right now hurricane matthew lashinging florida's eastern coast. this is a live view of jacksonville beach, high winds spins up the coast heading north. >> we're getting a look at some of the damage. emergency responders say calls have been coming in by the thousands. hundreds of thousands of people are now without power, a devastating storm surge is pounding some areas. >> the massive storm remains a major category 3 hurricane right now. >> the storm riding the coast

hurricane and the worse is being felt right now between daytona beach florida -- state of emergency there right now. >> reporter: hurricane matthew is still pummelling the florida coast with powerful winds and rain but so far the state has been spared a direct hit and florida governor rick scott is calling it a blessing. hurricane matthew with its 120-mile an hour winds coast. the storm is bringing heavy rain and flooding tides to the northern half of the state. >> this is still a really dangerous hurricane that the potential for storm surge, flooding, loss of life and severe property damage continues to exist. >> reporter: more than half a million people are without power after wind gusts approached 100 miles an hour overnight. >> it's really important that we get power restored as quickly as

parallel to the coast meaning the powerful winds of the eye wall could impact hundreds of miles of shore line while the flooding rain spread well inland. >> the weather is just starting to go downhill. >> reporter: matthew is already a killer. in haiti hit hard earlier this week the death toll is approaching 500. here in florida damage estimates are underway in towns south of the storm but forecasters may not be the last the state will see of matthew. >> it will transition to a category 2 somewhere around georgia and then does this big loop pushing back down towards the bahamas. >> reporter: for now florida's governor is warning all residents who have not evacuated to stay inside. airlines

flights between yesterday and today. the fort lauderdale airport has shut down. >> hurricane matthew is certainly packing a punch. >> its path is tickinging right up the coast. >> the hardest hit areas now getting out the worst of it, but north up to jacksonville is going to b western fringe of this eye wall of the just had a report of 91-mile an hour gust at daytona beach. the eye, the western side of that eye wall is 16 miles off the coastline of the. there's the storm center literally paralleling the immediate coastline. even in orlando had a peak wind of 61 miles an hour but we're still

is occurring. latest update out literally minutes ago still a category 3 major hurricane moving north northwest at 12 miles per hour. so places like jacksonville up towards georgia going to be in the path in the next 12 hours. by tomorrow morning matthew will be just to the east northeast of charleston south carolina, going to hug the coastline and move off the coast. north carolina by tomorrow evening is a category 1 at that point still going to bring damaging wind concerns there and eventually we've been talking about it all week took that hook back down towards the bahamas obviously in a much weaker form as a left over area of low pressure tuesday into wednesday. so get another round of rain showers coming in but nothing like what they've had over the past couple of days. here at home our weather has been beautiful, 66 in boston and the who had day

police say the driver got out of the van without placing it in park. the driver tried to jump back in but the van knocked him over and kept going through a busy intersection. >> the driver was out in the street, and the van then just continued to go down into our stairs. >> reporter: when the passenger then tried to stop the out of control van he pulled on the wheel swerving the truck right through the bushes and yard into the stairs. >> he went right from the van into the ambulance. i did see that he was aware. i'm not sure beyond that. >> reporter: he rents this home and is moving out tomorrow. the crushed stairs make the move more difficult but there's a plus side too. >> i guess it's a shorter term pain. >> reporter: mostly he's just glad this crash wasn't worse. >> this is just a freak accident and i hope everyone is all right.

passenger were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. . >> and developing right now at noon a 36-year old woman is facing charges in the deadly stabbing of her husband in roxbury. police say this all started with a domestic dispute just after midnight. the man who's not yet been identified was taken to a local hospital but later died. and today boston police are searching for a gunman who shot and killed a man inbu elementary school kids onboard. police say that shooting started with a fight on dearborn street around 5:30 last night. authorities say 3 young students were on the bus as the bullets went flying. >> i think it's -- when you're doing it out here on a busy street with a lot of young children riding home. i hope for the sake of the young children they didn't see it. >> crisis counselors are being brought into help the students today, the victim, a 20-year old

his name has not yet been released. in the quiet town in orange a deadly crime, a home invasion leaves an elderly man dead and his wife fighting for her life. we're live in orange with the latest in the investigation . >> reporter: it had been a quiet scene here at the home for much of the morning. we'd only seen a few people over the last several hours stopping by to drop off some flowers, but just within the last few minutes i can tell you we have home. all was quiet friday morning at the home off east river street in orange where an elderly man was killed and his wife badly injured in what investigators believe was a home invasion. >> last night i had a hard time go to sleep. >> reporter: that violent crime hit too close to home for david burbank who for you to off an uneasy last night. >> make sure the doors were

so scared they hid under a neighbor's backyard deck to avoid him. the man's child was among those on the bus. this comes after a string of clown scares in massachusetts and across the country. . health concerns in 2 local communities first in medford, officials are investigating a case of tuberculosis at the high school there. it affects the lungs and not easily spread and in swampscott 3 students the bacteria is highly contagious and resistant to some antibiotics. westford academy is back open today after the school was scrubbed down. 4 students there contracted mrsa. the school was closed yesterday for a scheduled day off and officials used that time to do a thorough cleaning. tracking matthew right now

hurricane matthew is pummelling the coast high winds and dangerous storm surges have florida, georgia, south carolina and north carolina under a state of emergency. >> all right bringing in danielle niles. obviously this storm has been kind of strange from the beginning with all of its paths. >> it's literally the eye is right off the coastline. talk about luck iffed that come ashore that would have been the core of the category 3 wind tendinging to scrape a little bit of of the coastline. we have had impressive gusts. these are some of the gusts. daytona beach 91, satellite beach 88, and even orlando which is focused obviously well inland 61-mile per hour gusts because

5 miles from the storm center. places like jacksonville and the coast of georgia will be contending with the storm surge and hurricane force gusts. here at home our weather is much quieter, 66 in boston. we're in the low 70s, 70 in manchester low 70s in southern maine. beautiful picture perfect low hopefully you get out and enjoy it. this time of year these types of days are numbered. there is a front back to the west. this front is going to try and interact a little bit with some of the moisture that's coming up from hurricane matthew. the rest of today is fine and if you have any plans this evening you are good to go, partly cloudy 40 in the suburbs overnight, 55 downtown. a light wind tonight.

a little sunshine in the morning, most of the afternoon is dry but look what happens west east late in the day tomorrow scattered showers even pockets of light rain do come through tomorrow evening and night. so if of you have saturday evening plans i'd have the umbrella with you. sunday morning there are signs that some of the rain may linger a little bit longer from the south shore to cape cod as some of the moisture tries to work north wad. well i do anticipate some bright thing to the second half of sunday it will be a gloomy start. that includes for the half marathon sunday 8 a.m. should be around 60, could be lingering showers and gradually drying out through the day. some showers may linger on cape cod the longest and high temperatures right around 60. got to pick a day of

awesome, classic weather, great for leave peeking too. vermont, northern maine and some splash of peak color in southern new england. cape and the islands again a chance of a shower on sunday particularly in the morning and temperatures will be in the 60s and fall into the 50s on columbus day if you are headinging north looking good too. there maybe a shower later on saturday, saturday night then plenty of sunshine sunday and columbus day dry stretch for us through the middle part of week and in the 60s, tuesday through thursday. and here's a treat for you right here, an incredible look at the beauty of the fall leaves from above. check out this drone video which takes us leaf peeping in vermont. you can see the brilliant oranges and reds highlighting the area. i could sleep on that all day. this is certainly a big weekend for the leaf peepers.
