>> after we had yesterday, good morning, 72 yesterday and it cooled off overnight. we had a cold breeze to go along with that. we are looking at temperatures in the upper 40s but feeling chillier than that because of the wind which is blowing. the sky is clear it out as you can see. this is showing lots of clouds in the mountains but they are really not -- it is mostly clear. the daily planner, looks like we are starting out on the cool side, breezy, sunshine, sun rising, 6:56 am, sunday -- pretty much all day long, uninterrupted sunshine. of the wind will be lighter by midday but a breeze and sunshine this afternoon, sunset at 3 am. look out tonight because we will have the hard freeze in many locations. freeze watch along the coast and freeze warning inlaid to places which have not had a freeze yet in the areas west of boston. it is going to definitely be called matt. more about the weekend forecast coming up, traffic and weather to gather. the roads are wide open,

the o'neill tunnel and a live look at the level connector you can see that you will have no issues getting into the city from the north. checking the ride from the south, 95, 24, all clear and so is the expressway. the latest on the shooting of two boston police officers. >> this morning both officers are in critical but stable condition. detectives have a search warrant for the east boston home where the shootout happened. we were there as investigators searched the scene and we are learning about the suspect, his criminal past and possible motives. honor of the officers individual is held in east boston. city leaders, fellow officers and the community gathering together in prayer. it was emotional. wbz katie brace was there. >> there are no words for these guys. >> reporter: captain kelley mccormick appraises his colleagues and close friends. >> they did everything they could for the neighborhood for their fellow officers and for themselves, kept themselves

treadway at the east boston and law enforcement communities came together in prayer. >> when something hits home, you feel like you do not know what is going to go on. >> reporter: that the officers responded to a domestic call shortly before 11:00 on wednesday night. two -- gladstone street,. the officers -- it was a hail of gunfire. >> it was rapid. it was not like one at a time, separated by seconds but it was popping. >> reporter: investigators say that the suspect kirk figueroa more a ballistic vest and fired a rifle. nine officers charged in to pull their men out. >> they did everything within their capabilities to bring them home safe >> reporter: this cell phone video shows the frantic rush to get them into the hospital. police say that figueroa was shot and killed in the exchange. detectives say that he was not licensed to carry a gun.

in east boston, katie brace, wbz this morning. a candlelight vigil will be held at the shooting scene at 6:00. everyone is asked to wear a blue shirt and bring a candle. quick action of fellow police to help save the lives of the wounded officers. commissioners says that they used tourniquets to slow the bleeding and doctors say that is what saved officer matt morris life after he was shot in a main artery in his leg the officers carry tourniquets after the marathon bombing and the retired transit officer says that is an important change. >> from what i hear, up to this point, it looks like some of the things, the changes, the training, and the tools that went into effect after the marathon, after my shooting, hopefully it helps to save the officers lives. >> last year the boston police department started adding the tourniquets to their vehicles and some of the officers who use them on wednesday night had just been trained last week. boston police are urging community to give blood. they say that officers needed transfusions and if there's one thing that you can do to help, it is to donate blood.

he was not licensed to have a gun in massachusetts. on his website he claimed to be a veteran of the u.s. army reserves but the army times reports that he only enlisted and never attended basic training i was dischargedue the wbz i-team learned that in a divorce case in georgia last year his ex-wife asked for a restraining order, setting a history of domestic violence. it was charged with impersonating a private detective without the proper credentials and he faced a felony charge in georgia, accused of setting his car on fire to collect insurance money. despite all of that, he was a constable in boston, approved by the city council in april. >> nothing that would ban us issuing him a constable license

process, but he did have a record, but from what i understand, nothing in massachusetts. >> a felony conviction or should have disqualified him from becoming a constable but we learned that he did not have to acknowledge that on the application because as a first- time offender was able to remove it from his record after completing probation. stay with wbz on-air and online for the latest developments on the boston officers that were shot. more information expected today about a possible motive in a deadly home invasion in orange. the two suspects go to court the 23-year-old joshua hart and 27-year-old brittney smith be arraigned on murder and other charges this morning. they were captured on saturday at a walmart in virginia. police say that they broke into an orange home last week, killing 95-year-old thomas hardy and injuring his 77-year- old wife. police capture the man wanted for a sexual assault. he is due in court. investigators released video and pictures of the suspect, hoping that someone would turn him into they arrested 32-year- old yesterday afternoon. he is accused of pushing a

the fall foliage continues and it is moving down to southern new england. my seven day active forecast calling for a -- look at the numbers. 58 today, 62 tomorrow, cold and frosty, freezing conditions but 72 on sunday, 72 monday and how about 82 next tuesday? 80 on wednesday. how does that sound to you? >> traffic is looking beautiful right now. you can check out the expressway, light traffic by columbia road but it is not going to slow you down. you will have no issues getting to the expressway, while 3 along the south shore and 24 are wide-open. the split, the tunnel, north shore easy as well getting into the city. to the west, the pike, route 2, 9 and 16 are all clear, a straight shot. >> we love the roads at 4:45 am. a rescuer putting friendships to the test. two dogs trapped underground in boxford. >> as wbz leo martin explains, one of the dogs would not leave his friend behind. >> this one. rosie. >> reporter: a good thing that rosy and winston our best friends because they spent several hours on thursday trapped in a drainpipe.

from the back of our property down to the hillside. >> reporter: suddenly they were start. winston was actually small enough to find his way out but he was not leaving his friend behind. >> he was the one that was really stuck and she would not -- he would not come out without her. >> reporter: the rush was on to dig them out, that -- that pipe 12 feet underground and the dogs were 60 feet in. >> from the fire rt that helped the dogs get out. >> reporter: of the crews could see the dogs with the probes and the dogs could see the probe well enough to let it guide them towards the exit and out came winston and rosie. within minutes, celebrating their newfound freedom, perhaps rosie thanking her friend for not leaving her behind.

welcome back. 4:53 am and the driver accused of killing five teenagers in a wrong way crash in vermont will be arraigned today on murder charges. 36-year-old stephen is facing five counts of second-degree murder. police say he drove the wrong way on interstate 89, hit the teenager car and stole a police cruiser before crashing into seven other vehicles as he tried to get away. he will be arraigned in his hospital bed. a judges deciding if the former house speaker will get out of prison early. federal officials filed the compassionate release recommendation yesterday calling for him to be released immediately.

eight year sentence -- he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. governor charlie baker will give a speech in new york on charter schools. this comes just two weeks before massachusetts voters answer a valid question on if to increase the number of charter schools in the state. baker is a strong supporter of charteho the green line has the most derailments of any light rail service in the country and a new report finds that the green line 7 derailments last year top the problems of similar systems nationwide. it reports a state audit shows that it has not properly maintain the tracks or the wheels on the green line cars with a history of problems. 16th annual oyster festival will not serve any raw shellfish after suspected norovirus outbreak on cape cod. 75 our perspective the cases were reported in today's. health officials say that the cases were connected to eating raw shellfish at restaurants
