debate from anything but himself. >> reporter: but trump himself continued to be the focus today when house speaker paul ryan effectively conceded that hillary clinton will win the white house. he says he'll focus on saving house seats and make sure clinton doesn't get a blank check. >> what's the effect of this move today by the speaker of the house? >> it signals continued exodus from the trump republican candidates and incumbents. it could be significant for both sides in positive and negative ways. politics are fun, right? he ridiculed trump. a big part of his rise to the nomination was his willingness to go after the gop establishment as part of his antiwashington critique. but trump long ago consolidated the backing of those antiestablishment

and the question is, how many of them will see the distancing of party leaders from trump as confirmation of their own reluctant backup. what about hillary clinton? she would be wise to hold off on the celebration or at least keep it private. the prime motivation for many republicans who don't like trump's style but are backing him an antipathy to hillary clinton. one more thing about those polls, you never want to peek too soon for fear your own course supporters will assume it's all locked up. you don't want people deenergized, if you will, or heaven forbid staying home from the polls. >> that seems to be a real risk, i think, right now for hillary clinton. she's up in the polls. but we all know based on the way this campaign has been that could change. >> it could change on a dime,

virginia over the weekend. they face a number of charges, including the home invasion and murder of thomas harty who lived in this home. those in this town are breathing a sigh of relief but are devastated over this gruesome crime. josh hart and brittney smith are behind bars tonight in virginia. they're charged with home invasion, larceny, and attempted murder, and murder. brittney is in -- brittany smith's family was in athol tonight and did not want to talk. >> get away. >> sad and awful. you know, tommy was a great guy. and he gave me -- he did a lot for me. >> reporter: they're glad the two have been caught.

>> reporter: they quickly built information on the two suspects, indicating they may be in virginia. on saturday, the two were spotted at a walmart in rockbridge county and taken into custody. people who live near brittany's home were horrified. >> it's horrible! i can't imagine brittany accused of that incident. >> i can't imagine, being a mother of three myself, i can't imagine -- i'm sure devastated. >> reporter: john, who's mourning his brother's death, knows his brother is in a better place. >> he was a wonderful guy. and he used to come every sunday and pray down here. he was with god all the way. and that's the main thing i remember. i know he's in heaven. >> reporter: both smith and hart will be in court in virginia tomorrow for justice arraignment. they could be back here in massachusetts as early as thursday to face charges here. in orange, i'm paul burton, wbz news.

high school will hold a vigil for five teenagers killed in a weekend crash. police say the driver of a pickup was speeding and going the wrong way on i-89 in williston when he hit their car and burst into flames. the vigil is at hardwood union high school where four of the teenagers were students. police have identified the driver as 36-year-old steven burgoinne. he'll be in court tomorrow. these through this apartment building. you can see the fire shooting from the apartments on bourn. windy conditions made it even more difficult to douse that fire. and the wind is also to blame for toppling this massive tree on top of a home in wareham. the people inside were okay. they're lucky to be alive, they say. jim smith has their story. >> i thought it was a earthquake. then i realized afterwards that it was the tree. >> reporter: it only took a few

a gigantic tree crashing down at this home. the 100-year-old maple toppled by high winds. >> all of a sudden we heard this huge bang. we didn't know what it was. explosion. what it was. so we both jumped up. and then we heard a second one. this all happened within seconds. >> there's the ho. inside, you can see heavy damage to a bedroom. one of the limbs coming right through the ceiling. but it doesn't end there. the family's cars were hit as well. one of them pulverized by the tree. if you get up close to this tree, first of all, it's amazing how huge it is. and you can also get a look at the rot inside. that might have been a factor in why it came down. a view from up above puts it all in perspective. easy to see the tree could've

tonight from fayetteville, north carolina. >> thank, y'all! we're saved! >> reporter: people in north carolina are moving to higher ground by the truckload, rescued by crews from ohio, new jersey, and new york in the wake of a breached levy flooding their town. this two days after the rain from hurricane matthew stopped. >> i've been in the town all my life 52 years. i've never seen it like this. >> reporter: crews have moved thousands of people to safety. >> god brought me through. and thank you all very much! >> reporter: extreme flooding in south carolina forced 150 people to seek shelter on the third floor of the town hall where they were rescued this afternoon. officials say seven dams have failed. four islands were evacuated, including hilton head, remain closed. >> trees down in a way we've never seen before. and flooded roads in a way that's been devastating to these areas that may not have dealt with it.
