matthew creating a huge mess in florida. storm surge flooding neighborhoods and that storm is slowly moving up the east coast with an eye on georgia and carolinas. i'm paula evans. >> chief meteorologist eric fischer has a closer look at this. >> certainly could be worse. the eye has not made land fall but florida and georgia and south carolina. here's a look at the satellite picture. you can see the movement the entire way up and it's curving with the natural curve chur of the coastline. it may make a land fall in south carolina tomorrow as it moves its way towards the north. it's a category 2. when it comes to wind damage, moderate wind damage as far as hurricanes go but the surge can be strong. think of hurricane sandy, it

coastal carolina and moving off the coast sunday morning. we have a hurricane and tropical storm to the south and severe weather to the west. when it gets here it's just rain this weekend. taking a look at temperatures tonight, make the most of your friday night and it's a fantastic day. the meteor shower is tonight -- not a huge one but more shooting stars in the sky than usual. 40s in the suburb and 50s in downtown boston. brightest skies in the morning and clouds picking up towards the afternoon and a chance of rain showers by tomorrow night after sunset. as this wave of low pressure ripples up along the front, still a question mark as to how much rain we can squeeze out of this. a decent amount of rain is off the cape cod and boston. the steady stuff stays south and east.

first the wind and rain then came the rush of water. florida is getting slammed by hurricane matthew. tonight team coverage of the damage left behind and the millions still in the powerful storm's path. now at 6:00, there's just a little bit of good news for people who are still in the path of hurricane matthew. it has now been downgraded to a category 2 storm which means major hurricane. >> we have this video out of jacksonville, florida an area being hit hard now. you see the water rushing over the beach and into the streets of the city. >> the situation in florida is bad but not the worse case scenario. streets and homes under water and buildings ripped apart and one million people without power. that number is expected to grow. >> now matthew is heading

powerful storm. the governor warning they could see historic flooding. >> this comes as devastating news tonight out of hait. haiti. there's reports the death toll is now more than 800. . for that reason, this is the last time you will see a hurricane matthew. they will retire this name because of the death toll in haiti and the damage in the united states. 110 miles per hour winds and it's a category 2 storm and still very powerful. hurricane bob back in 1991 so tonight we're tracking a powerful hurricane. the yea is due east of jacksonville, florida and rain bands are lashing the coast and st storm surge is the big issue out there as it rolls its way in filling up neighborhoods towards north eastern florida.

saint augustine gusting over 70 miles per hour. strong gusts and the core of the strongest winds staying off shore so good news on that account. we will be watching over the next 36 hours more storm surge to the georgia coastline and south carolina coastline and a 4-9-foot surge and i'm most concerned of charleston. also nicole in the atlanta and it's helping to force it towards the coastline so that's the next 36 hours. that track is crucial. don champion is in daytona beach where they see the strongest winds today. good evening, we're still dealing with powerful winds on the back end of matthew, even as people here assess the damage across the region. there's flooding and plenty of scenes like this. downed trees and power lines but people here say it could
