crash on a busy street. what we are learning about the pilot who survived. >> breaking news on the south end, police on the scene of a reported sexual assault. >> a hospital patient steals an ambulance and takes it on a joy ride only stopping police say when he hit a cruiser. >> live from the channel 4 studios in boston, this is wbz news at 11:00. >> a deadly plane middle of a busy street. the wreckage burst into flames. the pilot was just learning to fly and somehow avoided a van and office building moments before crashing. >> and other drivers. the plane went down on a main street. wbz is live in east hartford for us now. you just got new information from police. >> that's right, the remnants

nearby flight crew still live behind this power crews behind me. in that news conference, policeconfirm one man is dead and another man crawled from the wreckage. >> crews now work to restore power to the area where a small plane crashed in a ball of fire. investigators revealing tuesday night the twin engine plane took off with two men from nearbybrainerd airport. only one survived. >> he is expected to investigators and speaking with detectives. >> i just saw the plane on its side. it wasn't flying straight at all. it was on its side. i saw it dip and i was like that hit the ground. >> just before 4:00, witnesses say the small piper pa-34 careened into the main street and burst into flames taking telephone poles and wires with it. cell phone video and photos capturing the horrific aftermath. >> i saw the flames of what i assume were the remains and

power box and it was smoking too, so there were transformers down, wires down. >> witnesses say the plane narrowly missed this white van traumatizing the people inside. thankfully, they were not hit, but they were brought to the hospital. >> always tragic when we have an incident such as this, but it could have been a lot worse. >> we know the "new york times" is reporting that federal investigators are looking into whether this crash was intentional. we also just heard a short me be shutdown for a few days while the fbi and the ntsb and local law enforcement try to figure out what happened here. we're live in east hartford, connecticut. >> we are following breaking news happening in the south end. you can see a heavy police presence as they investigate reports of a sexual assault. it happened near clarendon and columbus. we are on scene with the latest information from police.

short time ago they are investigating a report of a sexual assault. this is in the area of clarendon street in columbus in the south end. on scene, we have seen police going in and out of the residence on clarendon street take photos of the door, mailboxes here and a second entrance inside as well as going upstairs and taking photos up there as well. they have gone into this building with evidence bags. we've seen them going in and out and they have been here for several hours. at this point we don't have a lot of details, but, again, we o of a sexual assault against a woman inside this building and as soon as we get more information, we will bring it to you. for now, wbz news. >> stealing an ambulance, police say a hospital patient took it then crashed into an officer's cruiser and that patient was at came bridge hospital when he apparently jumped in the front seat and took off. we're live in came bridge --

last long fortunately. >> not very long. just a mile or so. it began just after 5:00 this afternoon just outside the e. r. here at came bridge hospital. -- cambridge hospital. police say the suspect had been living in a local homeless shelter. >> and the squad car pulls in front of the ambulance right beside me and i'm like, oh, this is interesting. >> he was walking near his apartment on third street this evening when he witnessed an odd encounter between an officer and ambulance driver. >> i in a threatening way, he just said "you stole an ambulance." police say 48-year-old everett goss had just been treated at the hospital, strolled outside, hopped into an ambulance and drove off. apparently, it was either running or had the keys in it. ambulance owner pro ems quickly called for help. >> all units, all units on a general broadcast larceny of an ambulance from the cambridge hospital parking lot.

witnessed that officer questioning the ambulance thief. >> he seemed out of it like he didn't understand what the officer was saying, he didn't understand the situation, maybe he didn't understand what he had done. >> the surrender didn't go as smoothly as the officer had hoped because when goss took his foot off the brake, the ambulance leaped forward and crashe into my vehicle. >> he didn't cause any damage or injuries. >> the hospital and the ambulance company did not respond to our inquiries about policies for leaving the keys in ambulances out here. every receipt goss will be -- everett goss will be charged. >> there are new clues caught on camera that local police will hope will lead them to a deadly hit-and-run driver in

surveillance photos showing a silver or gray honda civic leaving the scene of the accident back in late september. the victim died at the hospital. if you recognize that car, you are asked to call state police. >> tonight, it's a community living in fear. a level three sex offender once sentenced to 190 years in prison is free and living in their neighborhood. worse still, no one seems to know where he is right now. wbz is live with the weymouth. >> richard gardener is supposed to be staying here at his parents' home. there has been no sign of him all day or night. residents are furious warning everyone that a convicted child rapist is living in a neighborhood full of young children. >> for nearly a week, this is a neighborhood that feels as if it's been held captive. residents say they had to find out on facebook that a level 3

child rapist and kidnapper just now out of prison had moved back in with his parents in weymouth. >> i'm picking my neighbors' kids up at the bus stop because no one wants to let their kids walk home. we bought in this neighbor because it's a safe one and awesome community. it's just sad. >> everybody is upset about it. i would too. you have three little boys over there, couple kids, a couple little girls next to me. >> flyers followed. we contacted the da ofmassachusetts and contacted the weymouth police, basically anyone and every that would hear us. >> richard gardner was in his early 20s when he was convicted of raining and kidnapping several boys in the late 1980s and sentenced to 190 years, but years later, he appealed and his sentence drastically shortened. last week, quincy police say he

florida discussing climate change with former vice president al gore. she got the crowd going saying you can't vote for trump because he doesn't believe in climate change. >> four churches are suing the state over the transgender rights deal, but the legislation's fate may be up to voters. the law passed in july let's transgender people use bathrooms based on their identity. they say they have enough signatures to put a repeal of the law name, but say they have cited the 80-year-old man who drove the wrong way on the pike yesterday. he's facing a number ofviolations including neglect driving. state police say he drove actually about three miles heading westbound in the eastbound lanes. three drivers crashed trying to avoid him. he hit a barrier neu near new -- near newton.

of traffic. you'll see the officer chase the man on to the highway, then use a stun gun to take him down. he was wanted for robbing a cole store in texas. he wasn't run over. >> a local officer finds himself on the wrong side of the law after police say they were forced to take him down with a taser. >> it happened during a dispute at his home. wbz has the story tonight from lowell. >> sergeant vincent fernando of stood before a judge tuesday nursing a black eye to face charges stemming from a domestic incident on sunday. police were called to his home in response to a brief 911 call placed by one of his children. according to court documents, the call ended abruptly and then yelling could be heard in the background during a call back. when police arrived, they noticed swelling under the eyes of both fernandez and his wife. his attorney argued during his
