ready and waiting, armed with a shotgun when those officers arrived. both officers were shot multiple times remaining in critical condition tonight. i'm liam martin. >> i'm paula ebben. as we are learning more of the disturbing details about exactly what happened inside that east boston apartment building. nick giovanni is live with the latest. nick? >> reporter: paula, liam, i can tell you in talking to neighbors all afternoon, they've been saying they cannot get over how this went peaceful night to a war zone overnight. now we can see some 18 hours later that police, they are still here at the scene going over the aftermath. >> i have never seen anything with my own two eyes like that. i mean it is just crazy. >> reporter: heather witnessed what she described as a war zone in east boston overnight. >> well i heard the commotion outside and their sirens and my roommate screaming that it's going down outside. >> reporter: just a few doors down, crime scene tape

on thursday. marking where two pd officers, richard cintolo and matt morris were shot and critically injured overnight. responding to a domestic dispute between two roommates. >> shots fired, officer down. >> reporter: the situation took a deadly turn when they encountered one of the tenants, the 33-year-old kirk figueroa who according to commissioner evans was armed with a tactical rifle and shielded by a ballistic vest. a hundred police officers with their guns drawn. it was very scary. >> some described this as a ferocious fire threat. >> he chose to use deadly force. when someone is going to use deadly force we're going to respond appropriately. >> reporter: hours lathe neighbors no longer felt threat -- later neighbors no longer felt threatened, but still shocked. >> more sad than shaken. we knew the officers. i pray for them. >> they are very easy going guys and they roble never expected something like this.

tape still surrounds the house, we can tell you that the commissioner confirmed this afternoon that police are looking at the possibility of this domestic dispute may have started with a fight over the thermostat between figueroa and a roommate. again that is still under investigation. that's something we'll certainly continue to stay on top of. for now we are live in east boston nick giovanni, wbz news. police commissioner william evan says that the domestic violence calls could be the most dangerous. >> david wade jous with this call about a fight between two roommates turned into an immediate fire fight. >> reporter: liam, more than 30 minutes of dramatic police scanner audio really captures the frantic scene there in east boston. and the courageous efforts to save two officers lives while also taking out the shooting suspect. in some of this audio you'll hear the gunfire in the background. >> we've got shots fired, which means every officer needs to make their way to 136 gladstone street, please.

we will bring you the late e as soon as it -- latest as soon as they become available. boston police arrested a man wanted for an attempted sexual assault. police released video of the suspect yesterday. today they arrested 32-year-old jose cepeda of roxbury for trying to sexually assault her before taking off. the u.s. striking back after missiles were fired at american warships twice this . missiles at radar sites controlled by the rebels in yemen. the rebels have been locked in a civil war with the government. this is the first time that the u.s. has been drawn into it. and also developing, the man accused of setting off bombs in new york and new jersey have pleaded not guilty. a -- rahimi was present in his

bomb in new york city. rahimi was at the center of the massive man hunt before being shot by police and arrested. governor chris christie could face criminal charges in the bridgegate scandal. a citizen complaint alleges the new jersey governor knew about lane closures and the georgia washington bridge -- george washington bridge and did not order his staff to reopen the lane. as punishment to the fort lee new jersey mayor for christie says that he is launching an appeal. the ntsb says that damage from last month's train crash into a new jersey station is hampering their investigation. today the agency released their -- their preliminary report. the impact to the crash was so intense that the train controls were destroyed. the report also reveals that the train was going with more than dozen the speed limit as it entered that station. the green line has the most

that's according to a new report obtained bit boston globe. -- by the boston globe. the globe reports that the state audit shows that the t have not properly maintained tracks or the wheels on the green line tracks. a string of car fires have investigators in kingsboro asking for the public's help there. someone set six car saturday morning. flames destroyed a home and 11 vehicles there. a $5,000 reward is now being offered for information leading to an arrest. well tonight two dogs are happy to be free after they were trapped in a boxford drainage pipe. listen to this. crews used a camera to go down into the pipe and locate the dogs. the backhoe was brought in to dig up the pipes so the

massachusetts with the biggest rain totals. they are certainly seeing some improvements there with the category moving to severe instead of, excuse me, moderate instead of severe and towards the islands that we'll get to be dry. in fact new hampshire has a 16- inch rainfall deficit just this year. nantucket has seen above average rain. when you look at their comparison, this is the worse quality gore -- the cape being in one of the worse categories to the moderate drought. at least helping out a little bit, but not a lot of rain going forward i would say. a couple of showers are moving through. that will be about it. if anything a couple hundreds of an inch of rainfall. they are bringing in colder air. today was nice and mild and many towns topped 70. still in the upper 60s for most of us. pittsfield at 53. we are going to crash back through the 40s tonight and the winds will pick up to move

that will usher in much more chilly air as we look late tonight and into the day tomorrow. all the while, hurricane nicole is passing by bermuda and they will stay out to sea. overnight tonight, coldest to the north and the west and mildest towards the cape. overnight lows in the upper 40s to the 50s. the wind will make it feel colder with a very brisk morning tomorrow. plan on having a decent jacket on. looking at temps in the 40s, plus that north-northwesterly breeze. all told that it will be those days when you have the bright blue skies and the puffy cumulus clouds and temperatures. very brisk autumn day. the 50s to the 60s. our sunset is at 6:03, which means that it will be the last friday night sunset after 6:00 until next spring. soak it up. taking a look at the high temps tomorrow, mainly upper 50s to the lower 60s. just a little cool for this time of the year. tomorrow night the winds will go quiet and with that we are going to have very cold temperatures out there. now the weather service doesn't issue anymore frost advisories, which is why you don't see them to the west.

saturday morning and i think that we will probably avoid a freeze near the coast and the cape. but if you have not seen that killing frost yet, friday night is looking pretty likely. after that we've got the full sun with a beautiful saturday, no issues for outdoor plants. and sunday as the winds will turn more southwesterly again, we'll warm up with a chance topping at 70 degrees on sunday afternoon. so it will be a great fall weekend with a lot of festivals and walks and charity events. looks like 60 degrees on saturday and less wind sunday. just topping 70 with some increasing cloud covers that will move in. in terms of fall color it is peaking across new england and in the berkshires so you don't need to go far. we will start moving past peak after this weekend with the highest elevations. if you are moving north towards the lake regions of the mountains, mid-50s on wednesday and then low 60s on sunday. a great paradise. here is your accuweather seven-day forecast, next week mild, a few 70s. rain showers on monday.

third of that is due to screening mammograms. the government task force currently recommends women get screened starting at 50, twice a year. who is happier, moms or dads? a new study suggests, of course, moms are getting the short end of the stick. researchers collected data from thousands of parents about their feelings whil day. they found mothers are less happy, more stressed, more fatigued than fathers during their time with their children. and while there are exceptions, married moms tend to handle those basic childcare duties like laundry, meal prep. while married dads will see their play time and recreation, which of course could be more relaxing and rewarding. now the good news is men and women, moms and dads both enjoy

for you tonight as we start in east boston with beth germano. beth? >> reporter: well police say that domestic violence calls are the most unpredictable. this is certainly no prediction. the two officers are in critical, but stable condition after answering up a call here on gladstone street apparently for a dispute over a thermostat. what happened next was completely unprovoked. it's described as a ferocious fire fight on gladstone street that left two officers fighting for their lives. 27-year veteran richard cintolo and 12-year veteran matthew morris. what was a domestic violence call to this home turned into a deadly -- turned into a deadly call. >> when the officers arrived they were met by a victim at the door who had claimed that his roommate had pulled a large knife on him. >> reporter: when the two officers entered, police say they were met with a hail of gunfire in a hallway. the suspect 33-year-old kirk
