freeport. so we'll see what damage reports come out of there, but winds were gusting over 100 miles per hour. and hurricane warnings extend from just north of miami reaching up the florida coast and all the way through jacksonville. the coast of georgia as well as into charleston, south carolina with hurricane watches posted farther off towards the north. so a large section of the coastline all being impacted. here's a look at the timeline. so we're expecting that eye to get really close to the melbourne area and the space coast as we head into late tonight and early tomorrow mornin that is where you're going to see the absolute strongest winds. then from there it is really very close to worse case scenario because they parallel the coast and moves up through jacksonville, brunswick, savannah and up into charleston before eventually it starts to turn out to sea. once it reaches north carolina you have all the cities and the towns that are going to see a powerful hurricane. cat 4 is expected until it gets to north florida then weakens to a category 3, still dangerous. then as they get to south
6:04 pm
flooding and heavy rainfall. it starts to stall and moves off the south. then it might come back to florida or the bahamas as we start into the middle of next week. now you heard the governor, but also looking at some of the images of the storm from where it has been would make people more motivated. pamela gardner has more of those pictures tonight. >> reporter: matthew has left its path of destruction across the caribbean. the tragic remains of some communities, entire neighborhoods nearly wiped buildings left behind. so far haitian officials say 108 people died in this storm, but that number could rise. authorities are concerned about the northern tip of haiti slammed bit storm and now cut off from the rest of the country. the people of haiti are now scouring for food and clean water as they try to pick up the pieces of their island. in the bahamas those riding out the storm captured this video showing the incredible power as matthew's high winds win around
6:05 pm
tossing boats like toys. this is some more aftermath from the bahamas here. a car nearly crushed in a parking lot that was flood out. back to you lisa. >> all right, pamela thank you. so much devastation. we're going to stay on top of this storm and you can as well downloading the cbs boston weather app. you can also look for storm updates on our facebook page and you can follow our team on twitter. we'll have the very latest on our website, ocbsb -- on cbsboston.com. florida. scott pelley will be anchoring live from west palm beach tonight at 6:30. a big story breaking back here at home and breaking news at 6:00. an elderly man found dead, his wife seriously injured. it appears that there was a home invasion in this normally quiet town of orange. wbz's luisa muller is live with the very latest from the scene. >> reporter: well david the medical examiner arrived here at the scene a short time ago.

for north hanover police. what we have obtained from the police department will go against the law that they are sworn to uphold. now, they are trying to figure out what happened when these officers attended an out-of- state conference and whether one could face drunk driving charges. according to the accident report, two north hanover police officers rear ended an vehicle. the driver fled the scene along with his passenger detective brandon gallagher. they say crevier failed to notify police of the accident and damage to the vehicle, which was a part of a bridge construction project in state college, pennsylvania. it was a passing motorist who saw the more heavily damaged police-issued dodge charger the officers were in and called 911 fearing someone was seriously injured. but police say they found the officers at a hotel, a

cars evacuate. we talked about it being so long. florida has not had a cat 3 hurricane since wilma back in 2005. that was 4,000 days ago to the date. now tonight we watch matthew that is continuing to strengthen, it is still a category 4 hurricane. it is moving right towards freeport into the bahamas, then it will move towards melbourne in the central coast of florida. so here is a look at the radar as you can see l spiraling bands moving ashore. if we zoom in over freeport you can see that the eye wall will look into the city. that will continue to track towards ft. pierson for tomorrow. now here is a look at the forecast winds, provided that the center will get to the coastline as we should be looking at winds that will top
6:15 pm
the strongest winds are into the eye wall. everyone into these hurricane- forced winds, where that eye wall will move through is where you can see them topping 130 miles per hour late tonight and tomorrow. it is a track that unfortunately just stays along the coast. moving all the way up through south carolina and north carolina. the winds won't be quite as strong when it gets to south carolina. however look at rainfall totals here approaching 10 inches. they could even pass that. eastern south carolina, north carolina has seen so there is a big flash flood threat and also a coastal flooding threat. so a lot to go on here and certainly that it will be one of the highest impacts that the u.s. has seen in quite a while. here at home tonight, for us we're on the quieter side of things with the temperatures in the 60s, it's been a beautiful day. high pressure in control. although that this are two hurricanes just off to the south, we have nicole and matthew, well our weather will remain pretty quiet. tonight chilly at 46 degrees. we'll have clear skies with

let's talk about the line up, shall we? brock holt is batting second, why? >> reporter: well, i think that john farrell wants to go right, left, right, left, right, left. cleveland's bullpen has been lights out since requiring andrew miller the former sox lefty. that's why he wants to get the match ups as early in the 5th inning to prevent that from coming in with a right hander or left hander for several straight hitters. when it comes to this team, steve, you talk about starting he series title since 2004, schilling, pedro, beckett, lester, on and on it goes. rick porcello hopes to join that club starting tonight. >> reporter: the talk coming into 2016 was $217 million man david price. but the man money was 22-4 rick porcello who gets the ball tonight. >> definitely very excited for game one. having the three days off and a little bit of that low there that we're going to be chomping
