headquarters. the injuries are serious. good morning, everybody. thanks for being with us. let's check in with barry burbank for a look at the forecast and the latest on matthew today. barry, good morning. >> good morning, kerry. let's see what's happening this morning. it's been mild all night long. look at these numbers as we start out. we're in the lower 60s right now. but don't get too used to this. we're not going to be roaring up into the 80s today like we would many mornings when it varieties in the 60s. the temperature is going toe we have a northwest wind coming in so there's a -- right threw eastern massachusetts right now so the temperature will be declining. we have rain, of course we've got the hurricane still down here. we've got rain sort of being pulled up and drawn northeastward. so we're not going to get the strong wards. we are going to have some of this rain. we've had some showers off to the north and west of boston. some showers will expand into
5:02 am
this weekend. the steadiest and somewhat heavier rain over southeastern parts of new england. temperatures cooling off to the mid-50s today. lower mid-50s by late today. as far as the hurricane goes. there it is. it's about 30 miles off to the southeast of cape hatteras. it's producing record flooding there in the eastern portions of north carolina. we'll talk about the rest of our forecast in just a few he's our leader of our offense. he's a great player. it's exciting to get tb back, man. >> all of patriots nation including rob gronkowski is fired up today because their leader is back in action. tom brady will suit up today for his first game of the season. brady comes back after sitting games one through four due to his deflategate suspension.
5:03 am
coverage this morning from cleveland. >> well good morning. today is the day, tom brady returns. tom brady surprised many people when he decided not to continue his fight against the nfl concerning his suspension. well, everybody went to the calendar and they circled october 9th. well october 9th is here and now the focus on the nfl will be the return of the game's greatest quarterback. a full week of practice for brady this year. that's a first as he was banned team. we know that come today all will be well. patriots nation when braidy gets under center for the first time since the final preseason game in new york. while many seem to be very excited, his coach isn't letting on that this is anything more than just another game. >> well, hopefully all our focused on the job that they have to do and not worry about what everybody else is doing. hopefully we play well as a team
5:04 am
the goal being the fans. we'll do our job see if we can compete. >> reporter: the man in the hoodie not making any big deal. you know he's fired up. his teammates are fired up to have tom brady back. they went three-1 without brady. they plan on going four-1 this afternoon. steve burton, wbz, sports. it's not just the team that's fired up for the return of tom, a good chunk of patriot nation has followed the pats cleveland for the big game. nick geovany spoke with some of them and continues our team coverage. >> go pats. >> reporter: 640 miles from home, cleveland, ohio, starting to feel like foxboro. >> the trip was great as usual. just our annual jaunt into enemy territory. >> foxboro north, foxboro west. if you say so. >>s that the buffalo. >> reporter: patriots nation has
5:05 am
welcome back their quarterback. >> we knew brady was back week five, it just happened to be in cleveland, so we said let's do it. >> reporter: appreciate off his four-game suspension, his return this weekend puts deflategate in the rear view. >> never should have been gone, first of all. i think he's going to to great. i think he will do just fine. they're going . no-no. >> reporter: despite his month-long hiatus, fans who made the trek fully expect to see a show when tb12 takes over. >> yeah, is this the brady -- don't forget about me i'm still going to kick all your butts tour. four-game head start, you had it. now it's over. >> what are you going to do when tom brady runs wild on you, brother? yeah. >> there's a man mildly excited to see the return of brady time. the time could not be more
5:06 am
0-4 or worse. he's five-0 in those situations. the patriots have won by an average of nearly four touchdowns in those cases. reporting from cleveland, wbz this morning. we get started later this morning at 11:30 with patriots game day quick off is at 1:00 right here on wbz. after the game, the fifth quarter post game show is over on my tv 38. the patriots aren't the only ones with the big game, the red sox have their backs wall hoping to keep playoff hopes alive. we turn now to dan roche. >> reporter: yes, the red sox with a game away from elimination. david ortiz is possibly playing in his final game. his manager knows the scenario is something they will be dealing with though even if the sox win this afternoon. >> that's going to exist regardless of when the final game is played. you know, we knew that the day that -- you know david announced this was going to be his final
5:07 am
distraction for us at any point in this season. certainly it isn't tomorrow. david's final game is going to come. when that is, hopefully it's beyond the completion of tomorrow. >> david wants the focus to be on the team and not him, but if the sox did not force at least a game four, it will be the end of one of the all-time red sox greats playing days over at fenway park today. i'm dan roche, wbz s turning to campaign 2016 now, more problems for both presidential candidates. republican donald trump is losing support from big names in his own party and democratic hillary clinton is dealing with a new e-mail matter. following his controversial comments trump is vowing to stay in the race. trump's wife and running mate are those releasing statements saying they cannot defend his comments. for more reaction from
5:08 am
>> reporter: one man's vulgar comments can also provide political opportunity in new hampshire democratic senate candidate mage haggen pounced attacking kelly ayotte for her previous support of trump. >> now when it looks like this really could cost her, now she is going to disavow him. >> reporter: that's just what senator ayotte is doing. she says i'm a mom and american first and i cannot and will president who brags about degrading and assaulting women. i will not be voting for donald trump or hillary clinton. and instead will be writing in governor pence for president on election day. the question is, will the release of trump's remarks cost other republicans votes. >> this is bad, particularly when you consider the degree to which undecided voters are women and men who love women and have
5:09 am
likely to be offended by this as well. >> a selfish little sleaze ball. >> reporter: senator elizabeth warren hasn't been bashful about attacking trump. in a fund-raising ler she calls the remarks obscene and gross. as for governor baker he says he won't be voting for trump or clinton. a top aide has said baker has said trump is unfit to be president. these comments are more evidence of that. mitt romney is also speaking out tonight. the former presidential candidate says he is dismayed and offended by the remarks calling them vile. jim smith, wbz this morning. meanwhile hillary clinton's campaign is looking at e-mails released by wikileaks to see if they are authentic. the campaign blames the intrusion on russian state actors looking to help trump. parts of the e-mail say clinton total bankers that wall street

5:15 am
because you're the meteorologist. if you didn't show up, i would be -- who knows what i would be saying. >> flying. >> almost. >> there's wheels on that chair and you go pretty fast on that thing. >> i was checking out the latest stuff. >> you're a busy guy. what's going on. how are you? >> i'm good. how are you? >> good. >> same here als always. >> it's a decent weekend not too bad considering what's going on the rest of the country. we really can't blame. >> count our blessings for sure. even though it's going to be raining today and we need the rain obviously. but it is going to so let's see what's going on with matthew this morning. kerry, it's sort gone -- it's undergoing a transition. so it's not really considered a hurricane now, it's called post tropical cyclone. it's a post tropical cyclone. that's how the national hurricane center names these things now because as it's changing, it's internal structure so it's still producing strong winds and the max winds are still around 75
5:16 am
southeast of cape hatteras, by about 30 miles. and -- but we still have the plume of rain extending all the way up across the mid atlantic and even into parts of new england. it lobs like we'll get rain out of that. i think we'll get rain during today. the further north and west you are, the less rain there will be but there will still be times it will be rang today. so this storm is moving off to the east-northeast now a path about like this straight east. so it's not going to intensify anymore. it's not going to come directly up at us but an upper level system from the west is helping to draw up the rain from matthew. so therefore, we're looking for this rain to be happening. how much rain? well it's going to be a lot of heavy rain just offshore but some of it is going to be nicking southeastern
5:17 am
and a half up there. lower amounts off to the north and west. so that -- ribbon of rain is going to be really close. it looks like it is going to be turning into more of a soaking rain over southeastern massachusetts as we go through the day. so there's what's left of matthew, called a post tropical cyclone. there is nicole down here which is a tropical storm, not too concerned about that either. what we'll be having happen is this high pressure center is going to be moving in with plenty of cool weather over the next few days. so let's follow this throughout the day and be happeningment the farther north and west of boston we're going to have times when the rain is going to be coming down. it's going to be a showery type thing out here. the sun will try to come through the clouds if you're going to be going up and do some leaf peeping. meaning time over southeastern massachusetts, that's where the steady evident rain and heavy rain at times -- steadiest rain
5:18 am
the ball game this afternoon, take some rain gear, it looks look it's going to be raining occasionally through that time period as that game begins this afternoon. so the rain will shift offshore as a way disturbance develops out there, once it moves away and high pressure builds in, it's going to be a pressure good pressure gradient between the two systems. so the wind is going to pick up later this afternoon. it's going to clear up in the early morning hours and have operate sunshine all day long tomorrow but the northern wind is going to be g miles an hour and the temperatures going up in the upper 50s. so here's what's going on in terms of the highs today. we're having the high temperatures right now. there is a lower 60s. they're actually going to be dropping during the day. dropping to about 57 by noon. 54 by late this afternoon. lower temperatures tonight will be mostly all in the 40s. there could be a few 30s out in central massachusetts. but there's going to be wind blowing tonight to keep the air mixed up. so there isn't going to be any

at the very most. foliage tracker, yeah, we have that peak fall colors going on in northern new england and splashes of beautiful chlorine southern new england and southern massachusetts west. my forecast for the next search days, you have that rain today, again, periodic sort of showers off the north and west of boston. steadiest and heaviest this afternoonment sunshine tomorrow. it's going to have a cool october week coming up. and it warms up a little bit by thay brief shower. >> not too bad. rescue crews rushing to the water of san francisco. coming up, the latest on the 30 people who ended up in the water when their boat cap sized. >> we're glad you're waking up with us. maybe it's not so bright but we're still you're glad with us. we're here until 9:00. go grab that coffee.

i just want what's best for my kids. when i hear arguments that massachusetts needs more charter schools, i think: what about the students in all of our schools? every new charter takes away more money from the existing public schools. that's 400 million dollars, just last year. we can't afford to drain even more money from our kids' schools because they're already losing so much.

heavy rain. plus, heavy rains and flooding also wash lar vay away from breeding sites, such as tires, bird baths and flower pots. barry bringing us -- i should say good thing. because we are getting rain today. >> we need it. it would be nice for it wouldn't happen on a holiday weekend. >> i know. >> but i guess we'll take it. >> we have no choice. >> things are bad because it's extremely dry. >> right. >> the drought goes on and on and on. some drops of rain will falling today so have the umbrellas handy. some the moisture from post tropical cyclone matthew, kerry, that's coming our way. the storm is pretty much offshore. it's about 30 miles southeast of the cape hatteras. that's the center of what is left of matthew. but still producing winds of 75 miles an hour. but the whole structure is sort of changed. it's not really considered a full tropical system now. so call it a post tropical cyclone matthew and as a frontal system comes into it it's going
5:48 am
what they call an extra tropical system. so we'll have a quiz on that later on. but anyway, here's what's going on with the moisture which is spinning up to the northeast. some of the moisture again being pulled in the northeast. we'll not get the strong winds out of that as indicated yesterday. and that storm is going to continue on an east-northeast track going right out over the ocean. so that's about the end of that. i think. so we don't have to worry about any strong winds. but the wind will be freshening all this afternoon up to 15 to 25 miles an hour. in terms of what i expect for rainfall out of thi like the band or the ribbon of heaviest rain as you can see right in here in the yellows and -- in the middle here indicating some real heavy rain is going to be out to be the south of us. new england being right in here. so we are right on the edge of getting some heavier rain. it looks like southeastern massachusetts will get some heavy rain. so a little closer inspection of this indicates that boston probably getting a few tenth -- a couple tenths of an inch of
5:49 am
southeastern massachusetts. get about 6:00, again, not all that more off to the north and west. but starting to mound up as you you get into southeastern massachusetts. when it's all said and done it looks like two inches or more could fall on cape cod. it -- this model is suggesting only .20 in boston. i think it's going to be more. i think it's going to be.50 to one inch possibly near the providence corridor. and then drops off farther north and west. it's going to be more showeryn right in eastern massachusetts. it's been a very warm night. we don't have too many warm nights like this in october. lower 60s much of the night. the temperature did rise during the night. now it's starting to fall as this cold front comes through. that other storm out there is a tropical storm nicole as we've been watching over the last several days. but i don't think we have to be too concerned about that. about 10:30 this morning, the temperature will have fallen a few degrees down in the upper 50ss. the rain will be kind of showery
5:50 am
