6:17 am
storm, rain and strong winds briefly, they never really got into the strongest sector of the storm right out in here which is out over the ocean. so that stayed out at sea, fortunately we can be thankful for that. but then yesterday, it came out near charleston as a cat 2 storm. look how it made landfall near mcclelland south carolina, right in there. right on shore, and then now it's just offshore last night and now it's tropical cyclone. that's how it is designated bit national hurricane center. it's about 30 miles to the east-southeast of cape hatteras, north carolina. so on the main rain area moved off to the northment there are strong winds around matthew and some gusts as high as 75 miles per hour. but that pretty much will be the end of it as it's going to be moving on a track which will take it more on a east-northeast course. the rain shield from that is
6:18 am
yesterday. some of that moisture will be pulled northeastward. some of the rain comes up along with the wind which has been really churning up the seas, because the darker reds in here indicating right around 20 to 24-foot seas out in here, east of the carolinas and some of the stronger -- higher waves will be moving across the ocean and arriving up here in new england as well. but we'll only see about five to nine-foot waves around here. the waves also being built also by the fact having some increasing wind as well. so we've got the swells come up from the storm. we've got our own winds being generated here as the wind starts increasing quite a bit in the next 24 hours. we're not going to have hurricane-force winds or anything like that. but a gale warning sup along the coast a wind is going to pick up as high as 30 to 40 miles per hour perhaps. as far as looking at the rainfall, it locks like we're -- got the ribbon of rain with the highest rain just offshore.

southeastern massachusetts. so a closer inspection shows that probably there's going to be as much as two inches down here before we're through with this. the heaviest rain coming in this afternoon and evening down here. i wouldn't be surprised if boston ends up with more than .20. i think this model is underplaying. i think it's closer to half inch maybe an inch from the boston providence core den. then it drops off. the it's going to be more showery to the north and west of boston where the rain is going to be steadier and heavier. so there's the storm now. here high pressu fine weather coming up over the next few days. here you can see the rain coming through. the heaviest down here in southeastern ebbs. it starts to clear up tonight. so we will have high temperatures today, they have already occurred in the last couple of hours, they were in the lower 60s. that's why the 62 is down on the bottom, that's the temperature you would expect to go out when you head out first thing in the

that's because adult mosquitos, including those that carry the zika virus, get washed away by heavy rain. plus heavy rains and flooding also wash lar vay away from mosquito-breeding sites such as tires, birdbaths and flower pots. so that's a little piece of good news there. so barry is here now speaking of good news. >> haven't seen too many mosquitos around this year. >> not really. >> but for the most part -- >> not too bad. >> the dry weather i guess did them in. >> could today? rainy day. >> rain is coming down in scattered locations right now, kerry. not too much happening. but that rain is coming up obviously being drawn northward from the post tropical cyclone matthew. it's not considered hurricane anymore although it has maximum sustained winds of 75. the overall structure of the storm has changed. so it is designated differently by the national hurricane center

like this, but certainly a couple of inches not out of the question. the model even jumped the number to 4.5 inches at nantucket. i don't know if that's too robust but you get the idea. there it is right in here, it's moving to the northeast. it's going to come right up here over southeastern massachusetts. especially this afternoon. while this rain blossoms northward so we'll have off and on lighter rain to the north and west of boston, steadest and heaviest rain southeastern be wet for the sox game this afternoon. we're calling for a chance of showers but now it looks like occasional rain is in the mix here. it's only about 56, wind at 20 to 20 miles an hour. we'll see how that works out. high pressure is going to take control for several days after we get rid from the rain. that other storm out in the atlantic is tropical storm nicole. high temperatures across the nation today on this columbus

we've already had our high temperature for the day, it was in the lower 60s. still is still there at the present time in southeast. but the cooler air is starting to drab -- starting to be drawn in. also really cool air up to the north and west here. it's going to be turning kind of chilly. watch the time stamp as we go through the next few hours. see the spotty showers off to the northwest but the heavier rain which comes over southeastern massachusetts, note this afternoon, we're all down in the 50s for the most part, and the heavier rain over see there will be tapering off and clearing overnight. so my forecast calling for bright sunny days tomorrow, tuesday a few clouds tuesday afternoon. a little bit warmer on wednesday. about 65. so we're overall pretty nice week coming up. the next chance of rain will be along thursday and we'll have just a couple of scattered showers in. but today is the wet one. it's wettest southeastern massachusetts. go to the trivia for this hour. kerry, see what it is. there you go.

a very good sunday morning, everybody. we are up to 7:51 am, looking at what is going on with matthew because it is a post- tropical cyclone now. that is the new designation by the national hurricane center since it does not have the tropical characteristics. it is producing winds of 75. near and around the storm
7:52 am
it is pretty much not a threat but the rain from that is being drawn up into new england as we mentioned yesterday. the heaviest rain will be over southeastern massachusetts. as the storm continues over the next couple of days, two or three days, no more no more worries of it intensifying. it is becoming -- it will become what is called extratropical as the weather trend from the west has absorbed and moves into the circulation. it continues to generate big seas to the south of new england. whopper waves are offshore and the waves will stop building as some of the swells come up from the system and in addition, as the wind increases, not directly related to the hurricane, but because we will have pressure difference increasing across new england during the next 24 hours with a little low pressure center developing out here out at the ocean and a high pressure center to the west, the combination will cause aravind to increase. and in the south it will cause waves building as well.
7:53 am
the way forecast. let's look at the rain as it runs out from the storm center and it comes up close to new england. the heaviest is offshore but we -- we get sideswiped by heavy rain over southeastern massachusetts over the next 12 hours to 18 hours so by 1:30 pm, a couple of spots may have up to 1 inch and that is what it looks like -- some of the heavier rain coming down right now and it will be there much of the afternoon and into the evening hours. it is possible that boston could get .5 inches up to -- to 1 inch towards providence and many spots.

welcome back. we were talking with a james pedal of the boston globe about the presidential race and the senate race in new hampshire. let's focus in on this senate race. a new poll had kelly ayotte up six points, and that is roughly consistent with what other polls have showed up but it only covered one day after last week's debate, where kelly

indicated that, yes, she thought that donald trump was a role model for kids, a statement that she walked back the next day and is now the focus of a new maggie hassan attack advertisement. how big a deal is that? >> it goes to the narrative of the entire race. there is a lot of superlatives that you want to step back for why people in boston should care. number one, the most nationally watched race in the entire country because there are five races that can decide -- the control of the u.s. senate a lot of them are tight but the new hampshire race may be the one -- the one in pennsylvania -- it is flipping the concept. number 2, the most high profile race featuring two women and a terms of that -- the importance of the senate seat -- because of their backgrounds -- the u.s. senate against to city governor.

a lot of the viewers -- they have seen these different advertisements and what is fascinating. these women have had tremendous resumes and they have spent their lives preparing for the race and issues have mattered in terms of -- there are issues that do matter. they are defined by the presidential race. the big moment is the race -- maggie hassan has -- how much does she tries to look into? the debate moment on monday night when kelly ayotte who has been threading the needle so hard, trying to thread it so hard about donald trump but not lose supporters on the right she really messed up on monday night. >> she has been running significantly ahead of donald trump in new hampshire. >> something that we have seen in the number of the battlegrounds. the opening question in may or june -- about if donald trump really is the nominee, is he going to bring down other republicans around the country? does it mean that the house is going away? the voters -- what is fascinating is that you are seeing a disconnect. they do not see donald trump as a republican but just as donald trump so senate republicans like kelly ayotte, marco rubio in florida, or in pennsylvania, nevada running before donald trump who is not bring them down.

politics is that the voters get to know you. and kelly ayotte has been in the public eye for over a decade in new hampshire. is there a risk that anti- donald trump voters will decide that she is too close to him. i'm going to have to dump her on the day. >> you really catch on to the dynamic because the dynamic is the kelly ayotte is running towards new his shirt -- history. democratic and presidential years -- republican interim years. she got the debit -- it is her personality, her likability that is the reason that she is winning the race. >> all right. hiding in there. 29 days. can you make at? >> my money is -- >> we will be watching you on your daily ground game newsletter as well. a great reading, must-read for political junkies. that is it for us. i will send it back over to my
