saint augustine gusting over 70 miles per hour. strong gusts and the core of the strongest winds staying off shore so good news on that account. we will be watching over the next 36 hours more storm surge to the georgia coastline and south carolina coastline and a 4-9-foot surge and i'm most concerned of charleston. also nicole in the atlanta and it's helping to force it towards the coastline so that's the next 36 hours. that track is crucial. don champion is in daytona beach where they see the strongest winds today. good evening, we're still dealing with powerful winds on the back end of matthew, even as people here assess the damage across the region. there's flooding and plenty of scenes like this. downed trees and power lines but people here say it could

without services for several days. at last check more than 185,000 people in this area are without service. near daytona beach, i'm don champion, cbs news. pamela card ner is watching this hurricane and talking about how it all is coming down to the wobbles at the end. >> absolutely crucial here. the wobbles are interesting because this hurricane taking. the wind to the east good news off the coast away from miami, other crucial wobble here between daytona beach and jacksonville also going further to the east. we take a look at the radar picture. this is from the eye and the yenter to center to the coastline. jacksonville is getting the brunt of the storm with the intense rain and wind and

worst wind is located. this is the distrance from the coast to eye wall is approximately 8-10 miles or so and the coast to the center of the storm 44 miles away. we saw what happened in daytona beach earlier today with the storm surge coming in. the storm ripped apart buildings and is certainly going to be quite the damage. up towards flagler beach, they have a whole highway that was un apart. they'll have to repae that and in jacksonville. >> and in jacksonville, the storm surge is what we were talking about. the water is the biggest concern with hurricanes but again, that wobble just playing such a crucial role. >> probably went from a billion dollars disaster to $30 billion. >> good news, we'll send it back to you.

alligator farm put this photo of a stork inside the zoo's bathroom on their facebook page. the zoo moved its animals to a safe location. it feels like things are bad but it could have been worse. >> this storm moving as it did to the east is a good sign i've seen a lot of things toda as bad as it was expected. we have another day more of this storm working its way up into the coast and carolinas. this is a hurricane that is going to be retired and cause likely over a billion dollars in damage. so it's still nothing to sneeze at even though the eye didn't make landfall. this has stayed 5-10 miles off

fortunate. heavy rain lashing the coast and a powerful hurricane droifing the storm surge. mostly damage was due to storm surge. so a track moving forward and a slow weaken moving to the north and could still make land fall tomorrow close to charleston and hilton head. that is something to watch. from there it starts to dig down to the south and weaken over time. you may have seen stories t florida. it's a very large storm spinning and this front which you can see approaching from the west is going to help to channel moisture on the northern edge of matthew and bring us rainfall this weekend. it's been crystal clear and a gorgeous friday evening. great way to start the weekend. falling back into the 50s tonight. late wispy clouds are moving in. our brightest skies are during

getting lower and thicker and tomorrow evening a chance of rain showers breaking out after sunset so any daytime plans should be fine. the best chance for rain is overnight into the first half of sunday and the highest rain chances are across cape cod and south coast and south shore. from boston north and west little if any rain is going to fall. this is also where you have brighter skies. we could see up to an inch of rain in nantucket so a sharp edge between have notes. tomorrow's temps making their way into to low 70s. on sunday we look at the morning rainfall likely especially south and east of boston and gradual clearing and a cool, crisp beautiful columbus day and that's the best day of the stretch. a large event on sunday, some rainfall in the area if the
